Vinyl LP pressing. Reissue. Recorded in NYC in 1958 and originally released in 1959 as The Cecil Taylor Quintet - Hard Driving Jazz this is in fact the only existing document of the meeting between John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor. Even if caught at an early stage in their career the two masters show great personality and deep respect for each other while trumpeter Kenny Dorham sticks more to his familiar bop idiom. Cordially backed up by Chuck Israel on bass and Louis Hayes, Coltrane swings madly on Taylor's dissonant comping producing a rare, fascinating friction between two worlds. A must for every Coltrane maniac out there.

Alice Coltrane's devotion to spirituality was the central purpose of the final four decades of her life, an often-overlooked awakening that largely took shape during her four-year marriage to John Coltrane and after his 1967 death. By 1983, Alice had established the 48-acre Sai Anantam Ashram outside of Los Angeles. She quietly began recording music from the ashram, releasing it within her spiritual community in the form of private press cassette tapes. Luaka Bop is pleased to present the first-ever compilation of recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public for the first time. Entitled World Spirituality Classics, Volume 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, the release is the first installment in a planned series of spiritual music from around the globe; curated, compiled and distributed by Luaka Bop.

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Recorded in the basement studio of the Coltrane family home in Dix Hills in 1970, Alice Coltrane's fourth album is a transcendent masterpiece of spiritual jazz. The title track is an ode to the Egyptian God, Ptah (the El Daoud meaning "the beloved"). Many moments on the album reach what Coltrane herself defined the term Turiya as: "a state of consciousness - the high state of Nirvana, the goal of human life." Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl pressed at Third Man in Detroit Transferred from Analog Tapes.

Two of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of all time, First time budget price for both albums on 1 CD. [Giant Steps] "perhaps Coltrane's most playable, memorable, and best-sustained record. The tunes are uniformly marvellous, riffs or steps or even melodies which have become integral parts of the modern jazz book" [MFT] "dominated by his soprano sax.. The important thing is that both Coltrane and Tyner reduce the material to a couple of scales and ignore the changes, without forgetting to return to the main theme.gives the music a suitably endless feel" (Penguin Jazz Guide)

Three CD collection focussing on the spiritual explorations of the two greatest melodic creators on the planet. John Coltrane played tenor on Miles Davis' monumental 'Kind of Blue', an album that was a template for the style of modal improvisation to which he would devote himself in the fertile early 60s. A period which would culminate in his career masterpiece 'A Love Supreme'. The modal approach freed Coltrane to improvise with limitless invention on a sensual carpet of sound and bore immediate (if highly controversial) fruit with 'My Favorite Things', his expansive meditation on the popular song from 'The Sound of Music'. But success in itself did not satisfy Coltrane. He had encountered the music of Ravi Shankar and became entranced by it's serenity; a quality he longed to find in his own work. Eventually the two men met and liked each other enormously. Ravi saw much of himself in Coltrane; he admired that the saxophonist had overcome heroin addition, become a vegetarian, taken to reading Ramakrishna, and had committed himself to a rigorous regime of practice and study. They discussed Indian classical music and the possibility of recording an album together but their plans came to nothing as Coltrane tragically succumbed to liver cancer shortly before they were due to meet again.

John Coltrane's 1961 masterpiece "My Favorite Things" famously reimagines the cheerful Broadway standard into a hypnotic, modal journey that served as a bridge between traditional jazz and his later avant-garde explorations. It stands as a landmark recording for being the first to showcase Coltrane on the soprano saxophone and for introducing the initial lineup of his legendary "Classic Quartet".

Vinyl LP pressing. "Coltrane" is the John Coltrane's debut album as a leader, meaning this is the first time he was the primary artist, leading the session occurred just after his period with Miles Davis. Earlier in 1957, Coltrane had been fired by Davis (in April) over drug-related problems, then spent time in Philadelphia dealing with those issues. Musically, though his mature, iconic style was still developing, you can see him stretching: a real work with complex standards and original compositions, experimenting with phrasing and the form. Released in October 1957 (recorded May 31, 1957 at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey) the album didn't make a major splash on release, Coltrane was still mostly known as Miles Davis's sideman and briefly as a member of Thelonious Monk's quartet. Prestige Records wasn't promoting him heavily; they were more focused on Miles, Rollins, and others. But what critics called "first glimpse" of Coltrane will be in future an important record valued as the document of his emerging sound, especially his work with harmony, phrasing, and that "sheets of sound" style that he'd refine later. A mix of tradition and forward-looking impulses Gives us the early seeds of the Coltrane sound: intensity, harmonic exploration, spiritual searching.

Vinyl LP pressing. The Best of John Coltrane captures the legendary saxophonist in his most formative and creative years with Prestige. Curated from his prolific 1957-1958 output, this LP features selections that spotlight Coltrane's rapid artistic evolution as an original tenor saxophonist. Featuring both American songbook classics and jazz standards, it is both the perfect introduction for new listeners and a prized acquisition for aficionados, presenting the recordings that cemented John Coltrane's legacy.

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things / Coltrane's classic Atlantic album from 1961 gets the Rhino Reserve treatment. This is his first recorded use of the soprano sax which he would go on to play extensively until the end. The modal exploration of the title track is something he would return to in live performances for the rest of his career. Cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed on 180g black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing.
