Recorded live at London's celebrated Wigmore Hall, this captivating recital by Joyce DiDonato and the Brentano Quartet was conceived around Jake Heggie's song cycle Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, a work written for DiDonato - she describes it as "one of most moving projects I've ever been part of". These ardent and passionate works are microcosms of Monteverdi's great operas and among his most celebrated music. The eighth book of madrigals introduces the genere concitato - (agitated style) that Monteverdi devised to convey the emotions of war, whether physical or psychological. Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda sets an extended passage from Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata. Tasso's text, set in the time of the first crusade, tells of the combat between the Christian knight Tancredi and the Saracen maiden Clorinda. Most of the action is conveyed by a narrator, sung here by celebrated tenor James Gilchrist.
On this album the young Spanish soprano Sylvia Schwartz, accompanied by pianist Malcolm Martineau, offers a deeply seductive collection of romantic Spanish songs. The recording includes works by Granados and Turina as well as less familiar composers such as Guridi, Toldr+i and Montsalvatge. Schwartz demonstrates her wonderful emotional and dramatic range in Granados's Tonadillas en estilo antiguo, a set inspired by the paintings of Goya, and her commitment to this repertoire is evident from her utterly enchanting performance of the folk-influenced songs by Guridi that set a beautiful series of Castillan melodies.

Toy was recorded following David's triumphant Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band - Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer and Emm Gryner - to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. David planned to record the album 'old school' with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible in a remarkably prescient manner. Unfortunately, it was never issued. Exclusive to the Brilliant Adventure (1992 - 2001) box set are BBC Radio Theatre, London, June 27, 2000 and RE: CALL 5. The former was recorded two days after the famous Glastonbury performance in front of 500 lucky fans at the BBC's art deco theatre in central London. Selections from the show were available as the third CD in a very limited 3CD edition of BOWIE AT THE BEEB in September 2000 but the full concert has never before been available on vinyl.
