From a stunning single line of chant to the explosive polyphony of William Byrd and J.S. Bach, each of the works on this recording is in some way related to light’s presence in our life journey: from birth to death, through love, disappointment, forgiveness, and transcendence. The presented repertoire spans the mystical 12th-century chant of Hildegard von Bingen through the Renaissance and Baroque eras, plus two special 19th century works by composers who were deeply inspired by the ideas and musical styles of these earlier time periods. Westminster Kantorei has been honored as a national finalist for The American Prize, whose judges praised the ensemble’s “finely-measured and delicate balance of voices, and a mastery of stylistic performance practice.” It has performed at the Boston Early Music Festival, the American Handel Festival and the Reformation 500 Anniversary Concert as well as in England and France, where it performed at the Festival Musique en L’ile in Paris. The ensemble has also collaborated with the Westminster Choir to perform Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Kurt Masur.

This new release is the third volume in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra’s Grammy Award-winning Dutilleux cycle. Especially notable on this installment, is the inclusion of a live performance of Dutilleux’s masterpiece “Timbres, espace, mouvement.” German-born violinist Augustin Hadelich is featured on this recording of “Sur le meme accord.” He performs on the 1723 Kiesewetter Stradivarius violin, provided by the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

In honor of what would have been Henri Dutilleux’s one-hundredth birthday, this commemorative box set is being released by The Seattle Symphony. This three-volume series is a critically acclaimed overview of all of Dutilleux’s major works for orchestra. This is an essential collector’s item for any lover of 20th century French music. The individual releases included in this box set have been nominated for a number of honors, included Grammy Award nominations for Best Orchestral Performance, Best Engineered Album, Classical, and received the Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo by Augustin Hadelich.

REVIEW:

The defining recording project of Ludovic Morlot’s tenure as music director in Seattle, this luscious three-disc set is a compendium of the orchestral canvases of Henri Dutilleux, whose centenary has been celebrated this year. It’s all played with considerable refinement, but there are particularly special results when the poised violinist Augustin Hadelich joins in for “L’arbre des songes” and “Sur le même accord.”

•This sixth Naxos album, Out of Darkness, from Music of Remembrance devoted to remembering Holocaust musicians and their art through recordings and commissions of new works, is a moving musical witness to survival in the face of unimaginable adversity.

The expressive range and versatility of the wind ensemble is exemplified in this program from one of the world's leading ensembles of it's kind, which presents classics of the genre alongside new works. Wayne Oquin's Tower Ascending pulsates with urban power whilst Richard Lorenz explores a web of Latin American music. Michael Tilson Thomas distils old and new perspectives and James Mobberely offers affecting Words of Love. We also hear Copland's indelible Fanfare for the Common Man, Vaughan Williams's intricate Toccata Marziale and Stravinsky's brilliantly virtuosic Concerto.

A versatile trumpeter able to navigate in both the Jazz and Latin music fields, Grammy Award winner Brian Lynch returns to the Criss Cross fold with ConClave Volume 2, a tour-de-force for his revamped Spheres of Influence ensemble. Up-and-comers Yosvany Terry on alto, Manuel Valera on piano, with bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Justin Brown, and percussionist Pedro Martinez make the scene for a diverse set of mainly Lynch originals. Mixing the Afro-Cuban beat with touches of samba and funk, Lynch comes up with his best concoction to date of spicy Latin sounds.

Nurtured on bebop during long tenures with Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Phil Woods, trumpeter Brian Lynch has learned Latin music from the inside-out during two decades with Eddie Palmieri. Here Lynch and a state-of-the-art ensemble (Criss Cross veteran Ralph Bowen on tenor sax; Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdomo, piano; Russian bassist Boris Kozlov; Cubans Ernesto Simpson on trap drums and Roberto Quintero, percussion) perform 7 Lynch originals that blend the leader's ultra-sophisticated harmonic language with idiomatic Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and the standard "Invitation."
