Chilean virtuoso Claudio Arrau, (1903-1991) was one of the greatest and most recorded pianists of all time. His musical talent was recognized from an early age and he played his first recital at age five. At age eight the Chilean government awarded him a grant for study in Berlin with Waldemar Lutsch and Martin Krause who was a student of Franz Liszt and whose teaching and influence were greatly significant on Arrau. Arrau's adolescent career flourished in Germany - his formal Berlin debut of 1914 was followed by tours of Germany and Scandinavia. He won the Liszt prize for the second time in 1920. The same year he played his Berlin Philharmonic debut with conductor Karl Muck. Also in 1920, he made his London debut. In 1923 and 1924 he came to the United States. In 1926 Arrau returned to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin as a professor of piano, a position which he held until 1940. In 1927 he won the Concours International de Pianists in Geneva. He returned to the USA with a 1941 Carnegie Hall recital receiving rave reviews, which effectively re-launched his American career. DOREMI is pleased to present here Claudio Arrau in two concerts of Chopin and Liszt: two concertos from Copenhagen with the Danish Radio Orchestra (September 1967), and his recital at the Helsinki Festival in September, 1972 which includes Liszt's Sonata in B Minor.

When Christian Ferras died at age 49. his friend and colleague Yehudi Menuhin wrote that Ferras was"possessed by music, immensely talented, and of both a generous and intense temperament."

Christian Ferras was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Born in 1933, he was a guest soloist of the Nice Symphony orchestra in1942. In 1948 he won the First Prize at the International Scheveningen (Holland) Violin Competition and in 1949 won the top prize at the International Long-Thibaud Competition. Thereafter, he pursued a successful career as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras and in recitals with his long time accompanist, pianist Pierre Barbizet. He recorded for EMI and from 1964 for DG where he recorded the four main repertoire violin concertos, Brahms, Sibelius, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, with Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Fortunately, Christian Ferras left behind a rich recorded legacy, that enable us to continue to enjoy his great artistry.

DOREMI’s second CD dedicated to the artistry of the legendary duo of Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya provides a fascinating panorama of the development of the classical guitar in the middle decades of the twentieth century through the lens of two of its greatest exponents. There is a poignancy to each panel of this musical triptych—the 13-year-old prodigy on the verge of a great career suspended and delayed by the Second World War; the globe-trotting Duo at the height of their achievement, unaware of Presti’s imminent passing; and Lagoya’s first steps at reinventing himself as a concert soloist after his wife’s unexpected death two years earlier. This selection of hitherto unreissued performances affords a unique insight into their unparalleled artistry. It opens with three newly remastered and restored 78 recordings made by Ida Presti between 1937 and 1942, revealing her precocious musical insight and matchless virtuosity. There follows Alexandre Lagoya’s first solo LP, made two years after Presti’s passing, recorded at the Orford Arts Centre in 1969. It includes two solos and unique performances with violinist Andrew Dawes of a Duo by Paganini and a Boccherini Quintet with the Orford Quartet. The programme concludes with the broadcast of a rare live performance of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Concerto for Two Guitars, identified by the announcer (but not independently verified) as the “création mondiale,” which took place in Toronto, Canada on December 4, 1962.
