This 1963 LP marked the last album Bill Evans made for his first label, Riverside, and was the second of two live recordings which Evans did for the label (the other resulted in the iconic Village Vanguard LPs). But above all, these two nights at Shelly Manne's club in Hollywood marked the only recording by Evans' excellent but short-term third trio, featuring Chuck Israels on bass and LA drummer Larry Bunker. The trio performs a selection of standards with a melodic and sensitive touch. Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. Evans' use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.

This enjoyable set from vibraphonist Red Norvo features his 1957 quintet: Bob Drasnin on flute and alto, guitarist Jim Wyble, bassist Buddy Clark and drummer Bill Douglass. The music is essentially cool-toned bop that swings hard but lightly; an excellent setting for Norvo's vibes. In addition to two of Red's originals ("Spiders' Web" and "Scorpion's Nest"), the band performs six superior standards.

The 1965 release E.S.P. is often referred to as the first album of Miles Davis's second great quintet. The young guns in the quintet are superb, with Miles being pushed in new directions by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. E.S.P. is post-bop excursion into mostly modal songs with Miles, Wayne and Herbie playing interlocking melodies that they improvise and fracture into something new. San Francisco-based jazz musician Vince Guaraldi had already established himself as a pianist and composer, first with Cal Tjader and then as a leader of his own group, when producer Lee Mendelson came knocking. Mendelson had been enchanted by Guaraldi's 1963 surprise hit single, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," and asked him to write some original music for a documentary to be entitled A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Though the program didn't air at the time, Guaraldi's music so perfectly captured the mood and character of Peanuts, that he was invited to write the soundtrack for the first Peanuts special that did air, 1965's landmark A Charlie Brown Christmas. And the rest is history

Triple vinyl LP pressing in tri-gatefold cover. Considering the monumental depth of Sun Ra's recorded oeuvre, there are surprisingly few solo piano albums. Monorails and Satellites Volumes 1 and 2 were the first commercial LPs of the artist's solo keyboard excursions. Recorded in 1966 and released on his Saturn imprint in 1968, Volume 1 featured seven idiosyncratic originals and one standard ("Easy Street") delivered in Sunny's singular manner. Volume 2 was released the following year, and contains five compositions, all originals. A third volume was prepped but shelved, and this deluxe edition marks it's premiere release. As with all Cosmic Myth releases these volumes are superbly mastered with copious liners notes by renown American jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, and additional overviews by jazz historian Ben Young and producer Irwin Chusid.

George Benson was only 21 when, on May 1, 1964, he recorded his first album as a leader, the New Boss Guitar of George Benson. At that point, the guitarist had yet to become a huge name in jazz, although many of those who knew Benson agreed that he showed great potential. This is an impressive debut. The guitarist had developed a distinctive, recognizable sound on his instrument, and he plays with both feeling and technique on five Benson originals (including the sly "Shadow Dancers, " the exuberant "Rock-A-Bye, " and the earthy blues "I Don't Know") as well as interpretations of "Easy Living" and "Will You Still Be Mine." This album is historically important as well as rewarding.

For Music Volume 3: Herb Alpert Reimagines The Tijuana Brass, beloved and prolific musician Herb Alpert has revisited some of his most iconic songs with the Tijuana Brass, and transformed them. This reinvention of historic recordings like "A Taste Of Honey," "Lonely Bull," "Spanish Flea" and many more were "scrambled up," as Herb says. A mix of new arrangements, production, new studio takes and in some case even samples of the originals were used to make them fresh and surprising, and a way for Herb to continue sharing positivity with a world in need of it. The album also finds Herb continuing his partnership with producer Jochem van der Saag. Several of the songs on Music Volume 3 appeared on albums during an unprecedented run in 1966, when four Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass releases were on the Billboard Top 10 at the same time. Music Volume 3 begins appropriately with "The Lonely Bull," Alpert's first smash hit. It includes a surprising mash-up, too - of "Spanish Flea" into "Rise," two famous songs blended together here for the first time.
