This Is For You, John is an album by saxophonist/composer Benny Golson, recorded at Vanguard Studio, New York City in 1983 and released the year after. For the recordings, Golson was accompanied by Pharoah Sanders on tenor sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. The album features tunes associated with, or inspired by the famous American Jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, including 'Times Past (This Is For You, John)'. 'Origin' is an original, composed by Pharoah Sanders. This Is For You, John is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on green colored vinyl. The back of the sleeve contains extensive liner notes by Benny Golson, reflecting meetings with John Coltrane and the inspirations behind the songs.

Benny Golson is an American bebop/hard bop jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He came to prominence with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie, more as a writer than a performer, before launching his solo career. Golson is known for co-founding and co-leading The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer in 1959. From the late 1960s through the 1970s Golson was in demand as an arranger for film and television and thus was less active as a performer, but he and Farmer re-formed the Jazztet in 1982.

Known primarily for his hard bop roots and classic compositions like "Whisper Not" and "Killer Joe," Golson steps into the realms of jazz-funk and disco with this release, reflecting the musical trends of the late 1970s. The title song is a stellar dance groove, holding heavyweight status among underground soul, funk, and jazz aficionados-a true 'rare groove' indeed. Produced by George Butler, whose credentials are no less than impressive, it's no wonder the instrumental hook of this title song has been sampled many times by artists such as Naughty by Nature, Logistics, Leona Lewis, and many others. Everything about this album-music, engineering, mastering-is top-notch, making this somewhat of an audiophile release as well. This is a real hidden gem and well worth seeking out!

Benny Golson - "Gone With Golson (Original Jazz Classics Series)". Gone With Golson was originally released in 1959 and is saxophonist Benny Golson's fifth album. A great example of the hard-bop genre, the album includes four Golson compositions, plus "Staccato Swing" by Ray Bryant, who plays on the album, and the jazz standard "Autumn Leaves." This new edition of the album is released as part of the Original Jazz Classics Series on 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI with all-analog mastering from the original tapes at Cohearent Audio and a Stoughton Tip-On Jacket.
