Joshua Redman's second Blue Note album, Words Fall Short, is a collection of original compositions that serves as the introduction of his new quartet, featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo, which formed as a working band for the world tour behind the saxophonist's label debut - where are we. After the brilliant finale at the 2019 Willisau Jazz Festival with saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and drummer Chad Taylor, Lucerne journalist Pirmin Bossart wrote: "The music sought neither to preach nor impress, instead revealing itself as pure, spirited intensity. 'Yeah! Yeah!' James Brandon cries after the final note of 'Willisee' adding a jubilant 'Wow!'". The duo had just finished a track which Dewey Redman and Ed Blackwell played on the same stage in 1980, a stage where Max Roach & Archie Shepp also wrote jazz history. Lewis and Taylor pay tribute to this legacy and conjure up the spirit of Great Black Music in the very first piece with an homage to John Coltrane. New Yorker James Brandon Lewis has attracted attention in recent years with his album UnRuly Manifesto. The record was listed among the best new releases of 2019 in the USA. The "New York Times" attests him a great musical autonomy: "James Brandon Lewis, a jazz saxophonist in his 30s, raw-toned but measured, doesn't sound steeped in current jazz academy values and isn't really coming from a free-improvising perspective. There's an independence about him." The drummer Chad Taylor comes from Chicago and has played with Fred Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Marc Ribot, Malachi Favors and Nicole Mitchel. On Intakt Records he plays on the live album with Aruan Ortiz and Brad Jones. Bossart writes: "The two musicians let us hear the great breath of an essential jazz tradition, it's clarity, raw beauty and urgency shining through, even in the melting pot of contemporary jazz debates. The musicians are not stuck in a version of the past. At every second they are part of the musical process, which shapes itself and pulses with their experiences of the here and now. This is about a continuum, occurring yesterday, today and tomorrow. Why else would jazz have retained till today it's transformative power?"

2019 release from Joshua Redman and Brooklyn Rider. The album comprises eight compositions from a suite by composer Patrick Zimmerli. Each piece in the suite, which premiered at London's Wigmore Hall in 2014, represents a different expression of light. Bassist Scott Colley and drummer Satoshi Takeishi perform as well. Redman previously worked with Zimmerli when the latter created orchestral arrangements of Redman's compositions for the 2013 Nonesuch album Walking Shadows.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812-65) was one of the leading musicians of his day, a friend of Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn, and for Joseph Joachim 'the greatest violinist I ever heard'. This sixth album - in a series of seven presenting all his compositions for the first time - begins and ends with some of the most difficult music for solo violin ever composed: Ernst's Six Polyphonic Studies (the last of which is a set of variations on 'The Last Rose of Summer') and his transcription of Schubert's song, Der Erlkonig. Between these pieces come some less familiar fare: five Schubertian piano pieces, and two settings of Goethe.

2019 release. Joshua Redman Quartet's Come What May is the first album in almost two decades from this group of musicians - the saxophonist and his longtime friends and colleagues pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson - and features seven Redman tunes. "Mr. Redman's place is secure as one of the most effusive and engaging tenor saxophonists in straight-ahead jazz," says the New York Times, and the Quartet is "well attuned to his language of elastic tenacity."

Joshua Redman's newest album is a jazz celebration of 20th century popular song. Featuring 10 tracks by 10 composers - ranging from the Gershwin's, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Rogers & Hammerstein to Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Prince - it's a stunning collection of modern standards freshly interpreted by one of the preeminent figures of contemporary jazz. Featured tracks include "Summertime," "Visions" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?"

Redman has earned a well-deserved reputation as perhaps the most extraordinary saxophonist to emerge in the '90's. The material on this album (said to be his most far-reaching and ambitious work to date) was honed by Joshua and his musicians during an extensive world tour earlier this year. Joshua adds a more groove-oriented rhythmic element to his music with tremendous success. All 10 of the album's tracks were composed and arranged by Joshua and produced by his longtime producer Matt Pierson.

Joshua Redman made a splash on the modern jazz scene with Wish, his second album. With his signature saxophone, he transforms tracks such as Eric Clapton's "Tears of Heaven" into modern, pop-oriented jazz. The album includes a few original tracks alongside his jazz interpretations, and the album's cohesiveness is as admirable as it is pleasurable.
