Louis Glass was a contemporary of Carl Nielsen, however his musical ideals were of the late-Romantic idiom. Like Nielsen he composed six symphonies, but as a composer he was a dreamer and his lush, brilliantly orchestrated works hark back to a time when modernism had no influence. This is the first complete recording of the six symphonies which were played frequently in Denmark, but vanished into the mist of a forgotten world. The splendid Bulgarian orchestra easily identifies with Glass’ musical sound world, stretching back and absorbing the style of the early Richard Strauss. These symphonies were recorded between October 1999 and August 2000, and feature the Plodiv Philharmonic led by renowned conductor Nayden Todorov.

This new release with the Danish Copenhagen early music ensemble Musica Ficta under conductor Bo Holten was recorded in a live concert Nov. 18 in Bari, Italy. After the concert the following praise was given: “As I told you, I've heard lots of groups sing Gesualdo, many of them very, very good. But I would rank yours right at the top. It was absolutely splendid, and for that you have my eternal thanks.” (Glenn Watkins, leading Gesualdo scholar). The intensity of the performance and the stylish and vocally superb musicianship shines through with full force. Early music ensemble Musica Ficta is the leading Danish expert group in the field of early music. Their recordings consistently receive high ratings from critics and audiences, and their concerts continuously delight fans.

Danacord continues it's tribute to the Danish cellist Erling Blondal Bengtsson. For this volume of recordings emanating from Danish Radio Bengtsson plays two staples of most cellists' repertoire, masterworks by Shostakovich and Richard Strauss, spicing things up with music by Berio and Ligeti, such choices opening up our perceptions of Bengtsson's repertoire, and then going further by including his sympathy for concertos written for and dedicated to him. Thus, this programme adds up to a revealing portrait of Bengtsson's versatility and virtuosity.
