The legendary recordings with the Munchner Philharmoniker: Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Dvorak, Ravel, Prokofiev and Debussy on one Blu-ray Sampler. The Munchner Philharmoniker and Sergiu Celibidache share an impressive legacy. Celibidache was principal conductor of the orchestra between 1979 and 1996, a time in which the orchestra gained great international reputation and became renowned worldwide. This legendary recording, includes the performances of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 23 together with pianist Daniel Barenboim and the rehearsal of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto. Celibidache shunned publicity, and his demand for extensive rehearsal periods for any one concert was something that radio-station orchestras could usually only sanction. The exception, on a regular basis, was the Munich Philharmonic, of which Celibidache was music director from 1979 til his death. By choice Celibidache made very few commercial recordings (and those date from the 1950s). Yet, perhaps paradoxically, he allowed his concerts to be broadcasted, filmed and archived and also for rehearsals to be recorded, so that we can follow the maestro's work even today.
This Blu-ray sampler with carefully selected-concerts accompanies Seiji Ozawa's impressive career over 3 decades. Seiji Ozawa was not only Japan's best-known conductor but also the founder of the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto, which in 2015 was renamed the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival. Modest Mussorgsky’s music drama Boris Godunov was premiered in front of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, the same location where this 2014 performance takes place. Conceived by Plamen Kartaloff, director of the Sofia Opera, this production took place 90 years after the building’s consecreation, and was dedicated to the centennial anniversary of the birth of Boris Christoff and the 85th anniversary of the birth of Nicolai Ghiaurov, two vocalists who became famous for their performances as Boris. For this performance, the role of Boris is sung by Martin Tsonev.
This new release from Opus Arte is a live recording from the Glyndebourne Opera House, Lewes, taken in October of 2015, of the first ever professional UK staging of Donizetti’s Poliuto. This masterpiece is rarely performed, but is nevertheless a masterwork that shows the magnanimous genius of this bel canto opera composer. As compositions, the three works featured on this release echo the intensity, visions, and personal character of the composers. Benjamin Britten’s 1937 work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge was composed at the request of Boyd Neel. Neel later conducted the premiere at the 1937 Salzburg Festival. The composition, which launched Britten into international acclaim, was dedicated “to F.B. A tribute with affection and admiration. Bridge had been Britten’s teacher beginning in 1927. Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis was composed in 1910 and premiered later that year at the Three Choirs Festival. Many of Vaughan Williams’ compositions are inspired by music of the Renaissance, this piece, however, is the most directly linked. It is based on a theme by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), one of the most well known Renaissance composers. A ballet in two tableaux, Stravinsky’s Apollon musagete was composed between 1927 and 1928, and choreographed in 1928. The story is based on the Greek legend of Apollo, the God of music, and his visit from the Muses.
Gioachino Rossini’s one act opera L’inganno Felice is categorized as a farsa, as it is a melodrama with buffo elements. The work, which features libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, was an instant success after its premiere in 1812. This production, directed by Jochen Schonleber, was recorded at the Rossini in Wildbad Opera Festival in the summer of 2015. This particular performance received international acclaims, due to stellar directing by Schoenleber and the stars Lorenzo Regazzo and Silvia Della Benetta.

Three of Pärt’s major works – Adam’s Lament, Tabula rasa, and Miserere, as well as Sequentia, a new work composed especially for this production – are brought together here using light, space, and movement to create a tightly-woven Gesamtkunstwerk in which the artistic visions of these two great artists mirror each other.

The starting point and destination of Heinz Spoerli's new ballet is the "Magnificat" by Johann Sebastian Bach. From the beginning of the "Allemande mouvement" of the "Partita in A minor for solo flute" through the joy of living of "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major", this is the the question of faith, which sparked Heinz Spoerli's interest in this piece. Heinz Spoerli intensifies the wealth of expanded emotions here, by inserting the two arias from the cantatas "Wo soll ich fliehen hin" ("Where shall I flee") and "Ich habe genug" ("I have enough"). This is an important aspect for Heinz Spoerli in his discourse with the text of the "Magnificat", in which his deep respect for all religions, or rather every faith, for him is not about the worship of a certain creator-figure, but more about the conditions and prerequisites of this for the expression of a profound devoutness, which also involves rejection, exlusion, uncertainty and separation. Images coming out of the silence and returning back to it, which Heinz Spoerli would like his audience to take with them, images which create individual stories and references. The Orchestra La Scintilla is conducted by Marc Minkoswki.

The Places - the places visited are on the coast of Southern France, from Frejus and Cannes to Marseille. They include the Cheóteau of King Renein Tarascon and the famous island Cheóteau d'If, where the fictional Edmond Dantes was held prisoner in the Count of Monte Cristo. There is particular attention given to the flat marshland of the Camargue, with it's wild horses and it's associated festivities in Arles. The Music - the music that accompanies the tour is all by French composers, from Saint-Saens and Offenbach to Debussy and Ravel. Included are Gabriel Faures evocative Berceuse, Sicilienne and Pavane, and Ravel's nostalgic Pavane sur une infante defunte. The tour starts in cheerful mood with Chabrier's Marche Joyeuse.
