Masters of the Guitar, Vol. 5: Italian Recordings, 1930s-1950s
In Italy, the guitar had a difficult time being considered a classical instrument like it was in other countries. The first guitar course was instituted in Italian conservatories in 1965 but even in the 70s and 80s many Concerto Societies did not have or promote even the most internationally famous guitarists. This new release collects six performances by guitar students. The album begins with Pasquale Taraffo, who can be considered the perfect example of a performer on the edge between classical and popular music. The album ends with Mario Parodi, an extraordinary performer and musician who is unfortunately often overlooked. The other four protagonists of this new release are part of the Italian guitar revival: from Giulio Giulietti, to Luigi Mozzani and from Luigi Mariotti to Mario Gangi, who made classical guitar famous throughout Italy with his television appearances.
Albéniz, Granados et al.: Master of Guitar vol. 4, Spain 1926-63 / Rodes, Anido, Diaz Cano, Gómez, Llobet, Sainz de la Maza, Iglesias, Angel
Children's Corner - Music for Guitar / Smith
This selection of transcriptions celebrates childhood in a variety of ways, featuring popular works – Schubert’s Erlkönig, Granados’s atmospheric Tales of Youth, Mozart’s elegant Sonata facile, Schumann’s Scenes of Childhood and Debussy’s Children’s Corner – presented in a totally natural and idiomatic manner within the guitar’s distinctly expressive soundworld.
Guitar Recital / Raphael Feuillatre
There are two aspects underlying this recording by Raphael Feuillatre, First Prize winner at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 2018: original works for the guitar and transcriptions. Among the former is Villa-Lobos’s Prelude No. 5, part of one of the most evocative and Romantic guitar cycles of the 20th century, the Chopinesque brilliance of the inventive Valse by Barrios Mangore, and the compendium of virtuosity that is Llobet’s Variations on a Theme of Sor. The transcriptions range from Rameau, through Rachmaninov’s pianistic showcase, the Prelude No. 4, Op. 23, to the superbly evocative Alfonsina y el mar by Ariel Ramirez.
Alicia de Larrocha plays Granados
Sony Music Entertainment is pleased to announce another ten releases in its increasingly comprehensive series of Classical Masters. These new box sets contain classic interpretations by some of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. No pianist has been more closely associated with the music of Granados than Spain’s beloved Alicia de Larrocha. Praising her in this repertoire, wrote ClassicsToday.com “is tantamount to giving fresh air a good review”. The new release collects her last traversals of this music in the studio, made for RCA in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The most substantial of these haunting works is Granados’ masterpiece Goyescas. In Alicia de Larrocha’s valedictory recording from 1989, “her seasoned mastery of Granados’ complex textures and innate affinity for his colorful idiom assert themselves in every measure. You won’t find a more recommendable Goyescas” (ClassicsToday.com).
Granados: Danzas Espanolas / Douglas Riva
Enrique Granados performed extensively in Spain, France and the United States, collaborating with many of the leading artists of his day. His first masterpiece was the collection of 12 Danzas españolas, refined and expressive evocations of the richness of Spain’s regions and dances, which gained high praise by composers as diverse as Massenet, Saint-Saëns, Grieg and Cui. By turns vivacious, melancholy and hypnotic, they are as fresh as his poetic Improvisation on the Valencian Jota, heard here in a transcription from a piano roll recording made by Granados himself.
