Horace Parlan’s Glad I Found You is his second quintet date for SteepleChase which captures a rare meeting of inspired musicians at a peak moment, recorded in Copenhagen with Thad Jones — making a vibrant late career comeback — and the always inventive Eddie Harris. Parlan leads the quintet full of warmth, swing and spontaneous interplay. The album blends Parlan’s own tunes, soulful obscurities, and modern jazz classics like “Afternoon in Paris,” all delivered with the rhythmic looseness and deep blues feeling that defined his style. This new 24bit/96kHz remaster brings fresh clarity to one of Parlan’s most spirited SteepleChase sessions, revealing the nuance and energy of a group of masters enjoying every moment together.
“...it’s another fine addition to Parlan’s discography.” (Jazz Journal)

Four CD box set of jazz legend Eddie Harris, that includes the albums 'Is It In', 'I Need Some Money', 'Bad Luck Is All I Have', 'That Is Why You're Overweight' and 'How Can You Live Like That?'. Harris pioneered electronic wind instruments, like the self-designed "reed trumpet", played using a saxophone reed, and the "saxabone," a combination of the sax and trombone. In addition to saxophone Harris played keyboards and sang - he had been contributing vocals to his albums since 1972 where he produced vocal sounds using an electric device attached to his horn. Two fantastic bonus tracks are included on this compilation 'Compared To What' & 'Shorty Rides Again' which come from earlier junctures in Harris' Atlantic Records spell, both collaborations are with the late Kentucky singer and pianist, Les McCann. Their Joel Dorn- produced album 'Swiss Movement' spawned a million-selling single, 'Compared To What' whose crackling kinetic energy lit up the US R&B chart: it reached No. 35 and also hit No. 85 on The Hot 100. After that success, Harris and McCann joined forces again in 1971 for their only studio collaboration, 'Second Movement', which included 'Shorty Rides Again' a funk juggernaut later sampled and recycled into fresh new music by hip-hoppers Eric B & Rakim and Erick Sermon. Some of the key tracks on this box set are 'Is It In', 'Space Commercial', 'It's All Right Now', 'Get On Down', 'I Need Some Money' and 'That Is Why You're Overweight' to name but a few. The package includes fabulous sleeve notes by Charles Waring.

Our arrangements are always totally Anna & Oli! We really enjoyed recording these CDs, we had a lot of fun, and it was something that we were really looking forward to doing; being able to recreate our music and capture everything and present it on a silver disc. But if the truth be told, we both prefer to play live because it gives us the opportunity to convey something more personal to the audience. If we can touch even just one person in the audience emotionally with our music, then that's the be-all and end-all of what we do - the Alpha and Omega, or perhaps, just simply, the 'Anna and Oli', so to speak (both laugh). But although this may sound a bit strange, on a couple of occasions we've actually been able to directly affect the lives of people who've heard us play. Just recently, we performed a short concert in a small church when a few people from the audience came up to us and said, Wow, you're doing something that I've always wanted to do. The experience of listening to you has energised me into finally realising that what you're doing is exactly what I want to do myself. Listening to you play has changed my life!" These were young people who had been too apprehensive about following their own desires, because sometimes it's really difficult to strike out on your own and follow your own beliefs. And, to be honest, what more could one ask for? If only one could reach more people in the world, the world would be a very different place indeed.

Eddie Harris was an American jazz musician, best known for playing tenor saxophone and for introducing the electrically amplified saxophone. The 1983 People Get Funny... recording contains the title track 'People Get Funny When They Get a Little Money' and 'La Carnival', which are sublime examples of his jazz-funk style accompanied by vocals and scatting. Vinyl LP pressing. This musician is simultaneously world-famous and unknown. The label Atlantic periodically re-released the recording of a very special concert he took part in and everybody who is somehow interested in jazz, even if only on it's fringes, most probably has listened to at least one of the numbers performed by the saxophonist Eddie Harris. On 21 June 1969, he met with singer and pianist Les McCann on stage of the old casino of Montreux to unleash what can only be described as a firework of music, hardly ever experienced by the jazz community before. Situated somewhere between jazz, funk and soul, McCann and Eddie Harris actually create (this is no exaggeration!) something like a new style; and Compared to what, Les McCann´s spectacular song oscillating between black consciousness and the civil rights rhetoric, became the hymn of this movement.

An innovative tenor saxophonist and composer who was also proficient on the electric piano and organ, Chicago based musician Eddie Harris was best known for introducing the electrically amplified saxophone and for his composition "Freedom Jazz Dance," recorded and popularized by Miles Davis in 1966. In 1961, his own jazz arrangement of Ernest Gold's theme from the movie Exodus became the first jazz record ever to be certified gold. One of the first musicians to successfully blend funk and jazz, Harris' 1967 album, "The Electrifying Eddie Harris," reached the number 2 spot on the R&B charts. Presented here is Eddie's vintage 1970 album "Smokin,'" a classic collection of mostly original compositions that once again blurred the lines between funk and jazz. All selections have been newly remastered.
