Three years ago, Jerome Leclercq and I from Mediatoon Licensing came up with the idea of creating a cinema concert to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Naruto. Why a cinema concert? The music is part of the success of the licence and fans have a particular attachment to the credits and the original soundtracks. The originality of the music by Toshio Masuda, the composer of Naruto, comes from the clever mix of traditional Japanese instruments, such as the Shakuhachi or the Shamisen, with guitar and other pop/rock instruments. So we came up with the idea of bringing this music to the stage with a 50-strong orchestra, accompanied by an original montage of the best moments from the anime. This orchestra is made up of three parts: symphonic instruments, pop/rock instruments and traditional instruments. To do this, we approached the ODINO orchestra and it's conductor Sylvain Audinovski. The ODINO orchestra is one of those capable of mixing musical styles while maintaining a very high level of performance. We have also chosen traditional Japanese instrumentalists to complete the orchestra's core, especially for the show. The arrangements and musical direction are the fruit of a collaboration between Quentin Benayoun, Sebastien Caviggia and myself. My two accomplices, with whom I formed the group P.U.S.S. in 2007, have a great mastery of rock and orchestral music writing. This mix is essential to keep the promise made to the fans of the series and required several months' work to select the music and write the scores for the whole orchestra. How do you tell the story of Naruto to fans, but also to those who don't know the anime? That's the real challenge of this unique film-concert. How do you select the best moments in the story of this young ninja apprentice from the vastness of the first 220 episodes? Six months of selection and research enabled me to choose the key images in the narrative, while preserving certain dialectics to match the anime's incredible music. This original film-concert, lasting almost 2? hours, is a real Rock-Symphonic show paying tribute to the work of Masashi Kashimoto and the music of Toshio Masuda."

La Nuit Blanche was born out of the pandemic-the music composed at my home in CDMX during lockdown and eventually recorded in NYC (the same weekend I received my second vaccine). There was a unique energy within the group. Musical spirits were allowed to open and release whilst our collective sense of inwardness was discarded for something we all knew how to do: just play. Whatever happened in that Queens studio felt special and seems to have translated to the recording. Aided by Jeff Hill's vibey mix, the music invites you inside to listen or just soak. So lots of love to all the folks involved-I can't wait to hear these jams on wax. PRECIOUSLY few Irish bands can compare in both virtuosity and versatility with Solas, a quintet of truly dazzling individual talents. Multiple All-lreland champion Seamus Egan plays no fewer than eight instruments, John Williams is a gifted button accordionist and the only American ever to win the coveted All-lreland sen- ior concertina title, Winifred Horan weaves deft classical touches with an earthy passion in her fiddling, Karan Casey possesses a crystalline voice that can soar like no other, and John Doyle provides faultless guitar rhythms throughout. But the sum of Solas is far greater than their impressive parts, combining to produce a marvelously spirited and textured sound rich in imagination, innovation, and tradition. They are the most exciting Irish band to emerge in many years - as this stunning debut album attests. - Earle Hitchner, Irish Echo April 1996

Paul Cornish - "You're Exaggerating!". You're Exaggerating! Features Cornish with the rhythm tandem of bassist Joshua Crumbly and drummer Jonathan Pinson, performing nine original compositions, most of them inspired by personal memories, reflections and idols. Helmed by a generous, uplifting bandleader, the trio chops up and reinvents the groove at will and embarks on unforeseen detours. Cornish's approach, in it's even-keeled texture and shrewd harmony, is a sort of mastery that entices rather than merely impresses. Available on 180g vinyl.

Anchored in the idea that, despite all obstacles, the human experience casts a net of possibilities, Defiant Life - Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith's second duo recording for ECM - proves a profound meditation on the human condition and both the suffering and resilience it entails. Recorded within two days at Lugano's Auditorio Stelio Molo, Defiant Life was produced by Manfred Eicher. "This recording session was conditioned by our ongoing sorrow and outrage over the past year's cruelties, but also by our faith in human possibility." - Vijay Iyer

This Was Then is the ninth full-length album by pianist/composer Erik Deutsch. His long-running NYC sextet has once again been enlisted to conjure their magic: Tony Mason on drums, Jeff Hill on bass, Avi Bortnick on drums, Mike McGinnis on Reeds, and Brian Drye on trombone; plus special guests Mauro Refosco on percussion and Victoria Reed on vocals. In between touring full time with The Black Crowes, piloting multiple projects, and recording with an incredible variety of artists, Deutsch has found the time to create an excellent new album of original material. Stylistically, This Was Then may be Deutsch's finest work yet, as the music cruises effortlessly thru genre, tempo, and mood. Sure, some of Deutsch's previous musical tendencies are present once again, but nothing feels like a redux-rather an updated vision or a glance towards a fresh path altogether. The production team of Erik and Jeff Hill has elevated their vision and skill (they've been working together editing, overdubbing, mixing, and producing Deutsch's records since the 2012 release Demonio Teclado). Once presented with what the duo has accomplished sonically, it's nearly impossible to deny the uniqueness present within the artistry of this record. Simply put, "jazz" artists these days don't typically offer this level of production to their records; and having said that, it's clear that Deutsch's vision of jazz music (evident in his catalog over for the past 20 years) has been thoughtful and clear, and that he has continued to not only stay the course but expand and elevate his concept along the way. So sit back, relax, and soak in this musical journey. You may ask yourself "is this record about the memorable compositions? Or the stellar musicianship and improvisation? Or the tones and sonic palettes? Or the production and aural brilliance of the recording?" The answer is whatever you choose it to be, whatever you want it be, and whatever you want from it in that very moment. It's a gift that will continue to give, to reveal more magic upon each listen, and hopefully bring joy and inspiration to your ears and heart. Is it jazz? Is it fusion? Is it cinematic? It's music- made by a musician who cares and a group of talented folks who get it.
