Sister of Felix Mendelssohn; composed primarily piano music and lieder. Long underrepresented due to gender; receiving renewed scholarly and performance attention. Intimate chamber and solo piano works are her defining output.

Signature works: Das Jahr (The Year), for piano, Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 11, Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without Words), Schwanenlied.
