2014 Maria Callas re-mastered series reissue. With this Abbey Road 24-bit 96kHz re-master, engineers returned to the original master tapes, bringing new clarity & brilliance to her legendary studio recordings. Violetta, the most complex and fully-rounded of Verdi's heroines, was one of the roles that defined Maria Callas as an artist. She performed it more than 60 times between 1951 and 1958, most famously in Luchino Visconti's production at La Scala in 1955/56. It is often said that the role demands a different kind of voice for each act, and, when she made this recording for the Cetra label in 1953, Callas offered youthful, ringing power complemented by coloratura prowess and the capacity for great delicacy. More than 60 years on, her characterization, in it's subtlety and truth, still sets the standard for La traviata.

The collaborative efforts, the mutual emulation and inspiration of Sir Antonio Pappano and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome have spanned 18 years, led to one of the world's greatest and most versatile virtuoso ensembles and to acclaimed live and studio recordings showcasing an eclectic selection of symphonic and choral music. Their repertoire features already legendary performances of Verdi's Requiem and Quattro pezzi sacri. In addition, their recording of Bruckner's 8th Symphony features here for the very first time! The Artemis Quartet began life in 1989 and developed a particular reputation in the central Austro-German repertoire. Richard Moohr's recording of Ernani in Rome for RCA in 1967 was the first stereo recording of this Opera. It featured an exceptional cast with Carlo Bergonzi and Leontyne Price under the conduction of Thomas Schippers. Since then there have been no more than four recordings of this work, and this version is still considered one of the most significant in Verdi's discography. It has not been available on the market for several years. For this reason we have made it available in our catalogue.

Enrico Caruso is still considered the most famous operatic tenor of the 20th century. He was certainly the highest paid, and most adored singer of his time. In this fascinating recording, remastered, of course, from 78 rpms, Caruso is showcased in a series of short excerpts.
The power and beauty of his voice is evident even in these very early recordings. Spanning from 1908 through 1919, the disc captures Caruso in concert with other famous singers of the day, including Guiseppe de Luca, Luisa Tetrazzini, Geraldine Farrar, and Amelita Galli-Curci. Walter B. Rogers, Josep Pasternack, and Gaetano Sconamiglio conduct.
There are some unusual, rarely heard selections by Antonio Gomes and Friedrich Flotow, for example, as well as excerpts from the standard repertory. All in all, this is a fine compilation, a "blast from the past," as it were, that gives the listener much pleasure.
