The Big Screen trio explores the worlds of stage and screen, swinging through a selection of timeless melodies that enjoy universal appeal. A heavyweight of British jazz, pianist David Newton is joined for this project by bassist Tom Farmer (from Empirical), and drummer Matt Skelton. Opening with a rendition of the small-screen theme 'Bewitched', most of the action takes place on the big screen, with 'Heather On The Hill', Toy Story 2's 'When Somebody Loved Me', My Fair Lady's 'Get Me To The Church On Time' and 'On The Street Where You Live', among other numbers.

This album is the second in a series of recordings honoring the lives and music of individuals who have made significant contributions to big band jazz and to music education. The Legacy of Hank Levy honors a man who made his life's work the composition and teaching of a specifically American musical genre, jazz. Levy's arrangements consistently employed unusual time signatures and harmonies. He served as an arranger for Stan Kenton and the Don Ellis Orchestra, as well as founder and long-time director of Towson University's Jazz Program. Honoring the memory and innumerable musical contributions of Hank Levy, this album is both inspiring and captivating.

Violinist Benjamin Schmid, recognized among the 35 greatest violinists of the past 50 years (see “Great Violinists of the 20th c. Vol. 2. 1948-85 ”, by J.M. Molkou), and rising star Diknu Schneeberger, guitar, trace Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt on Hot Club Jazz, new from Gramola. In collaboration with Diknu’s father Joschi Schneeberger, double bass, and guitarist Martin Spitzer, the quartet interprets pieces and arrangements by Django Reinhardt, works created in succession by Lulu Reinhardt, Cole Porter or Fletcher Allen as well as arrangements of French chansons.

Joe Stilgoe’s blend of imaginative song choices and virtuosic pianism are showcased in this live album recorded at the 2013 London Jazz Festival. With a voice that has attracted comparisons with Harry Connick Jr, Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum and a playing style likened to the great Oscar Peterson, Joe displays charm, wit and sincerity as he tackles a diverse selection of songs linked by the theme of film which The Sunday Times described as ‘a touching yet quirky selection of stardust memories.’ A fast-paced romp through well-known cartoon theme tunes opens the show before Joe turns his attention to numbers as varied as You Give A Little Love from Bugsy Malone, S’Wonderful from An American In Paris and If I Only Had A Brain from The Wizard Of Oz. Joe’s song-writing skills are in evidence on Gold On Silver, Popcorn and his wistful ballad (That's The Way It Crumbles) Cookie-Wise, inspired by Billy Wilder’s The Apartment.

Visits blurs lines between improvisation and composition, jazz and classical, spontaneity and planning. To hear what Triade do is to lose yourself in endless possibilities. Cellist Michelle Kinney drew Carei Thomas and Gary Schulte down a new path, away more traditional jazz improvising. New possibilities opened up, and new compositions were spontaneously generated on fragments of Thomas' work. Recorded in the mid-1990s, it receives via innova it's first digital pressing.

United States Air Force Airmen of Noted: A Holiday Note From

Renaud-Gabriel Pion is a successful composer, multi-instrumentalist, and improvisational musician. He performs on bass clarinet, Turkish clarinet, saxophone, bass flute, English horn, electronic woodwind instruments, and piano. He is based in Paris and Berlin. Of this project, Pion writes: “This music made sense to open windows on the city, the charm is immediately established. New York Sketches questions the permeability of the process of composition and recording the sound of the external environment- the opposite of the usual confinement in an airtight place.” (Translated fromwww.renaudgabrielpion.org) An extensive booklet is included with full color photographs of the most inspirational places in New York to Renaud-Gabirl Pion.

Centered around accordionist Vincent Peirani, the ensemble Living Being presents this new, extended album. The works on these two discs were recorded at the November 2013 SWR NEWJazz Meeting. For this meeting, Peirani expanded his core quintet to include Mathias Eick and Leila Martial. The extended group performed three concerts, in Tubingen, Mainz, and Karlsruhe.

Joe Stilgoe gives a masterclass in nostalgia with a contemporary twist on ‘New Songs For Old Souls’, his first studio album for Linn Records following his signing to the label in 2014. The album comprises twelve songs with ten originals by Joe, including three big band numbers: ‘Nobody Cares Like Me’, ‘Pocket Song’ and ‘Gold On Silver’. Joe also duets with Liane Carroll on a wistful cover of Brian Wilson’s ‘I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times’, one of the album’s two non-original songs. ‘Revealing himself to be a powerful improviser with an instinctive gift for melody.’ (The Times)

Founded in 1971 by Ornette Coleman, Karl Berger, and Ingrid Sertso, the Creative Music Studio (CMS) had a simple goal: create music, without boundaries. Artists came to Woodstock, NY, to be a part of a collective synergy, to live and work together as they found common ground and developed their vocabulary. The CMS Archive Selections documents that vocabulary and those creations, and this 3-CD set on innova Recordings represents its first fruits.

Since making his name at age 19, he has been a standard-bearer of Swedish jazz for over 50 years, inspiring and accompanying many generations of musicians. Featured in the 19-man band are virtually the entire jazz elite from 1970’s and 80’s, including Parlan and Raney.
