The Deep River Boys sang in a wide variety of music styles, including pop, rhythm & blues, show tunes, jazz, blues and rock & roll. Yet if there's one thing the Deep River Boys are remembered for, it's their respect for their musical roots. Like other groups that formed in Black colleges during the 1930s. The Deeps began by singing old African American spirituals. Most genres of American music, including jazz, blues, rhythm & blues and rock & roll trace their roots to spirituals, sung first by slaves in the cotton fields of the American South. Throughout their career, the Deep River Boys continued to preserve the legacy of spirituals in their authentic form and dialect, resisting the temptation to modernize them. The songs on this CD were recorded by the Deep River Boys for the Lang-Worth radio transcription company in the 1940s.

The first general-purpose collection from Marty Haugen in years, Gift of God is top-notch, offering a wealth of hymns and songs for all Christians. The title song, extremely well received since its release in 2000, incorporates a simple repetitive response, making it an ideal piece for assembly participation at Christmastime. Introduced in Marty's musical The Feast of Life,"Where Your Treasure Is" is included here in a beautiful arrangement for choirs and is now available in an octavo. Gift of God also features a wonderful communion song, "Bread of Life from Heaven," set to a traditional Argentine melody. This recording by the Taize Community offers all the songs found on Laudate Omnes Gentes, but in instrumental versions only. Taize: Instrumental was created to support small groups who wish to pray in song, but are uncomfortable singing a cappella or do not have the resources for live instrumental accompaniment. It contains instrumental support for 19 songs that are straightforward to sing and do not require solo verses. The guitar accompanies throughout, with a flute playing the melody, sometimes joined by the oboe or clarinet. Ideal for small prayer groups!

Those familiar with the music of John Bell know of his insightful and thought-provoking texts. Here, John provides us with a fresh look into the very familiar seasons of Advent and Christmas, and through song tells of the Savior's coming to the poor, to the downtrodden and to the older folk. Focusing on the lives of saints and other holy people, Journey of the Sacred is a series of books and music created to guide members of small faith communities on their own sacred journeys. Unlike many other guides of this kind, Journey of the Sacred incorporates music into each session with a pre-recorded CD for singing along to chosen hymns and songs. Each journey offers six sessions consisting of prayer, Scripture, writings by the particular saint or holy person, reflection, silence, sharing, and an experience by a modern-day person that ties into the session's theme. Each session also allows for a "going forth in actionÓ for the group or individual. One book is needed for each member of the small faith community. One CD is needed for the entire group. Although created for small group sessions, this series also may be used for individual meditation. Journeys may be used in any order.

The latest recording in the African American Church Music Series, The Lord Is My Light, is simply bursting with a wonderful array of music: anthems with organ and trumpets; a hymn arrangement; gospel selections in contemporary and traditional styles; and lesser-known a cappella spirituals by composers/arrangers Clayton White, Uzee Brown, Jr., and the pioneer of the concert Negro spiritual, Harry T. Marty Haugen has joined with composer colleagues Fr. Michael Joncas and Tony Alonso to produce a new collection of 13 songs for worship. The music reflects a wide diversity of musical forms and styles, from the classical “Lauda Sion” (Joncas) to the beautiful “In the Arms of God” (Alonso) to the call-and-response “God Is Still Speaking” (Haugen). Psalm settings, communion songs, and songs for specific feasts (e.g., Ash Wednesday, Easter Vigil) with texts by Susan Briehl, Mary Louise Bringle, Delores Dufner OSB, John Fennelly, Alan Hommerding, and James Quinn SJ ensure that there is music here to enhance any community repertoire.

Sing for Peace is Marty Haugen’s first collection of liturgical music (apart from mass settings and The Lyric Psalter) in seven years. Sing for Peace is a wide-ranging and eclectic collection, including two settings of texts by Adam M. L. Tice, a setting of a text by Shirley Erena Murray, and a number of original texts and Scripture adaptations. Like much of Marty’s previous music the texts largely focus on Christian peace-making and issues of social justice, including hunger, immigration, and earth-keeping. There is music for baptism, for intercessory prayer, choral music and two children’s choir pieces. The styles range from classical to gospel to pop, with singers of all ages involved.

Prayer and praise hymns have become an integral part of the sacred hymnody of the African American religious experience. Twenty years after the Emancipation, the children of the slaves found themselves living in the reality of separateness, and their religious practice turned increasingly inward. A unique body of hymnody grew out of that period, approximately 1885–1925. These are songs of Southern origin, of a rural people working the land. These songs are different from spirituals and Black meter music, yet show their influences. These songs are Bible-based, highly repetitive in accord with the nature of oral tradition, and of anonymous authorship.
