Claude Debussy was profoundly permeated by his French roots. However, his Ballad demonstrates that Russian influences from Tchaikovsky also played an important role in his compositions. In works such as the Danse bohemian and the Arabesques, the fusion of both French and Russian inspiration comes together for a unique aural experience.

Debussy modified the inertias of music without altering the thread of music history; he changed the course without losing north, and avoided the pitfalls that led so many other eminent composers of his era to isolation and melancholy. All this is manifested in the works that Peruvian pianist Claudio Constantini reveals to us in this stunning release, second in a series that presents the recording of the complete piano output of the French composer, in which he performs the 24 Preludes, composed by Debussy in two volumes, the first from 1909 to 1910, while he was already ill with the cancer which would cause his death in 1918, and the second from 1911 to 1913. Together with the first book of Preludes, Claudio Constantini performs the Estampes from 1903 and the Ballade Slave from 1890; and next to the second book of Preludes, his Images oubliées from 1894. Claudio Constantini holds an international and multi-faceted career as a performer of two instruments, the piano and the bandoneon, as well as being a composer in high demand. Born and raised in Lima, Constantini’s unique style is defined by its solid classical roots paired with a passion for popular music genres, among which Latin music and Jazz/fusion play a key role.

This release presents the first books of both the Preludes and the Images, works in which Debussy found his mature piano style, full of unheard colors, atmospheres and perfumes, each with a descriptive title, but even without the title pure creations of imagination and craftmanship. The first volume of the complete recording of Debussy's piano works by Michael Korstick has been compared favorably with those of the legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangelo. The second volume presents Book Two of the Preludes and the rarely recorded "La boite a Joujoux", better known in Debussy's orchestral version of this work.

This is the first volume of Michael Korstick's recording of the complete piano works of Claude Debussy. The featured work is the well known first Book of "Preludes" together with rarities like "Toomai des Elephants" which was originally intended by Debussy for the second Book of "Preludes" but later discarded. Also featured is another Debussy discovery, the "Petite valse," dating from 1915. Korstick's delicate touch and idiomatic approach to every nuance of these suggestive scores will no doubt bring an exciting dimension to interpreting Debussy in the 21st century.

The focus of pianist Michael Korstick’s third third volume of Debussy-explorations is the three volumes of the “Images” from the years 1894, 1905 and 1907. They contain some of Debussy‘s most famous and popular piano works. In addition to these well-known collections Korstick has programmed the “Images oubliées” the “Six Epigraphes antiques” and a series of occasional pieces – which despite their “lesser status” in the composer’s catalogue, are among the most beautiful pieces Debussy wrote.
