This autumn, Erased Tapes are set to release 'Give It to the Sky: Arthur Russell's Tower of Meaning Expanded' by composer and producer Peter Broderick and French 12-piece group Ensemble 0; a complete re-recording of Russell's epic minimalist orchestral composition originally released in 1983. Released 6th October, 'Give It to the Sky' also includes unreleased tracks by Russell which have been restored and re-recorded, resulting in an 80-minute reanimation that threads several lost songs into a meticulous and gorgeous rendering. Ensemble 0 weave in and out of Broderick's additions. 'Corky', a poignant cowboy ballad that Russell never finished, appears, disappears, and reappears three times, the droning exhalations of 'Tower of Meaning' making it feel sweeter and sadder. Arriving just after the triumphant halfway mark, the title track is a sublime meditation on mere existence, about staring at some simple rural scene and marcelling at the miracle of being anywhere at all. It is an apt encapsulation of how this entire project feels - a glorious way to hear something that might have seemed familiar as if for the very first time. Russell was never much for definitive versions, of course. He was constantly rethinking the possibilities of a piece, of wondering what else it could do. 'Give it to the Sky' is a powerful affirmation of those principles, using Tower of Meaning's framework to build outward and upward, to shape something that functions within Russell's wondrous, paradoxical world. And 'Give it to the Sky' is also not intended to be some definitive last word. Broderick and Ensemble 0 speak already of the ways it may shift on stage, of where else it might lead. 1. John's playing, combined with the Locrian Ensemble of London, was an incredible event. On their transformative debut album Nakshatra, violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy reach both deep into their past and high into the celestial realm, culminating in a lush and spiritual collaboration that bridges traditions and defies genres. A Sanskrit word evocative of constellations, stars, and interconnectedness, nakshatra perfectly encapsulates the album's expansive sound, which quite surprisingly, is made by just two violins vibrating together in sublime harmony. Profoundly intimate yet bearing a cinematic gravitas, this work five years in the making conveys a feeling of two souls in conversation spanning hundreds of years into the past and the future. Basu (Karavika) and Ramamurthy (Arun Ramamurthy Trio) are deeply rooted in traditions of South Indian classical music, Western chamber music, and jazz, uniquely positioning them to create a sound that feels ancient, orchestral, and contemporary or as The New Yorker put it, "free-flowing and globe-spanning." Through the duo's grounding in tradition paired with their fluency in improvisation, the compositions on Nakshatra have a clear architecture, which allows space for their two violins to be deliciously indiscernible while shining individually. Basu says of the duo's collaboration, "Our hope for our music is to be a meeting point for the tradition of South Indian classical music-raga music-that Arun comes from and Western classical music and creative improvisation that I come from, and bring these pieces together in a way that creates a sound that reflects who we are, a sound that reflects our multicultural background, and our experiences in this world." Nigel Kennedy's recording was released on 25th September 1989 and went on to become one of the best-selling classical albums of all-time, selling over three million copies around the world. Originally recorded in November 1986 in the Church of St John-at-Hackney, London, it was a recording that would achieve unprecedented public and media attention and change the course of music history. Vivaldi's work, 12 movements in short three-minute bursts, was tailor-made for commercial radio. It was the first time that commercial pop marketing techniques had been used in the classical world and the first time that Nigel was unleashed on the media. It was a phenomenon waiting to happen. Nigel Kennedy's recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons sold over three million copies around the world. It topped the UK classical chart for over a year and entered the Guinness Book of Records as the bestselling classical recording ever. In 1989, the classical music industry came to terms with life after Herbert von Karajan. His death on 16 July marked the passing from the world of maestros to that of megastars. Pundits had predicted a classical music boom, courtesy of the new digital sound carrier, the compact disc, but no one could foresee a world in which Three Tenors, glamorous violinists and Welsh mezzo-sopranos would dominate the pop charts. And then there was Nigel Kennedy, a pupil of the Yehudi Menuhin School whose star was about to rise. He left the hothouse environment at Stoke d'Abernon with his individuality intact and came to the notice of Simon Foster, the A&R manager at EMI's budget classical label, Classics for Pleasure. It was Foster who championed Nigel's recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto, made at a fortnight's notice in 1984. Gramophone magazine gave it the 'Record of the Year' Award, and it received a gong from the early years of the Brit Awards for 'Best Classical Recording'. On 24 April 1986, Kennedy stepped up from the mid-price Eminence label to sign an exclusive contract with EMI Records UK, albeit in the face of some scepticism from the internal International Classical Division. It was suggested by one senior executive that no one called Nigel would ever make it. 'What? Like Adrian?' came the reply from another executive, and the objection was not raised again. The Wogan Show and other TV appearances introduced Nigel to a wider audience. Six months later, Nigel began recording this CD. Wider fame arrived with a concert in aid of The Prince's Trust in July 1989 attended by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Nigel played the last movement of 'Summer' with the CBSO conducted by Sir George Martin, one-time producer to The Beatles. After the concert, the BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Nightingale introduced Nigel to the attending Royals and asked if Nigel should teach the violin to William and Harry. Diana smiled. 'I wouldn't let you within a million miles of them.' Nigel, unperturbed, replied: 'Shocking, your Royal Monstrette.'

Fans of the Berlin based Nils Frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join Frahm on stage - the likes of Rachel Grimes, Rob Lowe of Balmorhea as well as label colleagues Peter Broderick and Olafur Arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. It will come as no surprise then that Nils Frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to Erased Tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow Berliner Anne Muller to produce 7fingers. With their first collective release Frahm and Muller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an 'intoxicating and delicious' collection of songs. Primarily a pianist Nils Frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase Muller on cello. Anne Muller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the Wolf-Ferrari-Ensemble, Phillip Boa and recent tours with Agnes Obel, proves an amp musical partner for Frahm. As the recognition continues to grow for Nils Frahm's previous solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells, 2011 sees a new side to this young talent as he embarks on a detour into strings, symphonies and glitch beats alongside the estimable Anne Muller. 1. Bruckner's E Minor Mass and a selection of his profoundly beautiful motets were selected by Sir Stephen Cleobury as his last album at King's, recorded only a few months before his death. Perhaps the deepest and most spiritual of Bruckner's masses, the 'Mass in E minor' is unusual in it's scoring for choir, wind and brass. It is recorded here by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in King's College Chapel. The album is accompanied by a specially-commissioned Appreciation for Sir Stephen, written by Professor Iain Fenlon, as well as Shades of the Past in Bruckner's Sacred Music - another commissioned essay on Bruckner's works by Dr. Martin Ennis.
