Why did Socrates, on the eve of his death, decide to start playing music? Why is beautiful music often sad? Why is this sadness also a consolation? Why do we always hope that music is able to make us better if we listen to it? And above all, why does music have so much power over us, why is it able to upset us from top to bottom while, literally, it means nothing and has nothing to say? Based on the analysis of Jankelevitch, Hegel and Alain, we will try to answer these questions, and put words to the elementary and mysterious power of music. Vingt ans apr�s, or Twenty Years After, is a novel by Alexandre Dumas. A book of The d'Artagnan Romances, it is a sequel to The Three Musketeers and precedes The Vicomte de Bragelonne. The story follows a series of events in France during the childhood reign of Louis XIV, and in England near the end of the English Civil War, leading up to the victory of Oliver Cromwell and the execution of King Charles I. Through the words of the main characters, Dumas eventually sides with the monarchy, or at least the text praises the idea of benevolent royalty.
