Joshua Redman's newest album is a jazz celebration of 20th century popular song. Featuring 10 tracks by 10 composers - ranging from the Gershwin's, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Rogers & Hammerstein to Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Prince - it's a stunning collection of modern standards freshly interpreted by one of the preeminent figures of contemporary jazz. Featured tracks include "Summertime," "Visions" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?"

Joshua Redman made a splash on the modern jazz scene with Wish, his second album. With his signature saxophone, he transforms tracks such as Eric Clapton's "Tears of Heaven" into modern, pop-oriented jazz. The album includes a few original tracks alongside his jazz interpretations, and the album's cohesiveness is as admirable as it is pleasurable.

Redman has earned a well-deserved reputation as perhaps the most extraordinary saxophonist to emerge in the '90's. The material on this album (said to be his most far-reaching and ambitious work to date) was honed by Joshua and his musicians during an extensive world tour earlier this year. Joshua adds a more groove-oriented rhythmic element to his music with tremendous success. All 10 of the album's tracks were composed and arranged by Joshua and produced by his longtime producer Matt Pierson.

As the quartet performed steadily on the road, Redman felt a vibe developing and was inspired to bring them into the studio to record a set of music he had composed during the pandemic that embraced the shifting moods of wistfulness, sadness and resolve. The album also features special guest appearances by saxophonist Melissa Aldana, trumpeter Skylar Tang and vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812-65) was one of the leading musicians of his day, a friend of Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn, and for Joseph Joachim 'the greatest violinist I ever heard'. This sixth album - in a series of seven presenting all his compositions for the first time - begins and ends with some of the most difficult music for solo violin ever composed: Ernst's Six Polyphonic Studies (the last of which is a set of variations on 'The Last Rose of Summer') and his transcription of Schubert's song, Der Erlkonig. Between these pieces come some less familiar fare: five Schubertian piano pieces, and two settings of Goethe.

COLOR & LIGHT: JAZZ SKETCHES

2019 release from Joshua Redman and Brooklyn Rider. The album comprises eight compositions from a suite by composer Patrick Zimmerli. Each piece in the suite, which premiered at London's Wigmore Hall in 2014, represents a different expression of light. Bassist Scott Colley and drummer Satoshi Takeishi perform as well. Redman previously worked with Zimmerli when the latter created orchestral arrangements of Redman's compositions for the 2013 Nonesuch album Walking Shadows.
