Archive release. Recorded at the San Jacinto Hall, New Orleans, on Sept. 9, 1954. The names of Peter Bocage and Emil Barnes are not as well-known as those of others who figured more prominently in the New Orleans jazz revival of the '40s through the '60s. Theirs was a different kind of jazz, one which was driving, which was "hot, " while Bocage, especially, and Barnes opted for a more restrained-but no less passionate-approach. This CD presents over an hour of laid back, happy music that will not deafen the listener. It might encourage one to rise up and take a turn or two around the floor, as we can hear the folks doing in the background of this CD. While this is not the first time the contents of the CD have been issued, there having been a previous issue on American Music, this one has the benefit of the session's tracks being remastered. The result is a very entertaining album, and I would join with executive producer Lars Edegran when he says, "It is one of our favorite sessions from that period."

This long awaited CD presents over a dozen previously unissued masters of surprisingly high quality from the premier artist on the American Music label, Bunk Johnson. Digital technology made it possible to remove the reasons - often not musical - that they were not issued at the time, seventy years ago. The venues for the recording sessions varied between the legendary 1944 sound of the San Jacinto Hall to the homes of Bertha Gonsoulin in San Francisco and George Lewis in New Orleans. The 16 page booklet includes rare images, a history of the San Jacinto Club and a detailed discography.

Pianist Don Friedman (1935-2016) was picked by Down Beat in the 1960s as a Talent Deserving Wider Recognition and he gathered a handful of their five-star reviews during that period. He had a fulfilling career, working regularly until shortly before his death. His discography includes a blinding number of recordings, but he was never as widely respected as he should have been. The session at hand (recorded 9/12/78 in New York) is a beautiful trio session and the tune selection is outstanding - classics like Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Fine and Dandy, and Easy Living. Friedman has beautiful command of the keyboard, and enough imagination to wring the maximum effect from each performance.

No one sounded quite like Raymond Burke. He's clearly heard all of the great clarinetists from Leon Roppolo on down, and absorbed a bit from each of them. He had a beautiful dark tone that was pure New Orleans. This album was produced by Joe Mares, one of the legends in New Orleans music. He built a small recording studio in his shop and entertained his jazz friends when the day's work was done. He produced records for national companies, then started the Southland label; he ran it for thirty years and produced 41 albums before he sold the label to George Buck of GHB/Jazzology. This session includes ten unissued tracks from Southland sessions from 1960 and 1958 - two were recorded for broadcast at Dan's Pier 500, a popular Bourbon Street club best known as one of Al Hirt's first gigs, and one recorded in the famous French Quarter studio run by Cosimo Matassa, who was best known for recording most of the great sides by Fats Domino.

CD reissue. Johnny Guarnieri Plays Harry Warren is a single CD that has been reissued as a companion to the wonderful Guarnieri biography, Superstride by Derek Coller (Jazzology Press). The 1973 recording, which was only the pianist's second recording as a leader since 1958, started a bit of a renaissance for Guarnieri.

Sir Charles Thompson is one of the longest active jazz musicians - he was touring in territory bands in the 30s, play ing with the founding fathers of bebop in the 1940s, starring on 52nd Street in the 1950s and was highlighting the Japanese jazz scene when these sides were recorded. Yoshio Toyama led a New Orleans style band for many years along with his wife Keiko. They met Thompson and arranged a session to pay tribute to thewonderful sides Sir Charles recorded for Vanguard in the 1950s some of the most revered small group sides ever recorded.
