The results were magic. It's release helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, Joao Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado", into an internationally celebrated musician.

This 26 track CD presents studio output from one of Stan Getz' finest bands, the quintet he co-led with the guitarist Jimmy Raney (featured here) during the early 1950's. These recordings ably demonstrate why Getz had recently become one of the most influential musicians in jazz. Ballads like "Autumn Leaves" and "These Foolish Things" are amongst his finest early work, whilst up-tempo swingers like "The Way You Look Tonight" reveal that Getz could still hit hard without breaking a sweat. Besides the guitar of Raney, Getz sideman on this CD include some of the most talented names in 1950's jazz including the pianists Horace Silver, Al Haig and Duke and the legendary drummer Roy Haynes. A classic live recording from the Keystone Korner Jazz Club in San Francisco and with great sound, this is vintage late Getz and includes some of his best performances of standards like "Easy Living," "Sweet Lorraine," "Old Devil Moon," "I'm Old Fashioned" and the title track. Now out of print on regular CD, this SACD reissue will only enhance what is already an excellent Getz title.

Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio, released in 1958 on Verve Records, documents a rare meeting between two contrasting but complementary jazz greats: the cool-toned tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and the hard-driving Oscar Peterson Trio. Produced by Norman Granz and recorded in Hollywood in October 1957, the session finds Getz joining a veteran rhythm section already regarded as one of the most cohesive in jazz: Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Ray Brown on bass. While Getz was often heard in more subdued or orchestrated contexts during this period, this session highlights his command of bebop language and small-group swing. Peterson's trio, known for it's drive and responsiveness, adapts fluidly to Getz's tone and phrasing, yielding a session marked by relaxed interplay, rhythmic clarity, and understated virtuosity.
