On 'Gypsy', originally released in 1998 and now re-issued as part of Linn's ECHO series, Martin Taylor combines his strong, engaging stage presence with his signature style on this spirited live album recorded in 1997, dazzling audiences with a combination of virtuosity, emotion and humor. His Spirit of Django band re-works compositions by Django Reinhardt and tracks the late Gypsy guitarist made famous, such as 'Chicago' and 'Sweet Sue Just You'. 'The Tipsy Gypsy' provides the centerpiece for the opening medley, written by Bluegrass mandolinist David Grisman.

This is the definitive collection of Charles Mackerras’s Mozart recordings for Linn, with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Comprising nine symphonies plus the Requiem, this box set exemplifies why Mackerras was acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest Mozartians and the SCO is internationally recognized as one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras. Mackerras’s recording of Mozart’s four late symphonies (Nos. 38-41) won multiple awards: the 2009 Classical BRITs Critics’ Award and the 2009BBC Music Magazine Disc of the Year and Orchestral Awards, whilst his recording of symphonies Nos. 29, 31 (‘Paris’), 32, 35 (‘Haffner’) & 36 (‘Linz’) was named Symphonic Recording of the Year at the 2011 ECHO Klassik Awards. Completing the collection is Mackerras’s recording of the Mozart Requiem, boasting stellar soloists led by soprano Susan Gritton and mezzo Catherine Wyn-Rogers. The score, prepared by the renowned American academic Robert Levin, aims for a more historically authentic performance of the choral masterpiece. It was named a benchmark recording by BBC Music Magazine amongst other accolades. This is a wonderful celebration of the SCO’s Conductor Laureate on the tenth anniversary of his death.

John Dowland's gifts as an exceptional melodist are evident throughout Lachrimae or Seven Tears, an artistic achievement which has cast a remarkable spell on early music. Summing up the Renaissance preoccupation with melancholy, this extraordinary collection of dance music for viols and lute includes Dowland's 'signature' piece, Semper Dowland semper Dolens. Dowland reveals a personal world of sublime sadness, grief, anger and melancholy mollified by moments of joy and gladness. A skilled lutenist, Dowland's intricately-worked parts demand perfect synchronicity between Phantasm and Elizabeth Kenny, who rise to the technical and tempi challenges of marrying their instruments. Although freed from lyric constraints poetic images linger prompting Phantasm's Laurence Dreyfus to describe this as "the most sensuously tuneful hour of music ever written".

Having wowed the critics with it's 2011 recording of 'J.S. Bach: Easter and Ascension Oratorios' Retrospect Ensemble returns with Bach's Harpsichord Concertos. Director Matthew Halls takes on the role of soloist, having proved both his keyboard virtuosity and affinity with Bach's harpsichord music in his debut solo recording, 'J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations', which International Record Review named 'Outstanding'. Founded by Matthew Halls, Retrospect Ensemble takes it's musicians and audiences on an exciting journey, exploring the repertoire of four centuries and embracing the practices, styles and aesthetics of former ages with renewed vigor and a fresh approach. In 2010 the 36-year-old was announced as the Oregon Bach Festival's next artistic director, due to his 'international reputation in the worlds of choral and early music [and] consummate skill as a Bach interpreter.' He shall assume the role in 2013.

In his debut recording with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra oboist Fran�ois Leleux celebrates his dual roles of conductor and soloist as he directs performances of Bizet and Gounod. Following several successful collaborations, including a season as a Featured Artist, Leleux has established a strong rapport with the SCO. The programme features Bizet's Symphony in C, written in two months when the French composer was just eighteen, which is simply full of life, exuding brilliance, charm, wit and wonderful tunes. The Scotsman described his interpretation as 'brisk, urgent, full of bite, and as playful as you could ever want it to be'. Leleux is particularly suited to performing Gounod's Petite Symphonie, which was written for nine of the finest wind players in Paris. Directing from the oboe, Leleux joins the SCO section principals as they demonstrate the strength of their chamber music instincts in a performance which sparkles with personality and individuality. To complete the programme Leleux takes listeners to the opera with a suite from Bizet's Carmen bursting with the drama, passion and entrancing melodies that set this iconic opera apart.

The eighth volume in the Linn Collection series features a selection of tracks encompassing the latest releases from the label’s catalog of award-winning artists. The collection opens with Nothing’s Changed, an original song by the charismatic Joe Stilgoe. Via Haydn and Chopin, Gottlieb Wallisch and Ingrid Fliter represent Linn’s stable of pianists. Five-star review recipients Thomas Søndergård and Robin Ticciati are heard to conduct Sibelius and Schumann respectively. And John Butt’s solo outing of Bach’s famous ‘48’ was named ‘Outstanding’ by the Int’l Record Review.
