Canadian violin virtuoso Steven Staryk began his musical education at the age of 7 at the Harbord Collegiate Institute. He went on to study with Albert Pratz at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and then in New York City. He is considered to be the leading Canadian-born violinist of his generation. In addition to being listen in The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, he also has won the Shevchenko Medal, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, an honorary doctorate of letters from Toronto’s York University, and arts awards from the Canada Council. He has also been a master teacher, and has taught at the Vancouver Academy of Music, the University of Vitoria, the University of Ottawa, the University of Western Ontario, The Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto, and the University of Toronto. Composer Matthew H. Fields allies himself with the broad banner of classical music. With each work he strives to push himself in new directions, incorporating flavors of America and Europe as well as his native Jewish and other cultures into a mixture freely admitting tonality and atonality, the modern and the ancient, the intellectual and the passionate. Centaur’s new release features Mr. Field’s Double Cluster, played by pianist Gloria Chuang, and the expansive, four-movement, astronomically influenced Space Sciences, played by the Moravian Symphony led by Jan Kučera.

Founded 1992, the Apollo Ensemble of Amsterdam, under its artistic leader David Rabinovich, has emerged as one of Europe’s leading authentic period instrument Baroque chamber music groups. + Built around a core of key players, the Ensemble expands as needed, even to orchestral size when necessary, and has developed an outstanding reputation for its recovery and reinterpretation of Baroque Jewish music. + This Centaur release features the Ensemble and harpsichordist Marion Boshuizen in three of Bach’s Sonatas for violin and harpsichord, including the alternate version of Sonata VI.

The recording features a program of contemporary works by women composers for saxophone. Bill Perconti is a virtuoso saxophonist. The accompaniment includes piano and guitar.

This notable release of contemporary viola music features the work of five American women composers. +Dr. Hsiaopei Lee has been Principal Viola in the Meridian Symphony since 2005, when she joined the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi. +This is her first CD. +Dr. Chia-Ling Hsieh is the faculty accompanist and coordinator for the accompanying area at Morehead State University, where she also teaches class piano. +Both performers are active recitalists in the U.S. and abroad.

The series, the first of its kind to occur on American soil since 1971, may be approaching its conclusion, but the plaudits keep coming in for the Mendelssohn Piano Trio’s multi-volume Joseph Haydn complete Piano Trio series, now at its fifth volume with this release.
