For his first solo recording, Adrien Brogna highlights- on two albums- two highly contrasting musical periods. He recorded the album Romantic on an eight-string guitar (Replica Stauffer) by Bernhard Kresse, and the Modern album on an eight-string guitar by Peter Barton. Born in 1985, Adrien Brogna is one of the most talented Belgian guitarists of his generation. Diligent and enthusiastic, he started learning the guitar with Yves Carlin then proceeded to study at the Royal Conservatory of Mons, where he graduated with Great Distinction. Noted for the sensitivity of his playing and his rhythmic fire, Brogna is a multifaceted guitarist who now divides his time between a solo career, chamber music activities, and teaching. Since 2015, he has been a professor at the Royal Conservatory of Liege.

This new release brings together a few privileged moments of music taken from albums that were recorded between 2003 and 2015. At the heart of this album, surrounded by friends- all admirers of his numerous talents- the inestimable Roland Dyens plays one of his famulous arrangements- ‘All of Me.’ Several other notable guitar soloists are featured in this potpourri of beautiful guitar music, including Zoran Dukic, Sergio Assad, and Eduardo Isaac. Also included are several rarely performed pieces by guitar ensembles in various formations, including the Duo Siqueira Lima, Sergio & Odair Assad, and the Alki Guitar Trio, who have been pioneers in the field of guitar trio, frequently arranging well-known solo works by composers like Isaac Albeniz and Heitor Villa-Lobos to suit their instrumentation.

For several obvious reasons such as its tuning, its ambitus, its special playing but also its particular character, the guitar didn’t capture the hearts of Telemann, Bach, Handel or Scarlatti, even if the later most likely approached it or played it in Italy or in Spain during his life. Constantly evolving, the guitar, in the twenty-first century, possesses now all the needed tools to conquer the baroque repertoire. Beside a larger ambitus and strong technical means, the modern guitar offers this music new colors and other articulations. It brings also to its expression a very personal energy and the inimitable charm of a plucked instrument.

In Corpus, Magali, Hughes and Adrien present their arrangements of compositions by Granados, Albeniz, de Falla and Turina. The link between the guitar and the country of Spain is so intense that the adaptation of these works originally conceived for piano or for orchestra finds in their version for three guitars an amazing character of authenticity. Spain appears in its diversity and in its splendor all over the nin compositions of Corpus. It is a farruca, a jota and a zortziko transformed into three Danzas fantasticas for piano under Turina’s pen, it is the bullfighter’s prayer of the same Turina, it is the impressive narration that Albeniz gives of a religious procession in Sevilla… Let’s take this opportunity to highlight the decisive action of composer and musicologist Felipe Pedrell in the growing awareness of a musical heritage that these four composers would explore with fervor.
