Rich Brown bought his first six-string bass in 1999, "Everyone made fun of me" he recalls with a characteristically warm smile - since then he's established a reputation as first-call player for the leaders of an impressive variety of adventurous projects, from Steve Coleman to Rudresh Mahanthappa to James 'Blood' Ulmer. Over the past two years, whenever time allows, he's been paying regular visits to the studio of his friend, the guitarist and producer Elmer Ferrer. Away from the pressures of the commercial industry, Rich seized the opportunity to explore and expand the vocabulary of his instrument. 'NYAEBA' took shape: written and performed entirely on the bass guitar. Rich drew inspiration from the many remarkable musicians he's supported as a bassist, or encountered in the richly multicultural music scene in his adopted hometown of Toronto. Throughout the album, the commitment to melody and story ensures that the technique, though prodigious, never overshadows the tale. Each tune was built up with multiple tracks in the studio, with no looping or sequencing involved. The sonic versatility on display is astounding, but the album retains the organic, intimate feel of a performance. This album will no doubt sit comfortably among the essential solo bass albums, showcasing what's possible on the instrument. While many solo bass records center the instrument itself, what's unique about Rich's approach is that he puts the composition and music first, using the electric bass as the vehicle. With a focus on texture, movement and melody, and a striking range of voices, this is not your average electric bass album. A1. Ukudlala A2. The Sum of Our Tears A3. Heart of a Lonely Woman A4. Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Zoot Sims, George Duvivier - Transition / A mixed bag of work from Buddy and Hamp - part straight jazz, and part sweet electric funk! The first two-thirds of the album features Rich and Hampton with Terry Wilson on piano, Zoot Sims on tenor, and George Duvivier on bass - grooving hard in that open-ended way of some of Hampton's small group dates for Verve from the early 50s, on titles that include "Avalon", "Ring Dem Bells", "Ham Hock Blues", and "Air Mail Special". The last third of the album features a larger group - still with Rich and Hampton, but also with some keyboards from Kenny Barron, plus tenor by Sal Nistico and guitar from Jack Wilson. The vibe on these tracks is a bit more 70s-styled - with some of the soaring electric modes you might expect from Groove Merchant! Titles include "EG" and "Fum" - both great funky numbers!

“trioTrio”? - Yes, unfamiliar ensemble name and it needs introduction. nNew York’s elite instrumentalists of the younger generation, Jacob Sacks (piano), Dave Ambrosio (bass) and Vinnie Sperrazza (drums) are the components of this cooperative trio. They have been playing together since around 2000. Here this their first album features two of their most respected soloists, Dave Scott (tp) and Rich Perry (ts) both of who have been playing with trioTrio also since around 2000 at the private sessions Dave Scott hosts.
“Nice treatment” is the favoured phrase Dave Scott uses when the music come together. To quote Sperrazza who is the author of the liner notes, Dave and Rich are the “under-sung giants of jazz”.
This soundtrack for the film Samurai Marathon, directed by Bernard Rose, is comprised of excerpts of Philip Glass works. Including music from Mishima, Symphonies Nos. 2, 3 and 8, Naqoyqatsi and his operas Akhnaten and Satyagraha, these new recordings are performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Richard Hein.
On his 25th release on SteepleChase saxophonist Rich Perry takes on the role of composer as well for all the titles presented here. Although Rich readily confides that composing is not one of his favorite activities, we all realize the music on this disc reveals Perry’s deep creative reservoir.
“… Probably Perry’s most passionate fans are other tenor saxophone players. Those who have spent their lives studying the instrument understand that the purity of Perry’s minimalism is a rare quality to which they themselves aspire … Perry’s solo is a rapt, intimate flowing. He does not sound like he is inventing but like he is reliving deep private memories.” (Tom Conrad – NYC Jazz Records on SCCD 31176 “Nocturne”

Import. Remaster album of live performance at the famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 Brooklyn, New York - April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. A consummate player, Rich's prowess ranged from light-as-a-feather sensitivity behind piano trios to a G-force sound in big bands. But it was the latter ensembles that won him recognition. Rich began his big band work with Joe Marsala in 1937, followed by gigs with Bunny Berigan, Harry James, Artie Shaw and Benny Carter. In 1939, he joined Tommy Dorsey's band, where he cemented his reputation as a big band artist and roomed with singer Frank Sinatra. This famed musician received outstanding recognition throughout his career. The Downbeat Magazine Hall of Fame Award, the Modern Drummer Magazine Hall of Fame Award and the Jazz Unlimited Immortals of Jazz Award are just a few of his numerous honors. Rich gained international attention for such master compositions as his 10-minute West Side Story medley. BGO Records. UK. 2008.
On March 3, 1978, Buddy Rich took one of the best bands he ever had (he called them the Killer Force) to a gig at a Sacramento high school. What was captured will make jazz fans flip: no producers, no set lists just electrifying jazz the way Buddy felt like playing it that night: Grand Concourse; Slow Funk; West Side Story Suite; Someday My Prince Will Come, and more!
I remember the Great Unus of Ringling Brothers Circus placing a round glove on top of his upright cane-then proceeding to balance himself by standing on his forefinger. Of course that's the answer-it can't be done. Like the Great Unus, is this some kind of magician's trick Mr. Rich is putting on us? - that we really don't hear or see what we think we do? I recall standing with Shelly Manne and Bobby Rosengarden at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1978. We stood to the right side of the bandstand so Shelly and Bobby could watch Buddy's right foot! Just his right foot! After the set, they looked at each other in disbelief. It was obviously an illusion they had seen. During a Rich engagement in Los Angeles some years ago, twenty-two drummers were in the audience. At the conclusion of the "Channel One Suite" half of them were openly crying. One should not try to explain the magician's trick-once you know the modus of operandi, the thrill is gone. So keep your secrets, Buddy Rich, and let the audience forever be amazed and in wonderment of your art. The Great Unus may have retired, but Traps, the Drum Wonder makes US all believers. - Johnny Carson Includes: Machine, Best Coast, One O'Clock Jump, Sophisticated Lady, Norwegian Wood, Love for Sale, No Exit, Channel One Suite.
Few musicians face the challenges of contemporary music as thoroughly as multi-reedist/composer Rich Corpolongo. Drawing on such disparate influences as Charlie Parker and Karlheinz Stockhausen, the music on Smiles maps a vast stylistic terrain. (Previously deleted:7/1/07. Original release date:5/25/96)
One of the most talented jazz sidemen in Chicago, Rich Corpolongo stepped forward in 1995 to make his debut recording as leader, Just Found Joy. The multi-reedist (alto and soprano sax and clarinet) displays a complete musical virtuosity and creative focus on eight original compositions. "a marvelous showcase for his writing and improvising talents... he rips through the constraints of bar lines and conventional propriety with controlled abandon. He'll push up to the boundaries of free jazz, but never stray from the structure of the song." - Art Lange "a sleeper hit, and a wake-up call about a brand-new longtime talent" - Jazziz. "*4 Stars*" - Down Beat.
