Paul Chambers Jr. (1935-1969) was a jazz double bassist who was the anchor for trumpeter Miles Davis for eight years. Chambers' contribution on "Kind Of Blue" is considered to be some of the most rhythmically and harmonically supportive bass playing in the history of jazz. Chambers' masterpiece 'Bass On Top' opens with "Yesterdays" which has some of the most beautiful bowed bass you can hear, with a sensitive but subtle support from Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones, and Art Taylor. "Dear Old Stockholm" is a another great beauty. (Also recorded on Davis' 'Round Midnight', with a great Paul Chambers solo). "I'm Confessin' That I Love You" is essential Paul alone for four minutes of pure beauty.

The 'Master and Pupil' philosophy stems from an epoch when composers first began pilgrimages throughout Europe developing their skills and teaching other musicians and composers. This theme is the very core of Sestina Music's own philosophy, with younger musicians placed under the wings of experienced professionals in an apprentice-like fashion. Music has always been a craft of apprenticeship, with knowledge and skill passed down through the generations from master to pupil. The inspiration at the very heart of this recording is found in the works of Claudio Monteverdi, his influences and the immense legacy he instilled in his pupils and was equally instilled in him by his own teachers. The album celebrates these legacies with music by composers including Josquin des Prez, Marc'Antonio Ingegneri, Giovanni Gabrieli and Salamone Rossi.

Joe Chambers is one of the drummers from the fifties and sixties who, along with Max Roach and Art Blakey has influenced an entire generation of drummers. With an ensemble that includes stalwarts Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Xavier Davis on piano and others, Chambers here breathes fresh life into a number of well-known jazz classics. While the overall approach is mainstream, the sound is unequivocally contemporary. It remains reverential to tradition yet with a clear regard for jazz as a living, breathing entity.

Joe Chambers has been described as one of the great drummers to come out of the '60s. Also a master of all mallet instruments, piano and a composer, he has performed with most of the modern jazz giants, including Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie and the Max Roach M'Boom Ensemble. Joe Chambers, the composer, has scored soundtracks for several films and it is his composing and arranging talents which are spotlighted in his most recent recording with this all-star large jazz ensemble.

Drummer, percussionist, vibraphonist, composer, and Blue Note legend Joe Chambers returns with Dance Kobina, his 3rd album as a leader for Blue Note which explores the deep musical connection between Jazz, Latin, Brazilian, Argentinian, and African music. The follow-up to his 2021 album Samba de Maracatu was co-produced by pianist Andr�s Vial and recorded in both New York and Montreal. The album presents compelling Chambers originals including "Gazelle Suite," "Ruth," and "Caravanserai," as well as vibrant interpretations of pieces by Vial, Kurt Weill, Joe Henderson, and Karl Ratzer.
