Wes recorded this 1963 Riverside LP with the backing of B-3 master Melvin Rhyne and always-inspiring drummer Jimmy Cobb. The brilliant fretwork of the Trick Bag ; the funky Fried Pies ; the swinging the Breeze and I, and the gorgeous Days of Wine and Roses are here, as are three bonus alternate takes!

Once in a while a musician comes along with impeccable technique, deep understanding of the jazz repertoire, an innate tendency to swing and the rare ability to communicate the heart and soul of a tune to listeners. That musician is Beegie Adair. About her music Adair says, "Falling in love with jazz is like falling in love with a person, except with jazz you never get over it." About Beegie (say B-G) Adair, what do others say? Jazz great Helen Merrill salutes her "inventive jazz sense, her wonderful sense of time and improvised melody." Christopher Louden of Jazz Times magazine says Adair is "an accomplished artist with a delicate touch." The Los Angeles Times calls her music "Elegant." Entertainment News writes, "Beegie Adair is one of the finest piano players in the world." Intrigued? So are thousands of jazz fans, who agree with critics about Adair's sophisticated and listenable jazz performances, and who have made her recordings among the biggest sellers in the jazz world. Citing George Shearing, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner among her influences, Adair has recorded 24 CDs, ranging from Cole Porter standards to Frank Sinatra classics to romantic World War II ballads. Her 6-CD Centennial Composers Collection of tunes by Rodgers, Gershwin, Kern, Ellington, Carmichael and Berlin became an instant collectible classic when it was released in 2002. Kentucky born and raised, Adair lives and records in Nashville - something of a surprise to people who associate the city solely with country music. In fact Nashville lives up to it's "Music City" nickname by hosting a vibrant jazz scene, in which she has been a leading light for decades. A sought-after studio musician in her early days there, Adair accompanied such legendary performers as Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash - and also worked with Lucille Ball, Dinah Shore, Mama Cass Elliott and Peggy Lee. Her guests on Improvised Thoughts, Beegie's radio talk/music show on the local NPR affiliate, included such greats as Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Marian McPartland, Benny Golson and Helen Merrill. She has guested on McPartland's Piano Jazz show and has performed with Nat Adderley, Bill Watrous, Lew Tabackin, Terry Clarke, Urbie Green and Jim Ferguson, among many others. When she's not in the studio or appearing in clubs and concert halls around the country, Adair wears a variety of hats, from adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University to teacher and mentor at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Recently she co-wrote and scored an innovative theatrical production, Betsy, which in April 2006 premiered off-Broadway in New York. She has recorded eight projects for Village Square Records in Nashville; her most recent CDs are Sentimental Journey, a popular collection of World War II-era songs, and a solo piano recording, Quiet Romance. She performs solo and with the Beegie Adair Trio, whose members include drummer Chris Brown, a veteran of the Maynard Ferguson ensemble, and bassist Roger Spencer, who has played with the Les Brown Band, Ray Conniff, the Page Cavanaugh Trio and Pete Jolly. They are, she says, "my main guys. They're so tuned into the way I visualize music that it's effortless to play with them." In clubs and concert venues from Los Angeles to New York, Beegie and her "main guys" win kudos from audiences and critics alike who appreciate her unique take on classic jazz. She fell in love with the music a long time ago, and indeed she's never gotten over it -- a love affair the jazz world is much the better for.

Sandro Fuga became a leading figure in Turin’s musical life in the mid-20th century. His passion for art and music was inherited from his eminent Venetian family which included grandfather Luigi Nono among its members. Few Italian composers of Fuga’s generation broached the sonata genre, but these three works represent the summit of his piano music, together forming a triptych of considerable significance. Fuga considered himself a ‘Romantic survivor’, believing music to represent the expression of emotions. Thanks to his rejection of avant-garde ephemera and a profound faith in humanity, his piano sonatas are expressive, eloquent and emotionally compelling.

When we think of Ludwig van Beethoven images of a stormy and passionate but tortured genius are brought to mind, alongside the transformative effect of his work on musical history. All of these things are true, but no artist lives in a vacuum, and even music that opens a portal onto ‘the infinite realm of the spirit’ has its wider context. Illustrated with music from each period, this enlightening life history by esteemed musicologist Davinia Caddy tells us about Beethoven’s place in society from his earlier career as a fine pianist, his life on the edge of the Napoleonic war, his professional triumphs and many romantic misfortunes, and that famous defiance of deafness and declaration that he would ‘seize Fate by the throat’. The musical excerpts include the ‘Pathétique’ and ‘Moonlight’ Sonatas, ‘Diabelli’ Variations, Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 6 and 9, ‘Emperor’ Concerto, Missa solemnis and Fidelio, among many others.

Vinyl LP pressing. As far as B-3 Hammond organ is concerned, Jimmy Smith is the greatest ever at that instrument. Like the best recordings of the greatest period for improvisational jazz that lasted from about 1950 to the late 1960's, The Sermon is only one example of the numerous sessions that many top notch players gathered for, taking turns as leaders and sidemen. On The Sermon, Smith is accompanied by the likes such as Kenny Burrell, Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks and Art Blakey. It was produced by Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note, and was Smith's fifteenth album in three years. The Sermon is a bebop-hardbop masterclass and at least a decade ahead of it's time.

The exciting original compositions on Come Fly With Me were inspired by everything from a Tito Puente rhythm Alpert fell in love with (the propulsive "Night Ride") to jamming with his world class band in between shows on tour (the fun, reggae-infused "Cheeky" was born of these sessions). On "Walkin' Tall", another track with a punchy reggae beat, Alpert's trumpet melody slinks and slides. Herb's take on one of Frank Sinatra's most famous recordings, "Come Fly With Me," is set to a groovy bossa nova beat with the surprising addition of a steel drum. His sparse take on George Harrison's "Something" includes the use of an electronic instrument known as an EVI, to play the signature guitar lick from the original recording.

This historic broadcast recording was always counted as one of the best recordings of this opera. With the best singers of the Frankfurt opera after WW II like Heinrich Bensing, there was always a demand for a release of this recording. Thanks to a collector who made a direct master copy of the original broadcast tape in the early 50's, Walhall is able to release it in great sound.
The young Swiss violinist David Nebel recorded under the direction of Kristjan Järvi exceptional works by two of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century: The rarely recorded Violin Concerto No.1 by American minimalist composer Philip Glass and Igor Stravinsky's neoclassical Violin Concerto in D.
When Glass (*1937) was a boy, the first instrument of his own that he had was a violin. However, Glass did not write his Violin Concerto No. 1 until his fiftieth year. It was his very first large-scale orchestral work, premiered in New York City on 5 April 1987. Glass composed the work for his father Ben Glass, as a piece that he thought his father might have liked had he lived to be able to hear it. The piece quickly became very popular with its exclamatory and exciting first movement, a sumptuous and brilliantly patient second movement and a thrilling third movement with perhaps the most captivating coda that Glass has ever written.
The Violin Concerto in D with four movements instead of the usual three was composed in Stravinsky’s (1882–1971) Neoclassical period in 1931. In this work Stravinsky explored the forms of Baroque music, especially the concerto grosso principle, and gave solo passages to the orchestral musicians in many places, where individual instruments are involved in charming dialogues with the solo violin.
Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto was recorded with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, and Glass’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the London Symphony Orchestra.
In 1981 Tenor Sax legend Illinois Jacquet pursued his career-long dream of assembling a truly great big jazz band in the tradition of his mentors, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, bands with whom he recorded and toured in his youth. He would apply all the wisdom and experience he gleaned as their sideman, as well as from his years of leadership over his many small groups, and would include songs he made famous with his "little big band" of the 1940s. The Illinois Jacquet Big Band was filled with luminaries and young stars, but unfortunately would only record one studio album entitled "Jacquet's Got It" on Atlantic Records, in 1987. Here, for the first time in history, we have a snapshot of what that band was like on the road, playing live In Berlin at Philharmonic Hall. As listeners will easily hear, this band rocked the house, and swung hard! Illinois himself is in rare form, playing soulfully and strong, ripping through all his classics with fervor and fire. These wonderful arrangements are mostly by the pen of Eddie Barefield, Wild Bill Davis, and Phil Wilson. Featured here within the band are veterans such as Irvin Stokes, Johnny Grimes, Richard Wyands, Eddie Barefield, Rudy Rutherford, and Babe Clarke; as well as young lions such as Frank Lacy, Joey Cavaseno, Jesse Davis, and Henry Scott.

Puerto Rico-born composer Roberto Sierra is internationally renowned for his integration of Caribbean music with the Western idioms he acquired during studies in Europe. The character of Kandinsky ranges from the intimate to the bold and virtuosic, responding with fresh and surprising impressions to a selection of Wassily Kandinsky's unique paintings. The 'Clarinet Sonata' explores the intricate swing of Caribbean mixed meters and instrumental colors in a work of stunning expressiveness and virtuosity. Sierra's longest chamber work to date, 'Treinta y tres formas de mirar un mismo objeto,' was composed for Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, and is also one of the most substantial works in the repertoire for two performers at a single piano. This recording was made possible in part by grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency, and Cornell University.

For his maiden release on Origin, Northwest bassist Jon Hamar eschews the traditional piano trio format to explore the textural, dynamic and melodic possibilities of a decidedly unconventional instrumental configuration. Bolstered by the lithe and profuse alto saxophonist, Todd DelGiudice, and the illustriously versatile Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Hamar puts forth an intelligent collection of original compositions and sagacious arrangements that highlights the alluring interplay of these three very distinct voices. "... in this collection, Hamar achieves the balance of thoughtfulness and risk-taking that characterizes the most successful jazz ventures." - Doug Ramsey
