Both Martha Argerich and Ruggiero Ricci belong with the most respected exponents of their instruments. Presented here is a joint recital from Leningrad and a performance of the Ravel Piano Concerto from 1960 and 1961, when the great Martha Argerich was still in her teens. In the recital program is the solo violin sonata by Prokofiev, a work that Ricci himself premiered in Modcowb in 1959.

The eminent Martha Argerich is one of the most loved and admired classical pianists of all time. She quickly gained and maintained world-wide reputation for her exciting performances. This set is the 7th volume in DOREMI’s special series of live performances and broadcasts featuring the artistry of the young Martha Argerich. This volume features works by Prokofiev, Robert Schumann, Chopin, Bach, Liszt, and Ravel, all recorded live during the second half of the 1960s. Each of these recordings is receiving here its first ever release.

The classical guitarist is normally imagined as a solitary figure performing on stage. We think of Andres Segovia appearing as a soloist for over 80 years.. But guitarists have not only been soloists. As a teenager, Segovia himself was a member of a "pulso y pua" ensemble of lauds and bandurrias, the Quinteto Albeniz, and he commissioned concertos and chamber works from contemporary composers. Volume 15 of Segovia and His Contemporaries presents the live 1939 world premiere of the maestro performing Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Concerto in D. This historic broadcast is buttressed by rare recordings of the Trio Albeniz, Angel Barrios' Cuarteto Iberia, German Lago's Orquesta Ibérica de Madrid, and Francisco Collado's' Orquesta Guitarristica.

Described by the New York Times in 1944 as “One of the most remarkably gifted of the younger generation of American keyboard artists”. Leon Fleisher was born in San Francisco in 1928. In 1944, at age 16, he played the Brahms first Piano Concerto as soloist with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Pierre Monteux. In 1952 he won the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels. He played the Brahms and Beethoven Piano Concertos often and recorded them with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1964, he noticed that two fingers of his right hand were beginning to involuntarily curl up. He tried every therapy that existed then, but his solo career was effectively ended. He continued to teach, and conduct and in 1967 began to perform works for the left hand. In 1995 he succeeded to regain the use if his right hand and began performing and recording with two-hands. Leon Fleisher passed away in 2020 at age 92.

These albums of his live performances are an eloquent testament to his musical insights, technical command and his gorgeous, luminous tone. Isaac Stern was born in 1920, in Krzemieniec, now in Ukraine. A year later his parents came to San Francisco. Violin lessons began at eight, with Naoum Blinder. Two years later he made his debut, playing Bach double concerto with his teacher. His Town Hall debut in 1937 was followed by a Carnegie Hall debut in 1943. He was the first American artist to tour the former Soviet Union-and as a result became a deeply respected figure there. The campaign to save Carnegie Hall began in 1960. The Six-Day War of 1967 saw his iconic performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Leonard Bernstein on Mount Scopus. His involvement with Hollywood, which began in 1948 with his performance in Humoresque, was followed up in 1971, when he played on the soundtrack of Fiddler on the Roof. His travel to China in 1979 led to a resurgence of classical music in that country. He recorded prolifically and received countless honors and tributes. This release contains first releases of live performances of Four Mozart’s piano concertos.

A brilliant violinist with virtuoso flair, effortless technique and wonderful artistry. Bronislaw Gimpel has made many recordings and his legacy is also preserved on many radio broadcasts, such as those in this album. Born in Lvov, Poland, in 1911, Gimpel began the violin at 5. His first public appearance came in 1919, when he played the Mendelssohn Concerto. His international performances began at 14, when he performed the Goldmark Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic. He immigrated to the United States in 1937 and Otto Klemperer invited him to be the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which he also occasionally conducted. He remained there until 1942. In the latter half of the 1940s he was a frequent soloist and conductor of the ABC Radio Orchestra in New York. In 1950 he formed the Mannes-Gimpel-Silva Piano Trio which had a great success. In 1956 he returned to Europe where he re-established a substantial concert career and his engagements included guest soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic. He returned to the United States in 1967 to take up a position on the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut and returned once again to Europe in 1973 to teach at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Gimpel passed away in 1979, at the age of 68.
