The two-time winner of Grammy Awards, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (b. Baltimore, Sept. 26, 1940) studied music at the Julliard School in New York. He then worked with many prominent players like Max Roach, Art Blakey, Blue Mitchell, McCoy Tyner in the 60s. His international fame came when he joined Miles Davis in the early 70s. He made his SteepleChase recording debut with Jackie McLean in 1973 ("Ode To Super" SCCD 31009). 15 years later he went into a studio in Copenhagen with the band he was touring with in Europe (except Butch Lacy replacing Joanne Brackeen on piano) to make this second album for SteepleChase. Bartz received the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy Award. He is Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Oberlin College. SOL is the first solo work by the Luxembourg percussionist, composer and vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher. Already in his childhood, he chose the vibraphone as an exotic and fascinating instrument, as it's shiny plates and step-shaped tubes sound metallic and, at the same time, soft and ethereal when struck with a mallet. A trance-like state is created in the listener, whom Schumacher skillfully abducts from everyday life through filigree played original compositions and covers by Chilly Gonzales, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jarvis Cocker, and Mike Oldfield. If we assume that the concept for Arash Safaian's album uberBach - which won the ECHO Klassik Award 2017 in the "Classical Music without Borders" category - was to compose music in which you could feel Bach without Bach being "there", then the release of Mondholz: Remixes & Canons is the continuation of this concept. It contains two original tracks as well as two remixes by renowned electronic producer Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince - who smilingly claims that he was born with music in his cradle, as his parents played music all the time, even before he was born - in which Weber applies "the rules of Pantha Du Prince" to Safaian's music. Safaian says: "For me, the poetry of this album is that the universal architecture of the canon is united with the principle of dance." The two artists see this as a dream pairing: "I simply felt that he had the same feelings towards Bach," Safaian explains about Weber. "For me, Black Noise is one of the best electronic albums ever; I hear an encrypted polyphony in his music, the origin of which comes from nature. No one else came into question for the collaboration on my album." The result is a flawless combination of Bach's revolutionary style with Safaian's extraordinary reinterpretation of the original work - performed by Sebastian Knauer, Pascal Schumacher (vibraphone) and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra - rounded off by the electronic compositional artistry of Pantha Du Prince.

When Goteborg Jazz Orchestra (GJO) - and the founders Mats Eklund and Johnny Olsson - laid out plans for the band's Monday night concerts for 2021 they came up with the concert series "Swedish Jazz Heroes", playing the music and telling the story of the role models who have shaped Swedish jazz of today. They came across the trombonist Eje Thelin and his last work, the suite Raggruppamento. The suite was firts performed and recorded live by the Radiojazz gruppen (RJG) in 1989 in the presence of Eje, but since he himself was too ill, he chose to let guitarist Goran Klinghagen play his feature parts and solos.

Paavo Jarvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich present the second volume of their complete Mahler Symphonies, with his First Symphony, known as the "Titan" in reference to the eponymous novel by the poet Jean-Paul that Mahler greatly admired. Although he abandoned this title three years after the symphony's premiere in 1893, the symphony has, like many of Mahler's works, "a clearly programmatic character" according to Paavo Jarvi: "Mahler was a composer who was truly able to explore the inner world of human beings and to question what goes on inside us."
