A resurgence of interest in Choral Evensong is being experienced in England and throughout the Anglican Communion. This musical liturgy was first formulated for the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, using elements of the monastic services of Vespers and Compline. The Choir of the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas sings this service using the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, a rarity in the United States. Included in this recording is Herbert Howells' last set of Evensong canticles (Magnificat, Nunc dimittis), which were commissioned by Larry Palmer for this choir. Scott Dettra, former organist of the Washington National Cathedral, is a brilliant choral director whose choirs have been featured on national radio broadcasts in the United States and the United Kingdom. He has prepared choirs for the National Symphony Orchestra, The Juilliard Orchestra, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet, among others.

Andrew Rindfleisch (b. 1963) is a pianist, conductor, vocalist, record producer, radio show host, and composer. He is known for his extraordinarily large catalog of choral music, some of which is featured on this release. The San Antonio Chamber Choir is the ensemble performing Rindfleisch’s works for this recording. Under the direction of Scott MacPherson, the group provides a world-class experience of a myriad of different styles, from Renaissance to contemporary. “A refreshingly wide range of both style and subject, often juxtaposing expressive dissonances with archaid imitative textures, but equally open to rich chordal writing.” (Fanfare)

James Kallembach's newly commissioned cantata pays symbolic homage to seven aspects of the crucified body of Jesus. Kallembach combines Buxtehude's 17th-century Membra Jesu nostri with visions from Milton's epic masterpiece Paradise Lost to create a unique musical expression of the Passion. The work was commissioned by Music at Marsh Chapel specifically for use in Marsh Chapel’s Good Friday liturgy. It was premiered on Good Friday, March 25, 2016 with Scott Allen Jarrett conducting the Marsh Chapel Choir and Collegium. It is scored for string orchestra, chorus, and soloists. A second performance (from which this recording is taken) occurred on October 22, 2016. Recipient of awards from American Composer’s Forum, Pacific Chorale, and ASCAP, composer James Kallembach’s choral works are performed throughout the United States and Europe. “regarded as one of the most creative and innovative modern composers.” (ArkivMusic) “interpretation [and creation] of new music is rich and polished.” (Chicago Classical Review)

Choral Arts newest release features the music of Eric Barnum. In "Life Stories" the composer sets poetry about love in different times and situations in life. Mr. Barnum is Director of Choral Music at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. He holds a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington, an advanced degree in conducting from Minnesota State University as well as BA degrees in Composition and Vocal Performance from Bemidji State University (MN). Barnum’s choral music has become particularly popular with high school choirs, with many of them commissioning new works from him. Robert Sparks assembled Choral Arts from Seattle’s best singers for a choral concert directed by famed Swedish conductor Erik Erikson. Following the concert, the group decided to continue under Sparks’ leadership, quickly becoming Seattle’s premiere choral ensemble. In 2007, Robert Bode became AD, and in 2010 Bode and Choral Arts won the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America. Also in 2010, Choral Arts’ Gothic CD, “Mornings Like This” won the American Prize for choral recorded music. In 2013, “Shall We Gather at the River” placed second in the America Prize. They have again been nominated for the American Prize in 2014.

Communicating an essential and universal message of the transforming power of grace and love this recording includes arrange of 20th and 21st century sacred and secular compositions. This recording is the first such project produced by the University of Georgia’s premiere choral ensemble, the international award-winning UGA Hodgson Singers. In 2014 the ensemble was the Grand Prix winner at the International Choral Competition Ave Verum in Baden, Austria, where it also won prizes for outstanding interpretation. Dr. Daniel Bara is the Professor of Music at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia (Athens) overseeing seven university choral ensembles and the graduate choral conducting program. The international award-winning UGA Hodgson Singers was formed by E. Pierce Arant Jr. in the late 1970s as the UGA Concert Choir, and serves as the premiere ambassadorial choral ensemble of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia. Comprising UGA’s most gifted and talented vocalists, membership in the Hodgson Singers is contingent upon absolute excellence in musicianship, vocal artistry, and dedication. The ensemble provides vibrant, pre-professional ensemble training for the next generation of singers, choral music educators, and talented choral enthusiasts and performs noteworthy choral repertoire from throughout the Western Music canon, with emphasis on unaccompanied works, recently composed works and baroque and classical masterworks.

In our time, there has been no greater advocate for singing music than Alice Parker. Recipient of six honorary doctorates and the Smith College Medal, Parker has widely influenced choral music in America as a composer, conductor and teacher. She began composing early, and wrote her first orchestral score while still in high school. After graduating from Smith College with a major in music performance and composition, she completed a master’s degree from The Juilliard School where she studied choral conducting with Robert Shaw. Her arrangements of folksongs, hymns and spirituals with Robert Shaw form an enduring repertoire for choruses all around the world. She continues composing in many forms, from operas to cantatas, sacred anthems to secular dances, song cycles to string quartets. She has been commissioned by such groups as the Vancouver Chamber Chorus, the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Chanticleer. Parker has published books on melodic styles, choral improvisation and ‘Good Singing in Church.’ Her detailed analysis, The Anatomy of Melody, was released in 2006. In 2010, as a part of the Melodious Accord 25th anniversary celebration, The Melodious Accord Hymnal was introduced. She has been recognized by Chorus America, the American Guild of Organists, the American Choral Director’s Association, The Hymn Society and Choral Arts New England for her lifetime contributions to choral music.

In this new major work John Muchleisen explores the costs of war from the point of view of the families left behind- specifically the loss of Rudyard and Carrie Kipling's son John during World War I. Robert Bode directs Choral Arts Northwest in a live performance of this moving new work. John Muchleisen's compositions have been performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. More than 40 of his works have been recorded commercially. Awards include third place in the 2013 American Prize in Professional Choral Composition and the 2014 Dale Warland Singers Comission Award co-sponsored by Chorus America and the American Composers Forum. Choral Arts Northwest, under the direction of Dr. Robert Bode, has won the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence and the American Prize for choral performance. The group has also been awarded coveted performing opportunities at the ACDA National and Regional Conferences, and the Chorus America National Conference.
