For over three decades, Garson was associated with rock legend David Bowie as his keyboardist and creative collaborator. He also worked with Free Flight, Stan Getz, Mel Tormé, Thad Jones, and others. The computer graphics used on the cover and in the booklet are more examples of Garson s creativity. A European tour with Miriam Makeba in 1970 had brought Parlan to Copenhagen, where four off-days gave him time to look around the city. He liked what he saw and two years later he settled down in Copenhagen. Horace Parlan enjoys playing solo piano – but haven’t had the chance to do it all that often. Parlan’s aim in making this CD was to give highly personal interpretations of compositions which he has cherished over the years but which have not been over-recorded. He says: "I am not a Tatum – I have to make the material fit my particular style and I spent quite a bit of time working on the arrangement. I wanted to do a reflective CD – no racehorse tempos, no pyrotechnics – and also make the harmonic structures as interesting as possible."
Duke Ellington gained fame all over America by performing live on the radio from the Cotton Club, Harlem's elite nightclub in the 1930s. Bandmates include Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Juan Tizol and Ivie Anderson. These are some of those radio recordings from 1937 to 1939.

Yuko Mabuchi Trio thrills audiences with every concert. Her January performance opening for Branford Marsalis in the 1,800 seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall whet international jazz appetites. She next headlined the Arlington Jazz Festival in Texas, and Yuko Mabuchi Trio performed in Blues Alley in April as part of the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D. C. European and Asian stages beckon. Yuko s debut recording on Yarlung, "Yuko Mabuchi Trio," was a top seller in the Yarlung catalog last year, in all formats. Yuko deserves this success. Chicago’s grand tenor man Earle Lavon "Von" Freeman Sr. (October 3, 1923 – August 11, 2012) was a revered and most loved elder of the jazz scene in the Windy City. Duke Jordan (1920 – 2006) was approached in NY by Marcel Romano, musical consultant of the French film Les Liaisons Dangereuse directed by Roger Vadim in 1959 to audition for the soundtracks. It laid down the groundwork for Jordan’s rise to the star composer status. All too famous “No Problem” is not included in this sketching but a few of the tunes we come to appreciate later are here in their prototypes. This recording made in a NY studio has never been heard (except maybe by Vadim). SteepleChase is proud to announce the world premier release of the album of cultural/historical significance.

Willis’s career began with a voice solo in Aaron Copland’s The Second Hurricane under Leonard Bernstein, but jazz soon claimed him. By 19, he was playing with Jackie McLean and Hugh Masekela, and later with Stan Getz, Cannonball Adderley, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. His style—rooted in Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and Herbie Hancock—melds cerebral modernism with soulful hard bop.
The album features a mix of standards and originals, including the swinging title track, the introspective “Soul Search,” and the Monk-inspired “T’s Bag Blues.” His Latin-tinged “Te Quiero Mi Hermano” and homage to Herbie Hancock on “One Finger Snap” reveal a pianist deeply attuned to rhythm and tradition.

This album is all about Tadd Dameron (1917 - 65), one of the most important American jazz composer/musicians. The master baritone saxophonist and perennial pole winner Gary Smulyan conceived the brilliant idea of recording Dameron compositions with lyrics. Shirley Horn (1934-2005), long connected to Lewis's music, brings deeply personal readings of 'He's Gone Again,' 'Old Country,' and 'Roaming Lover,' before unfolding the dramatic, story-like suite The Garden of the Blues, quoting Lewis's own linking prose.
