Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1963 live show by the Jazz great which was not officially released in 1977. Coltrane fronts a stellar quartet on both European dates that includes McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. In addition to the nine tracks that appeared in the original Afro Blue Impressions double album, the reissue also includes three bonus tracks from a Stockholm date. When you compare and contrast the performance of a composition that was released on the original album to a different performance of the same composition from among the bonus tracks, says Afro Blue Impressions reissue producer Nick Phillips, it perfectly illustrates just how restlessly creative Coltrane and his band were. Each song was a springboard for unpredictable improvisation and boundless creativity.

1957 was an important year in the career of John Coltrane, one of the jazz world's most influential and dynamic innovators. By the age of 31 the tenor saxophonist had already made an impact with a powerful, yet still evolving style. While more excitement lay ahead Coltrane, the first record made under his own leadership, shows a confident, commanding presence tempered with a willingness to work as a team player with his fellow musicians. The result is an album that embraces all the virtues of the hard bop school of modern jazz. Cleverly wrought arrangements, hypnotic themes, intense moods and creative soloing are underpinned by the time-honoured pulse of swing, always a satisfying staple ingredient.

Vinyl LP pressing. Reissue. Recorded in NYC in 1958 and originally released in 1959 as The Cecil Taylor Quintet - Hard Driving Jazz this is in fact the only existing document of the meeting between John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor. Even if caught at an early stage in their career the two masters show great personality and deep respect for each other while trumpeter Kenny Dorham sticks more to his familiar bop idiom. Cordially backed up by Chuck Israel on bass and Louis Hayes, Coltrane swings madly on Taylor's dissonant comping producing a rare, fascinating friction between two worlds. A must for every Coltrane maniac out there.

Audiophile reviews rave about saxophone master John Coltrane's immortal Impulse! Records, A Love Supreme (1964) and Ballads (1963). Ballads is an album that will never go out of style and never be unwelcome on any jazz lover's turntable. You're about to experience Ballads at it's peak of vinyl perfection - in UHQR format on Clarity Vinyl, with the added bonus of a double 45 RPM cut by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. Ryan's cut has his characteristic clarity and transparency all set against Quality Record Pressing's usual noiseless backgrounds on 200-gram flawless records. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product. For this 45 RPM 2LP edition you'll also receive a 12' x 12' 12-page booklet featuring liner notes by Ashley Kahn and recording session images by Jim Marshall. The intense passionate Coltrane interpretation of standards such as 'All Or Nothing At All, ' 'What's New, ' 'It's Easy To Remember' and the Sinatra classic 'Nancy (With The Laughing Face)' are the essence of Ballads. When asked why attempt such an undertaking, Coltrane replied 'Variety.' While it may have been a short detour by Trane before he exploded off into the nether regions of jazz music a few years later, it is still a fantastic document of one of the premier jazz groups of the 1960s. Recorded December 21, 1961 and September 18 & November 13, 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder Studios. * Analogue Productions' UHQR, the pinnacle of high-quality vinyl! * 45 RPM Ultra High Quality Record release limited to 5, 000 copies * Mastered from the original tape by Ryan K. Alice Coltrane's devotion to spirituality was the central purpose of the final four decades of her life, an often-overlooked awakening that largely took shape during her four-year marriage to John Coltrane and after his 1967 death. By 1983, Alice had established the 48-acre Sai Anantam Ashram outside of Los Angeles. She quietly began recording music from the ashram, releasing it within her spiritual community in the form of private press cassette tapes. Luaka Bop is pleased to present the first-ever compilation of recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public for the first time. Entitled World Spirituality Classics, Volume 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, the release is the first installment in a planned series of spiritual music from around the globe; curated, compiled and distributed by Luaka Bop.

The title track is an ode to the Egyptian God, Ptah (the El Daoud meaning "the beloved"). Many moments on the album reach what Coltrane herself defined the term Turiya as: "a state of consciousness - the high state of Nirvana, the goal of human life." Analogue Productions (Atlantic Series) Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Atlantic Records! John Coltrane's watershed 1960 release featuring the iconic title track and 'Naima' One of the most influential jazz albums of all time! 180-gram 45 RPM double LP Mastered directly from the original master tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound Pressed at Quality Record Pressings Tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing Released in 1960, Giant Steps was a watershed album for John Coltrane, solidifying the saxophone legend's reputation as one of the most influential and innovative musicians in jazz history, as well as delivering jazz to an increasingly mainstream audience, while garnering significant critical acclaim. Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked here by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers - who was the only bandmember other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated - replicating the alternate non-Bill Evans lineup featured on 'Freddie the Freeloader' on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos - enabling the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style using melodic phrasing that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed 'sheets of sound.' The Giant Steps chord progression consists of a distinctive set of chords that create key centers a major third apart. Jazz musicians ever since have used it as a practice piece, it's difficult chord changes presenting a 'kind of ultimate harmonic challenge', and serving as a gateway into modern jazz improvisation. Several pieces on this album went on to become jazz standards, most prominently 'Naima' and 'Giant Steps.' The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of it's suggested 'Core Collection' calling it 'Trane's first genuinely iconic record.' In 2003, the album was ranked No. 102 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, 103 in a 2012 revised list, and 232 in a 2020 revised list. Undeniable music perfection deserves definitive sound and top-notch packaging. This reissue was mastered directly from the original master tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and cut at 45 RPM. Pressed at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing. Overall, Giant Steps is not only a critical triumph but also a defining moment in John Coltrane's career. It's innovative compositions, masterful performances, and profound influence on jazz make it an essential entry in Coltrane's discography and a timeless masterpiece in the history of the genre. Tracklist: 0 Side 1 1 Giant Steps 2 Cousin Mary 3 4 Side 2 5 Countdown 6 Spiral 7 8 Side 3 9 Syeeda's Song Flute 10 11 Side D 12 Naima 13 Mr. P.C.

Two of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of all time, First time budget price for both albums on 1 CD. [Giant Steps] "perhaps Coltrane's most playable, memorable, and best-sustained record. The tunes are uniformly marvellous, riffs or steps or even melodies which have become integral parts of the modern jazz book" [MFT] "dominated by his soprano sax.. The important thing is that both Coltrane and Tyner reduce the material to a couple of scales and ignore the changes, without forgetting to return to the main theme.gives the music a suitably endless feel" (Penguin Jazz Guide)

The year 1958 represented a transitional period in John Coltrane's musical career. He had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. In the intervening years, he overcame his narcotics addiction and began to expand on his own musical ideas while experimenting with both the Thelonious Monk Quartet and the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley). He also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. These quartets were, in many ways, the predecessors of the 1960 John Coltrane Quartet, and Soultrane, is a good example of this. 180-GRAM COLORED RED VINYL - THE COMPLETE ALBUM + 1 BONUS TRACK - Contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide to Jazz's writer BRIAN MORTON and by Paris' prestigious JAZZ MAGAZINE. Three CD collection focussing on the spiritual explorations of the two greatest melodic creators on the planet. John Coltrane played tenor on Miles Davis' monumental 'Kind of Blue', an album that was a template for the style of modal improvisation to which he would devote himself in the fertile early 60s. A period which would culminate in his career masterpiece 'A Love Supreme'. The modal approach freed Coltrane to improvise with limitless invention on a sensual carpet of sound and bore immediate (if highly controversial) fruit with 'My Favorite Things', his expansive meditation on the popular song from 'The Sound of Music'. But success in itself did not satisfy Coltrane. He had encountered the music of Ravi Shankar and became entranced by it's serenity; a quality he longed to find in his own work. Eventually the two men met and liked each other enormously. Ravi saw much of himself in Coltrane; he admired that the saxophonist had overcome heroin addition, become a vegetarian, taken to reading Ramakrishna, and had committed himself to a rigorous regime of practice and study. They discussed Indian classical music and the possibility of recording an album together but their plans came to nothing as Coltrane tragically succumbed to liver cancer shortly before they were due to meet again.
