She has never lost her place among the top-selling classical artists. Warner Classics re-releases one of Maria Callas' legendary studio recitals on vinyl, using state of the art remastering done in 2014. This recital brings together three operas from the earlier years of Verdi's career (Nabucco, ErnaniandMacBeth) and one of his greatest mature masterpieces (Don Carlo). Callas sang all of them on stage apart from Ernani, and Lady MacBeth proved a triumph for her when she opened La Scala's season in December 1952. Gramophone greeted this recital by saying: 'Mme Callas has seldom had such a field day and her dramatic instinct is well-nigh perfect in interpreting these wonderful pages, each characterized convincingly - and differently. John Barbirolli, an intense and inspired interpreter of Beethoven's music, had been conducting the Eroica for many years, but the symphony acquired a special significance for him in the final years of his life. "Strange how the Eroica exhausts me these days," he wrote in 1966. "It may well be because I am really beginning to plumb it's depths."

For their latest album on Warner Classics, the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Jacek Kaspszyk join forces with the outstanding young Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, winner of the Second Prize in the 2016 International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. This exciting collaboration marks Miss Kim's recording debut, in which the fiendish virtuosity of Wieniawski's Romantic Violin Concerto No. 2 is coupled with Shostakovich's searingly intense Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. Although nearly 100 years apart, both concertos presented on this album had their premieres in Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg is also the city in which Henryk Wieniawski held the post of soloist at the Tsar's court, as well as the birthplace of Dmitri Shostakovich and where he spent most of his life.

This recording is the very first made by the Orchestre de Paris, made between October 23rd and 26th 1967, three weeks before the inaugural concert at the Th��tre des Champs-Elys�es on November 14th 1967, with the same Symphonie fantastique among other works by Debussy and Stravinsky.

SERGEI PROKOFIEV 1891-1953 The 9 Piano Sonatas Toccata � 9 Pieces from "Cinderella" Vladimir Ovchinnikov piano STEREO � RECORDED IN 1992-1993 Sergei Prokofiev was himself a fine pianist and his nine piano sonatas span his entire composing career. Richly varied in scale, style and expression, they have only rarely been recorded complete. In 1988, when Vladimir Ovchinnikov, top prizewinner of both the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition and the Leeds International Piano Competition, played the 2nd and 7th sonatas at his US debut, the New York Times praised his ability to "keep the rhythms sharp while creating textures with an acerbic edge and great tensile strength," and wrote that "even in the densest, loudest passages, his playing has an uncanny sense of transparency."

Maria Callas TITLE: Verdi: Rigoletto (Mexico, 17/06/1952)(2CD) Callas only sang Gilda in Rigolettotwice on stage, in Mexico City in 1952, and this recording was taken from the first of those performances. She brought tonal substance and deep interpretative insight to a role that had sometimes been treated by light-voiced sopranos as an opportunity for coloratura display. Gilda's father, Rigoletto himself, is sung by Piero Campolonghi, an Italian baritone closely associated with the role, while Giuseppe di Stefano, is the dashing, but unscrupulous Duke of Mantua. He partnered Callas frequently during her career - on stage, in the recording studio and on a final concert tour of Europe, North America and Japan in 1974.

Maria Callas - Donizetti: Anna Bolena (Milano, 14/04/1957)(2CD) Callas's Anna Bolena at La Scala in 1957 was one of the absolute highlights of her extraordinary career. The performances brought new life toabel cantoopera that had long fallen out of favour. The central role was ideally suited tohertalents andsheonce again hadLuchino Viscontias her director. Anna's rival, Giovanna Seymour, was sung by one Callas's mosttrusted colleagues, thesuperbmezzo-soprano Giulietta Simionato. Maria Callas - Wagner: Parsifal (Roma, 20-21/11/1950)(2CD) In her early years as a dramatic soprano, Callas sang three Wagner roles: Isolde, Br�nnhilde (Die Walk�re) and Kundry inParsifal. This performance of Wagner's final opera, recorded for Italian state radio late in 1950, became her farewell to the composer. Although only 26 at the time, she showed a deep understanding of the complex and tortured character of Kundry, a mythical woman who is hundreds of years old. The previous year, while singing Isolde in Venice, Callas had been encouraged by the conductor Tullio Serafin to take on the coloratura role of Elvira inI puritaniat very short notice; it set a new and decisive direction for her career.
