Ever since 1995 at the latest, after the Auryn Quartet and Peter Orth released their highly acclaimed recording of Gabriel Faure's piano quintets for CPO, Primarius Matthias Lingenfelder and Peter had dreamed of recording Faure's works for violin and piano. Many years passed. In 2022, the Auryn Quartet retired from concert life. Before that, I wanted one last recording with them for TACET, no matter what, as a farewell. That didn't materialise. But Matthias still had the desire and energy. And so did Peter! So what could be more obvious than finally realising their long-cherished wish? The result is a serene, mature, virtuoso, sensitive and loving performance of this unconventionally beautiful repertoire.

The Requiem "composed for no particular purpose...", as Gabriel Faure wrote, was performed for the first time in the Madeleine Church in Paris on 16 January 1888, "for the funeral of some parishioner"! It is this original performance version, without the Offertory and the Libera me, with accompaniment provided only by a string ensemble (violas, cellos and double bass), organ and harp, that is presented here in a world premiere recording. The Messe des p�cheurs de Villerville (1881), composed in Normandy in collaboration with Andre Messager, is far removed from the solemnities of the great Parisian church; it's original version was written for women's voices with harmonium and violin accompaniment. The Choeur de Chambre de Namur invites us to return to these origins as we mark the centenary of Gabriel Faure's death in 1924.

French music specialist Jean-Luc Tingaud conducts the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in this album of favourites and rarities by Faure. Includes the first movement of the unfinished Violin Concerto, the prelude to the opera Penelope, Henri Rabaud's orchestration of the popular Dolly suite, and more.

It is truly in his songs that Faure reveals the flower of his genius, wrote the composer's former pupil Maurice Ravel. More than a hundred songs written over six decades made Faure perhaps the greatest master of the genre French "melodie." The present collection takes us on a journey from Faure's first song cycle, "Poeme d'un jour" to his last, "L'Horizon chimerique," via the exultant "La Bonne Chanson" and the intensely concentrated "Mirages." The songs have texts by French poets of Faure's time; here we find poems of Charles Grandmougin, Baronne de Brimont, Paul Verlaine and Jean de La Ville de Mirmont. "Mirages" concludes Bettina Smith's project for LAWO Classics of recording all of Gabriel Faure's cycles for voice and piano. It was preceded in this series by Fetes Galantes and "Serres Chaudes," both together with pianist Einar Rottingen. Together they have also released "Voices of Women" with songs of Fartein Valen, Jostein Stalheim and Ketil Hvoslef, composers from Norway's west coast.

At first glance, Gabriel Faur� seems to fit neatly into the history of French music as a pupil of Saint-Sa�ns and a teacher of Ravel. Yet he stands apart from the mainstream because of his unique musical language, and because rather than writing colorful orchestral pieces he preferred to work in the comparatively modest media of the song, solo piano, and chamber music. With the exception of the late String Quartet, all of his chamber works combine the piano - Faur�'s own instrument as a performer - with strings. Among the earlier works, written in the late 1870s and mid-1880s, are the two Quartets for piano and string trio presented here. Since their first concert in January 1983, the Schubert Ensemble has established itself as one of the world's leading exponents of music for piano and strings. Regularly giving around 50 concerts a year, the ensemble has performed in over 40 different countries, has over 80 commissions to it's name, has recorded over 30 critically acclaimed CDs, and is familiar to British audiences through regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.

Gabriel Fauré, a master of song, piano, and chamber music, particularly appreciated the modulation-rich sound of the Érard grand piano. Its rich overtones and clear bass tones made it the ideal instrument for the French salon. This release presents not only Fauré's musical vision but also the sound world of the Érard grand piano, which played an important role in the musical scene at the time. Marc Coppey fully embraces the fluid rhetoric of Fauré's musical language. His interpretation deliberately eschews stylistically unfamiliar permanent espressivo and instead delves deep into the nuances and facets of Fauré's compositions. "Fauré authentique" thus presents not only musical brilliance but also an authentic journey through the French composer's complete works for cello and piano, embedded in the beautiful sound of the Érard grand piano.

Mandy Fredrich's album brings together a series of art songs that create coherent arcs and longer storylines like a kind of mini-opera. The composers' songs were used to put together four stories about lovers, all of which revolve around the theme of dream happiness in all it's different facets! After her breakthrough in the role of the Queen of the Night at the Salzburg Festival under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, engagements followed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the New National Theatre in Tokyo, the Zurich Opera House, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the State Operas in Munich and Hamburg and at the Bregenz Festival. Matthias Samuil has been Mandy Fredrich's accompanist for many years.
