This classic album originally released on the Famous Door label was vibraphonist Red Norvo's first date as a leader in five years (since an Affinity session with the Newport All-Stars). Although largely neglected in the 1960s, Norvo was still in prime form as he shows on such numbers as "The One I Love," "Tea for Two," and "Runnin' Wild." He is heard either with a quartet, also including pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Jo Jones, or a quintet with pianist Jimmie Rowles, bassist Gene Cherico, drummer Donald Bailey, and guitarist Lloyd Ellis. It's high quality swing from one of the great vibraphonists.

Pianist Don Friedman (1935-2016) was picked by Down Beat in the 1960s as a Talent Deserving Wider Recognition and he gathered a handful of their five-star reviews during that period. He had a fulfilling career, working regularly until shortly before his death. His discography includes a blinding number of recordings, but he was never as widely respected as he should have been. The session at hand (recorded 9/12/78 in New York) is a beautiful trio session and the tune selection is outstanding - classics like Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Fine and Dandy, and Easy Living. Friedman has beautiful command of the keyboard, and enough imagination to wring the maximum effect from each performance.

Ashby appeared on the scene as if by magic when Jimmy Hamilton retired from the Ellington Orchestra in 1968 - he was in his 40s and had been around for years but much of his early discography was with rhythm-and-blues bands. He went on his own after Duke's death and made European tours with all-star packages. This was his first session as leader for a US-based label, and he takes good advantage of the opportunity.
