London Symphony Orchestra Leader Roman Simovic steps back into the solo spotlight with a new recording of one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire: Ysa�e's Six Sonatas for Solo Violin. Written in 1923, Eug�ne Ysa�e's set of sonatas represent a musical snapshot of that moment in the evolution of violin playing. An acclaimed violinist himself, each of the sonatas was written for one of Ysa�e's contemporaries: Joseph Szigeti, Jacques Thibaud, George Enescu, Fritz Kreisler, Mathieu Crickboom and Manuel Quiroga. What results is a creative love letter to the violin, challenging and embracing the technical and lyrical possibilities of the instrument throughout the six stylistically unique sonatas. Grammy nominated harpist Brandee Younger has announced a new album, Gadabout Season. Produced by bassist Rashaan Carter, the 10-track record features special guests Shabaka, Courtney Bryan, Niia, and Josh Johnson. The title track, which features vibraphonist Joel Ross, Makaya McCraven on percussion, and Shabaka on clarinet, is out now. Gadabout Season is Younger's third album for the legendary Impulse! Label.

Bennie Maupin has been an inventive contributor to iconic records, including Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi and Headhunters, and Marion Brown's Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun. His recordings under his own name have been infrequent but his leader debut, is indeed a jewel. "A more selfless album is hard to imagine," said DownBeat in 1975. "On The Jewel In The Lotus, the sound is supreme, and all the players strive to achieve a thorough blending." Recorded in New York in 1974, it is a long overdue addition to the ECM Luminessence Series.

Buddy Guy/Junior Wells/Junior Mance - "Buddy And The Juniors (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series)" [180g Heavy Vinyl LP] In 1969, guitarist Buddy Guy got together with his old Chicago blues pal Junior Wells, added in jazz pianist Junior Mance, and cut a loose for an "unplugged" session for Blue Thumb Records that would become the now-legendary album, Buddy And The Juniors. Buddy and the two Juniors were relaxed, cutting familiar tunes like Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" and their own off-the-cuff originals, including "Buddy's Blues." Additionally, two improvised tracks were recorded in a single burst of creative energy: "Riffin'" and "Talkin' 'Bout Women Obviously," all making for a fresh, inviting and inspiring album. Stanley Turrentine's stellar 1964 album, In Memory Of, traversed swinging hard bop, beautiful balladry and African rhythms with the saxophonist fronting a tremendous sextet with Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Herbie Hancock (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass), and Otis "Candy" Finch (drums). Hammond B3 organist Baby Face Willette debuted his swinging sound on 3 consecutive Blue Note sessions in January 1961: Lou Donaldson's Here 'Tis, Grant Green's Grant's First Stand, and his own debut Face To Face. For his 2nd leader date, Stop And Listen, the organist convened a trio with Green on guitar and Ben Dixon on drums for a soul jazz symposium. For his last solo record 'Through a Room', Bill Nace shifted his usual saturated guitar sound and added tapes, hurdy gurdy, doughnut pipe, bird calls and the mysterious Japanese taishogoto. Setting up for the final night of his three day residency at OTO with only the taishogoto soundchecked, Nace hoped that Parker would arrive with his small soprano as it's opposite. "I've been interested in state change, you know, playing until there's a shift in time." Known for his development of multiphonics to produce a constantly shifting pattern, Evan Parker has evolved an instantly recognizable sound - his work the soprano most distinct. Happily, it was the soprano Evan brought with him and as soon as the two start to play they entwine - taking off in a double helix of keys and reed primed for endless reconfiguration. Space warps under the velocity of playing, the pitch rising unrelentingly. It felt like unending lift off in the room, sheer energy until the last note makes remember your feet have been on the floor the whole time. Total time bending shredding.

Oh Snap is the new album from the McArthur Fellow and 3-time Grammy winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Cecile McLorin Salvant. Oh Snap features twelve original songs by Salvant-plus one short "cover" of a verse from the Commodores' 1977 hit "Brick House"-mostly recorded outside of a traditional studio environment. The album features longtime musical collaborators Sullivan Fortner, Yasushi Nakamura, and Kyle Poole, as well as cameos from singers June McDoom and Kate Davis. The album is an eclectic mix of genres from indie to folk to jazz to experimental pop, all anchored by Salvant's otherworldly voice. Oh Snap shows that she will never be pigeonholed into one genre and proves, once again, that Salvant is one of the most daring and creative artists currently making music.

2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Nash Ensemble, and Hyperion is celebrating the occasion with a program of Debussy's Sonatas & Prelude ? l'apr's-midi d'un faune. Ike Quebec - "The Complete 45 Sessions (Blue Note Tone Poet Edition)". The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions of Ike Quebec collects a phenomenal body of work produced between 1959-62 by a key player in the Blue Note Story. The saxophonist had recorded for Blue Note and served as a talent scout in the 1940s before personal problems forced him off the scene. Alfred Lion began to reintroduce Quebec's music to jazz fans in 1959 with a series of 45 jukebox singles that were well received and revealed a formidable stylist very much at the top of his game with a full-throated, yet relaxed sound ideally suited to a range of material from ballads to blues. The date found the guitarist stretching out in a state-of-the-art sextet with Joe Henderson, James Spaulding, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw & Elvin Jones.
