Digipak. Rooted in the Qubec landscape and inspired by the vastness of the St. Lawrence River, Flore Laurentienne's music- a harmonious blend of strings and analog synthesizers-takes us on a journey to the edge of the sublime, where we find ourselves both fragile and powerful, suspended between vulnerability and wonder. On stage, Laurentienne comes to life through a core ensemble of seven musicians. At the center stands composer and keyboardist Mathieu David Gagnon, surrounded by a string quartet and two keyboardists-percussionists. Over the past five years, they have developed a rich shared experience of live performance, a natural rapport and an instinctive bond that nourish both the project and the composer's work. The power of the MiniMoog, the ensemble's emblematic instrument, combined with the richness of the strings, creates a captivating interplay that draws the listener into a unique and memorable experience. On Volume III, Mathieu David Gagnon and his Flore Laurentienne return to celebrate the magnificence of the river and it's floral and sylvan surroundings. It's an album to be enjoyed alongside it's two predecessors (Volume I and II), while also looking forward to the next step. Flore Laurentienne is constantly evolving, but from the beginning, the vision has remained the same: to create music that is alive, true, human, and uncompromising.

Collected Works and War of the Martian Ghosts is the definitive recorded collection of living Chicago DIY legend, Dr. Charles Joseph Smith. It also marks the first archival release from Chicago's Sooper Records. All of the music here is being made widely available for the first time ever. This 90-minute collection is compiled from 30 years of Charles' self-released music spanning concert piano, electroacoustic experimentation, electronic beats, free improvisation, and two instrumental realizations of his evolving sci-fi opera, War of the Martian Ghosts (a 2023 electronic realization, and a 2018 piano realization). This double Vinyl / Triple CD Collector's Edition includes an extensive liner note booklet containing 9000 words about the artist's life and work, as well as poetry, interviews, quotes, and 30 archival photographs. Liner notes written by Sooper co-founder Glenn Curran and edited by Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz. Dr. Charles Joseph Smith's remarkable story begins with a mute child's gift for music, and the purposeful way he nurtured this talent to become both life practice and raison d'tre. Charles recounts this artistic journey in his autobiography, The 88 Keys that Opened Doors, a self-published book that chronicles a life in which music was (and still is) the primary key to overcoming immense challenges posed by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). His career as a musician starts in the church, reaches into the international concert piano circuit, and eventually settles to bear strange fruit in Chicago's experimental underground. Along the way, Charles Joseph Smith's compositional voice absorbed and metabolized popular music spanning pop to jazz, the gospel of the church, the canon of the classical conservatory, modern dance scores, and the rule-shattering experimentalism of his city's DIY subculture, where he has been a mainstay for over 30 years. Since the mid-1990s, Charles has been performing, dancing, and selling his self-published musical and written works in person, often at the local shows he frequents. He is known around Chicago as a living symbol of the power of music, and of the beloved spirit of community at the heart of DIY. This is the definitive collection of his original recordings-though it would be impossible to ever encompass the galaxies of music, poetry, and prose penned by the prolific Dr. Charles Joseph Smith.

John McGuire's Double String Trios presents three major late works for two string trios, composed between 2012 and 2021. His musical roots lie in the electronic studios of postwar Cologne, shaped through studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Krzysztof Penderecki, and grounded in the traditions of European serialism. Working with synthesizers capable of generating up to 1,800 pulses per second, McGuire developed a beautifully harmonious, crystalline music, shaped by the ear into a world of flowing continuities between one point and the next. Transferred to stringed instruments, that world becomes infinitely more complex-suffused with the richness and impurities of human players and their acoustic technologies. Conceived as two facing string trios in antiphonal dialogue, the music links studio spatial thinking with older split-ensemble traditions, unfolding through Fibonacci proportions, rotating tempi, shifting meters, and continual harmonic transposition.

Mar 06, 2026
Celebrating the 90th birthday of Helmut Lachenmann, one of the most visionary composers of our time, this landmark release brings together for the first time the complete solo piano works in a single edition. Pianist Jonas Olsson, long associated with Lachenmann's music, offers an authoritative and deeply insightful interpretation that captures the full range of the composer's radical, tactile sound world-music that redefines what the piano can express. Produced by pianist and composer Miharu Ogura, the recording stands as a new reference for Lachenmann's piano music. The accompanying bilingual booklet features illuminating notes by Paul Griffiths, a selection of Lachenmann's own diagrams, and a substantial interview in German between the composer and Olsson, providing an invaluable glimpse into his creative mind. Since his studies with Hans Plsson in Gothenburg and Pierre-Laurent Aimard in Cologne, Jonas Olsson has built an international career as a champion of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire. He has performed at major festivals including Lucerne-appearing as soloist in Boulez's Rpons and Sur Incises under the composer's direction-as well as in Des canyons aux toiles by Messiaen. His performances of Boulez's complete piano sonatas at the 2015 Klang Festival and his 2016 Aldeburgh portrait concert of Rebecca Saunders further attest to his rare commitment and precision. Helmut Lachenmann (b. 1935, Stuttgart) studied with Luigi Nono and has influenced generations through his teaching and writings. His groundbreaking approach to instrumental sound has earned him many of the world's highest musical honors, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and the Leone d'Oro of the Venice Biennale. Released to coincide with Lachenmann's 90th birthday, this album is both a tribute and a milestone-a definitive portrait of a composer who continues to expand the very idea of music.

AFTERLIFE REQUIEM

Mar 06, 2026
Post-classical composer, sound artist, and curator Matthew Patton returns with his second album as Those Who Walk Away. Afterlife Requiem is an elegy to friend and collaborator Jhann Jhannsson. Drone, electroacoustics, and near-silences extracted from unfinished recordings on Jhannsson hard drives, underpin two string quintets-Ghost Orchestra (Reykjavk) and Possible Orchestra (Winnipeg)-processed and erased in a doleful durational work. Patton also works again with Andy Rudolph (Guy Maddin) and Paul Corley (Sigur Rs, Ben Frost) on co-production and sound design, to forge a simmering physicality that juxtaposes roiling low-end with haunting movements of ghostly strings. Everything I have ever written is a Requiem. Everything an ending. Death is smeared all over this music. My work is about disappearance-of the present, the past, of everything. Afterlife Requiem gets slower and slower over it's duration, it is one huge ritardando, time is not just slowing down-it is disappearing. Without even thinking, two related tragedies occurred and came to the surface organically while I was writing, recording, and working: the death of my mother and the death of composer and friend Jhann Jhannsson. When I start writing, I am not thinking of anything in particular, I am just writing, composing, recording, and listening... but something always makes itself apparent or pushes itself through in an unforeseen way. After my mother's medically-assisted death, in clearing out her apartment, I realized that I was also erasing the physical manifestation of her world-and that I was doing the exact same thing with the music I was writing and recording. During this time, Jhann's death also kept making itself apparent. For Afterlife Requiem I have taken short abandoned fragments from Jhann Jhannsson's hard drives and placed these disembodied audio ghosts in alternating sections within my own music, leaving them impure-and in the process blurring the distinction between making and un-making. After his death, I had been given these hard drives from Jhannsson's Berlin studio to listen to. This music was abandoned, in various states of formation and dissolution: an index of decayed and dead memories, forgotten and now existing only within a series of interlocking mechanical parts which in time will themselves fail and disappear, like everything else. For months, I listened to these remains of Jhann's music obsessively, trying to discover clues about Jhann before he died. Many times I would find that he had left the recording device going long after the recorded music was over. He seemed to be unaware that the music had ceased or didn't register this was the end of the music or maybe he was distracted by something else. But I found these long silences profoundly emotional and touching.
