Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. The band Gillespie assembled for this date - Junior Mance, Les Spann, Sam Jones, & Lex Humphries - was for the most part a working band on the club & concert circuit, offering a mixture of Gillespie's entertaining songs, established repertoire, & some Latin & African-influenced pieces. With them, Dizzy found a middle ground in his music that gave his legacy room to breathe, but with much more rhythmic variety.

Here is Dizzy Gillespie's complete 1961 Monterey Jazz Festival performance, introduced by Diz as 'A Musical Safari'. This remarkable set reflects the quintet's working repertoire of the period, including a foray into bossa nova and features the superb Leo Wright and Argentinian pianist Lalo Schifrin. The first Monterey Jazz Festival was staged in 1958 and, since then, Jimmy Lyons and musical director John Lewis have traditionally gathered each September under the California sky many of the great names in jazz, along with several thousand enthusiastic listeners.

Originally created as an invitation by Rolling Stone magazine in 1977, as part of a gala issue celebrating the magazine's move from San Francisco to New York, which featured literary and art contributors honoring it's new home. Cage constructed his waltzes as a series of 49 multi-colored triangles superimposed on the Hagstrom map of New York City, each point derived by the use of chance operations. Wanting to celebrate Cage's memory, Don Gillespie decided to collect the sights and sounds from the locations specified in "49 Waltzes." This ambitious project of filming Cage's 147 specific locations in New York's five boroughs took one year to complete.

In the late-classical era, an Edinburgh publisher commissioned the most famous composers in continental Europe to orchestrate traditional Scottish folk songs in their original English. A lush sampling of this music is performed here by Makaris, a new early-music super-group headed by soprano Fiona Gillespie. (Olde Focus)

November 20, 1961 Dizzy Gillespie brought on stage of Falkoner Centret, Copenhagen the quintet version of “Gillespiana Suite”, composed originally for his 16-piece orchestra by young Argentine composer/pianist Lalo Schifrin.
The suite was recorded in the previous year to become a huge success.
This composition paved the way for Schifrin to become one of the most popular screen music composers. The program finishes with Gillespie’s own Kush which stayed in his repertoire for the next 15 years

STUDIO AND 'LIVE' COLLABORATIONS 1960-62 - DIZZY GILLESPIE / LALO SCHIFRIN - Lalo Schifrin is an Argentinian pianist, composer, arranger and conductor who studied and played in France in the early '50s before forming his own jazz orchestra in Argentina. He first met Dizzy Gillespie in 1956 and wrote the extended work "Gillespiana" for him. While in New York in 1960, he was offered chance to join Gillespie's Quintet as pianist, and over the next two years recorded a number of sessions with Gillespie as well as performing with Gillespie at recorded concerts and club dates, which established his reputation, providing the basis for his becoming a celebrated composer of film music in later years. This 2-CD set comprises studio and 'live' recordings from the albums "Gillespiana", "Jazz At The Philharmonic In Europe", "An Electrifying Evening With The Dizzy Gillespie Quintet" and "Dizzy On The French Riviera", along with selected other 'live" performances. It includes performances with a number of noted jazz musicians, including Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson. Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Cannonball Adderley, Leo Wright, Chuck Lampkin, Bob Cunningham, Candido Camero, Charlie Ventura, Mel Lewis and others. It's a highly enlightening introduction to Schifrin's early years on the US jazz scene, working with one of the pioneers and architects of bebop, on a range of repertoire that includes his own compositions, bebop classics and vibrant Latin jazz.

“...an intriguing recording, because it catches one of the idiom’s most important trumpeters, not merely at the height of his mature powers, but at an interesting point of transition between two of the very best editions of his small bands...” (Chris Sheridan)
“.....The heavily blues based styles of Mance and Wright complemented the soulful side of Gillespie who was without question at the peak of his powers at this time....As with all of Nils Winther’s work, the sound is beautifully balanced, and the digital transfers are excellent.” (Cadence)
