The Original DEBUT Recordings 1964 & 1967The legendary recordings by the TCJQ for the Danish DEBUT label have been out of print for more than a couple of decades. This double CD-set including the two original LP releases is not only the historical document but also recaptures the excitement that Scandinavia faced in the early 60s by the new wave jazz, which is still strikingly fresh today.

Long considered as one of the Big Apple's most in demand sidemen, in recent years alto-tenor saxophonist Dick Oatts has stepped out as a leader. In this his fifth effort as a leader for SteepleChase seven out of the eight tunes are originals.
The band is anchored by his long time rhythm section of Dave Santoro on bass and James Oblon on drums.
On three of these tunes he is joined by SteepleChase stalwart pianist Harold Danko whom he first met and played with in the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra in the late seventies.
Ken Dryden of the AMG All Music Guide describes Oatts as having a "fat confident tone." Indeed this is a saxophonist extrordinaire whose instrumental prowess is matched only by his compositional abilities.

“A keen technician” who loves “to vary the pace on all of his own albums” (The Penguin Guide to Jazz On CD), Vic Juris chose here on this his latest recording for SteepleChase the spare and challenging trio format. Together with his long time friends and partners bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Jeff Hirshfield, Juris found a new artistic horizon. “The outcome is arguably Vic’s most powerful and compelling series of jazz statements, summing up his 35 years’ involvement with the guitar.” (Mark Gardner -linernotes

“…Dave Ballou, Greg Gisbert and Scott Wendholt pooled their considerable instrumental resources to fashion the fifth session in the SteepleChase landmark series documenting where contemporary jazz and some of its most distinctive voices are at these days. The contents of this CD, its predecessors and the sets to come suggest, most emphatically, that the music and its proponents are in fine shape and good heart…”. (Mark Gardner)
On previous SteepleChase Jam Session series, CD Review’s Rick Finlay wrote: “…SteepleChase’s series of jam sessions drawing together the cream of the contemporary jazz world makes a refreshing change these days .…. highly recommended.”

For his 5th leader album Tom Guarna selects his favourite titles from the bop repertoire. Backed by pianist Peter Zak, who is well versed in bop, and Zak's regular trio: bassist Paul Gill and drummer Willie Jones, Guarna achieves brilliant results with authenticity and creativity.
“… Peter (Zak) shares with Tom a love and familiarity with the bop repertoire and has great admiration for such players from the genre as George Wallington, Bud Powell and Elmo Hope. Not forgetting hornmen like Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. All those men were products of the well-spring of music that signalled an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, surge towards a fresh course.” (Mark Gardner from the linernotes)
