Recorded on September 1, 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder's home studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, and released in March 1958, "Sonny's Crib" is a jazz album released by Sonny Clark when he was just 25 years old. He had moved from Pittsburgh to the West Coast and then New York in the early to mid-1950s and he immersed himself in bebop and when he'll give his personal touch to the sounds emerging from the birthplace of hard bop. Albums from this period often featured "dream teams" of musicians and "Sonny's Crib" is a prime example. It's his second album as a leader (after "Dial "S" for Sonny") and the band it's notable because it features a fantastic lineup musicians as Sonny Clark himself, Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor and John Coltrane (in his pre-Blue Train period which was recorded just a few weeks later in 1957). The performance it's phenomenal, a true result of hard bop with some blues and modal elements: on "Sonny's Crib" Sonny Clark is real at the heart of the action. A recording that open the door to hard bop a must-have in the ideal jazz discography that show Clark become one of the best jazz piano talents of that period.

One of jazz music's most heralded traditions is breathing new life into older material. Reimagining standards and well-known songs provides impetus and backbone for ensemble connection and creative improvisation. Saxophonist Michael Zilber and drummer Mike Clark utilize their understanding and mastery of the jazz canon and popular songs on their new recording, Standard Deviation, a recording seemingly familiar yet new. Clark has provided pulse to innumerable influential rhythm sections over his long and varied career. The drummer's association with Zilber has blossomed over the last decade, focusing mainly on their love for New York City's hard swinging jazz tradition. Though both originally hail from the West Coast, Clark from the Bay Area and Zilber from Vancouver, Canada, the musicians found their musical home with the driving sounds of New York hard bop via groups like those of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The musicians are separated by a continent, as Zilber lives in Los Angeles and Clark in New York City. But when they get together, they make their reunions count. The two recorded their first album, Mike Drop (Sunnyside, 2021), after their quartet's first West Coast tour in 2018. In the Fall of 2022, Clark and Zilber performed a very successful concert of new material at the Monterey Jazz Festival, where they were joined by up-and-coming New York bassist Alexander Claffy. Shortly thereafter, Zilber headed to New York City, where he and Clark rehearsed and recorded Zilber's fresh, new arrangements. Recording Standard Deviation with a New York band was important to Zilber and Clark, as they wanted musicians who understood that distinctive approach, namely, to remain loose, swing hard, and be in the moment. For the recording, the duo brought in the aforementioned Claffy along with stalwart pianist Jon Davis, a seasoned veteran of the New York scene who had already played some of the material with Zilber and Clark. A fair portion of the material Zilber and Clark have performed together have been standards. For their Monterey appearance and new recording, Zilber and Clark wanted to feature Zilber's arrangements that present a fresh spin on familiar material, reimagining the original songs. For that, Zilber used melodies from well-known tunes while completely overhauling the song structures, from changes in harmonies, meters, form, and feel. These changes make the songs exciting and challenging vehicles for the quartet and listeners alike. For jazz musicians, sometimes the best way to express something new is by reimagining something old. Mike Clark and Michael Zilber take pieces with recognizable themes and uniquely reimagine them on Standard Deviations. The results provide their quartet with fantastic pieces to highlight the group's commitment to listening, interplay, and, most important, swing.

The supremely swinging pianist Sonny Clark hit the Blue Note scene in 1957 with a burst of creativity, first appearing as a sideman on the excellent Hank Mobley session and quickly returning to Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio to record three albums as a leader over the next three months: his debut Dial 'S' for Sonny, Sonny's Crib featuring John Coltrane, and the sublime Sonny Clark Trio featuring bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. - Presented without horns for the first time, the six-song set of bebop themes and standards puts the emphasis on Clark's pianism. The album opens with a blistering take of Dizzy Gillespie's tune "Be-Bop" that demonstrates Clark's dexterity before downshifting into a medium tempo swing through Rogers and Hart's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Two more bop themes follow with excellent renditions of Gillespie and John Lewis' "Two Bass Hit" and "Tadd's Delight" by Tadd Dameron. Clark's profound lyricism and inventive lines are evident on an excellent version of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" and the album closes with an exquisite solo performance of "I'll Remember April."

Sonny Clark is one of the long list of fine jazz musicians who died too young. He died at age 31. This album from 1957 excellently captures what was the definition of jazz at that time, and this became one of the best jazz albums of all time. Sonny Clark's playing on this album has the sound of beautiful perfection, and (along with the great work of Paul Chambers on bass and 'Philly' Joe Jones on drums) the playing really swings. Sonny shines on "Tadd's Delight" and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" with the crisp support from Chambers and 'Philly' Joe. He takes on the challenge of 'Be-bop', a very difficult tune, and pulls it off with his typical Sonny Clark touch.

Vinyl LP pressing. Other than Elvis, Carl, and Gene Vincent, not many rockabillies could claim a genuine national hit during the genre's mid-'50s heyday-but Sanford Clark could. His low-key vocal on The Fool, supplied by Clark's Phoenix, Arizona-based producer Lee Hazlewood, gave the deadpan lament precisely the feel that it required, Al Casey's blistering lead guitar adding it's snarling rockabilly edge. Once Dot Records picked up the master and it's Elvis-like flip Lonesome For A Letter for national consumption and it hit big in 1956, Sanford found himself a sudden star, touring with Perkins and Vincent and churning out more rocking product for Dot. The Fool put Lee on the map as a producer, well before he masterminded the rise of Duane Eddy. Bear Family's 'Sanford Clark Rocks' surveys the very best of Sanford's Dot output-Usta Be My Baby, A Cheat (both the original Dot release and the snare drum overdub version), Ooo Baby, Love Charms, Lou Be Doo, an unissued-at-the-time Cross-Eyed Alley Cat. The music of Herbie Hancock has affected the lives of generations of jazz performers. Like many of these musicians, it was the opportunity to play with the great pianist/composer that introduced the great drummer Mike Clark to the jazz world at large. To show his appreciation, Clark presents a selection of his favorite Hancock pieces performed with a trio on his new recording, Mike Clark Plays Herbie Hancock. Mike Clark in the late 1960s regularly played post-bop gigs with Woody Shaw and Bobby Hutcherson, but it was the funky organ gigs with his friend, bassist Paul Jackson, that really cemented Clark's standing on the scene. At the time, Hancock's ground-breaking, electric Mwandishi ensemble broke up due to financial constraints. Hancock began to regroup a smaller, funkier ensemble and hired Jackson. Hancock initially had Harvey Mason for the drum chair, but his work constraints wouldn't allow him to join. Jackson recommended Clark for the group and the Headhunters were born.

Color Changes is considered by many to be one of the finest albums by trumpeter and pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, Clark Terry. Rather than have the usual jam session with the stellar sidemen he'd assembled, Terry utilized specific arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn for the date. The result is an album which ranges through many moods and many textures, which is why the album was titled, Color Changes.

Art Farmer for example is melodic and tuneful on Cool Struttin', helped by Sonny's sympathetic yet urgent chordal backing. The same applies to Jackie McLean, a loyal devotee of Charlie Parker but blessed with his own style. The pianist's solos have finger bustin' moments when the keys seem melded into one homogenous mass. But Sonny also displayed his expertise as a tasteful stylist with a unique approach much admired by Bill Evans. The musicians assembled for this session were produced by Blue Note Records supremo Alfred Lion, and would have been familiar to Clark, on this occasion cast in the role of Leader. Sonny was one of the Jazz label's house pianists called on to back the likes of John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell and Hank Mobley.
