Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were a major influential creative force in modern jazz for over three decades, with Blakey actively leading different incarnations of the band through to his death in 1990. They were legendary as representing the archetypal hard bop school of jazz, with a driving blues-flavoured approach. These performances came from early in the development of the Messengers soon after drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver had formed the group with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and bassist Doug Watkins, and these recordings were the first 'live' performances by this line-up to be recorded and released, and so represent something of a landmark. This set comprises the performances which were subsequently released on the Blue Note label. In addition, by way of a bonus, we also feature three studio tracks which this line-up had recorded at their first session together in November 1954, which were released by Blue Note as The Horace Silver Quintet. Including several extended performances where the full range of the group's skill and style can be fully appreciated, this is a great showcase for one of the most admired ensembles in modern jazz, capturing the modern jazz zeitgeist of those years.t.

In 1961, the group featured Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano) and Jymie Merrit (bass). Recorded in Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio, it's a brilliant set of six Shorter compositions, like the playful "Ping Pong" and the clever "United." It's among Blakey's finest.

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. 1958's Moanin' - featuring the great drummer w/ trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons, & bassist Jymie Merritt - was the perfect crystallization of the band's bluesy, soulful sound, & it still stands today as perhaps the most quintessential hard bop recording of all-time. The album also introduced several indelible Golson compositions that would become standards of the jazz songbook including "Along Came Betty" & "Blues March."

The legendary NYC jazz club Birdland was sacred ground for drummer Art Blakey who recorded 3 live albums for Blue Note at the venue between 1954-1960: A Night at Birdland, At the Jazz Corner of the World, and Meet You at the Jazz Corner of the World. This last date featured one of the greatest lineups of Blakey's powerhouse outfit The Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass.

Drummer Art Blakey recorded Indestructible-his final album for Blue Note-in 1964 with a powerful sextet line-up of The Jazz Messengers featuring Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). The LP presented five compelling original compositions by Fuller ("The Egyptian" & "Sortie"), Morgan ("Calling Miss Khadija"), Walton ("When Love Is New"), and Shorter ("Mr. Jin"), and was adorned with one of Reid Miles' most memorable album cover designs.

In the case of Art Blakey, the name "jazz legend" is wholly appropriate. Following Blakey's musical apprenticeship in the bands of Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie, the Jazz Messengers formed in 1955. They were pivotal in nurturing the hard edged bebop sound and the jazz greats of the future This unique DVD recorded in 1982 also includes a set by Johnny Griffin.

One of the great Jazz Messengers recordings, Blakey's 1962 debut for Riverside featured Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Reggie Workman, Freddie Hubbard and Cedar Walton...'nuff said! Two bonus tracks, too!

Vinyl LP repressing of this jazz classic. 1963's Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers' Ugetsu was recorded at the legendary Birdland club, when the New York post-bop era was still very much in progress. Featuring both a young Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, Ugetsu remains a reaffirmation of the belief that this kind of on-the-scene adventure can create some of the most effective recorded jazz. With Curtis Fuller, Hubbard, Shorter, Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman. The album marked Riverside's recording debut at the Birdland, one of the most famous and celebrated American jazz clubs. According to the liner notes, Orrin Keepnews, the producer, stated that "there were other performances taped that night that couldn't be fitted into the resulting album".

Live In Moers 1976

Art Blakey was one of the greatest of all jazz drummers, a masterful talent scout and the inspiring leader of the Jazz Messengers. For 35 years (1955-90), the Jazz Messengers featured brilliant young talent who were pushed by Blakey to write new music and play at their very best. Few lineups could compete with the 1960 edition of the Jazz Messengers featured on the album "The Big Beat". Blakey, the "old man" of the band at 30, is joined by bassist Jymie Merritt and three brilliant stylists who were not only exciting soloists but very skilled songwriters: trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The Big Beat introduces Timmons' "Dat Dere" (which practically defines soul jazz) and Shorter's "Lester Left Town" (a tribute to Lester Young) and includes an inventive version of "It's Only A Paper Moon" along with a few other lesser-known but colorful pieces. JAZZ MESSENGERS

It takes one to know one. Which is why jazz drummers have always been ready to join the queue when assessing Art Blakey's influence, not only in the field of percussion but in the shaping of his chosen genre. Max Roach described him as "An original - the only drummer whose time I recognise immediately. When I first met him on 52nd Street in 1944, he already had the polyrhythmic thing down. He was doing it before anybody else." Thelonious Monk Jr concurred: "When I became a drummer, I learned how to swing from Art Blakey. What he did with the hi-hat and his roll got pressed into my soul. He had a primal approach to drums." All of which warmed the ears of Blakey, who admitted that his aim was to be one of the greatest drummers in the world- an ambition which he undoubtedly achieved.

Recorded on August 7 and 14, 1960 this album is one of the most celebrated for the powerful solos and intricate arrangements, epitomizing the hard bop style. Blakey's versions of "A Night in Tunisia" are renowned for their intense energy and complexity, the piece itself features a distinctive Afro-Cuban rhythm in the introduction and the main theme, transitioning into straight-ahead swing for the improvisational sections. In the summer of 1980, the jazz world bore witness to an electrifying fusion of talent, rhythm, and soul as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band took the stages of two iconic European festivals: Montreux and North Sea. The Big Band performers, next to Art Blakey on drums, consisted of a stellar line-up with Bill Pierce, Bobby Watson, Valery Ponomarev, James Williams, Charles Fambrough, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Robin Eubanks, Kevin Eubanks and John Ramsey. For the Marsalis brothers, Wynton and Branford, and also Eubanks brothers Robin and Kevin these were their first ever recordings of them together. Tracks include "Minor Thesis", "A Wheel Within A Wheel", "Bit A Bittadose" and two more compositions serve as a testament to the power of improvisation.

This record presents the complete set and is produced as a three LP gatefold album with each vinyl one of three different colours: blue, white and red, representing the French flag.
