Carson Cooman is many things musical - organist and Composer in Residence at the Memorial Church, Harvard University; writer, critic and consultant, concert organist, and above all a highly prolific composer of music in a wide variety of genres, from orchestral to song. His organ compositions come in many styles, from liturgical models, to more gritty and substantial pieces such as his organ symphonies and preludes and fugues. The music in this programme, all composed in 2016 and 2017, is varied and consists of concert pieces (though suitable for church use) as opposed to explicitly liturgical works. Erik Simmons is a fine organist, making his seventh Cooman organ album for Divine Art. He is playing the Cavaille-Coll organ of the Abbey of Saint-Etienne, Caen, France in a live performance recorded through the Hauptwerk system. This is volume 7 of this highly praised series.

Anthony Goldstone died on January 2, 2017 after a year-long battle with illness. This was his last recording, and is issued now also as a tribute and memorial to one of the greatest pianists of our age who never achieved the international recognition he deserved. English composer Philip Wood (b. 1972) has been greatly influenced by the compositional style of Britten, as well as the modern British lyrical writers Vaughan Williams, Holst, and Rawsthorne to name a few. Containing vocal and chamber works by Philip Wood, Sonnets, Airs and Dances features pieces of intense lyricism. World-renowned countertenor James Bowman and acclaimed soprano Lesley-Jane Rogers are the featured vocalists on this recording. John Turner is featured on the recorder, alongside cellists Heather Bills, Jonathan Price, and harpsichordist Harvey Davies.

This new release presents a varied range of masterful works from English twentieth century composers- some familiar, and all works of importance. Elgar composed his Enigma Variations at the piano; it was always suitable for a solo version and Elgar himself wrote this. Bowen’s Flute Sonata is well known- a Romantic staple- as is Leighton’s Elegy, which deserves to be better known. The piano solo work Folio I is lively and full of fun, while the two Sonnets of Rubbra are exquisitely gorgeous and absolutely essential listening. These are fine performances by pianist Elspeth Wyllie who is an accomplished soloist and chamber musician/accompanist, working throughout the United Kingdom and other countries. She is a founding member of the Metier Ensemble and the Amalie Trio, performing regularly with them and in projects with other musicians from major ensembles, orchestras and opera companies. The young set of musicians here show exceptional talent and musicianship in the recorded works which are very varied yet make up a coherent concert album.

Psallite is a unique and inspirational kaleidoscope of sacred choral works, which bridges several centuries and allows the listener to experience the continuousness of praise across generations. Renaissance masters such as Palestrina are featured on this disc, as well as contemporary composers such as Esenvalds and Bryars. Beautifully arranged African-American spirituals are also included. Cor Cantiamo performs the works on this disc. Conducted by Eric A. Johnson, the ensemble is currently the Choir in Residence at Northern Illinois University.

John Buckley is one of a group of highly talented and inspired composers from Ireland who have embraced today's need for music which is rich and diverse, complex but accessible too. His considerable output includes chamber and vocal works as well as his exceptional choral music of which we have a selection here. From folk song adaptations to classic text settings and a range of serious, pastoral and witty pieces, the new album 'To the Northeast' is one that stands out from the crowd and is truly memorable. Also from Dublin, Mornington Singers are superbly conducted by Orla Flanagan, and provide a performance which in each work is totally in tune with the text and the setting. Most songs are in English, though the Five Two-Part songs for children are sung in Gaelic Irish.

Unfairly named 'The Lady with the Hammer' for her uncompromising use of massive thunderous chords and ostinato rhythms, Ustvolskaya was a pupil of Shostakovich but forged her own unique way into many genres. Recently, artists have concentrated, as here, on bringing out the richness of the works and their innate lyricism. This album includes all of the composer's music for violin and piano in two major works - the Sonata and the Duet. Russian violinist Evgeny Sorkin was a child prodigy and performed for Isaac Stern at the age of 10 and was compared at 16 to David Oistrakh by no less than Yehudi Menuhin. He moved to Australia and balanced teaching at Sydney Conservatory with a busy recital schedule. Natalia Andreeva is a Russian pianist who is currently Lecturer in Piano at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her 2015 recording of the complete solo piano music of Galina Ustvolskaya was very well received; she is a pianist of consummate skill who can express the power and lyricism which exist side by side in these works.

Vyacheslav Artyomov is considered by many to be Russia's greatest living composer. His music is deep, ultimately spiritual and brilliantly crafted, with influences from the Russian symphonic tradition colored by Mahler, Scriabin, Honegger and Messiaen to name a few - but melded into a unique voice. The Divine Art Artyomov Retrospective (which to date has received wonderful reviews internationally) is a mix of new recordings and former Melodiya releases. This is the tenth album, containing 2018 recordings of two majestic and brilliant works. The Symphony In Spe (In Hope) with concertante violin and cello broke new ground in Artyomov's writing in it's use of polydynamic, ever changing textures while retaining his deep spirituality. Latin Hymns presents four sacred texts in the most virtuosic writing for choir and soloist, not only prayers to the Virgin Mary but recreating her persona in music. The performance by Nadezhda Pavlova is simply stunning.

Husband and wife team Robert and Linda Stoodley are an adventurous duo with a very wide range of repertoire from the pops to major classical works which they present to appreciative audiences all around the world, spending much time as recitalists on cruise ships. They are also accomplished arrangers, as demonstrated by the brilliant transcriptions on their recordings. Following their well received Divine Art debut album 'France Revisited' they present superb new arrangements of George Gershwin works from the serious (Porgy & Bess) to tin pan alley songs, often interwined and merged. Purists may frown but such arrangements, sampling and "medleying" were well known to Gershwin himself.

Peter Hope is an English composer whose name is not well known to the public, but some of his music certainly is. A veteran of the light music genre, he has been a fulltime composer and arranger for fifty years, working for many years with the BBC Concert Orchestra- many of his arrangements becoming classics in their genre, also writing music for the marriage of the Crown Prince of Spain and many other public events. His theme tune for BBC TV news ran for over a decade, known to practically every person in the UK. Since 2000 he has concentrated on more serious and extended compositions, though retaining a commercial sense of approachable style. This album features four wind sonatas and two other works, performed by instrumentalists of high caliber and renown. All the works are receiving the premiere recording and one is being considered as the music for an animated film based on the music itself.

Divine Art presents The Juniper Project in their debut duo recording in the format of a concert recital with a variety of Romantic and modern works from Debussy to Lutoslawski. The album title is named for the Lutoslawski piece, but also represents the inclusion of highlight movements from works by Marson and Rutter. Greek flutist Anna Rosa Mari is a vibrant performer who has appeared around the world as a soloist, has been principal flute with the Greek National Opera and has appeared with the Halle, BBC Philharmonic and many other leading orchestras. Eira Lynn Jones is one of the UK's leading harpists with a wide range of activities including concertizing, recording and teaching. A regular freelancer with most top UK orchestras, and previously a member of the Manhattan Contemporary Music Ensemble, New York, she is currently also head of Harp at the Royal Northern College of Music.
