First major American Romantic composer; studied in Europe and blended German Romantic style with American themes. Woodland Sketches (especially 'To a Wild Rose') is his most enduring work.

Signature works: Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, Indian Suite for Orchestra, Sonata Tragica.
