2021 live release. Christian McBride returns with his Inside Straight quintet for a new recording called Live at the Village Vanguard. This is the third album for Inside Straight, but it's only their first live record - even though the band was originally formed purely for a live setting. Live at the Village Vanguard is effectively a companion to the Christian McBride Trio's recording of the same name from 2015. The sessions for both ensembles were captured consecutively during the bassist's two-week engagement at the esteemed jazz club in New York in December of 2014. McBride first formed Inside Straight back in 2007 when he recruited drummer Carl Allen, saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Eric Reed (later replaced by Peter Martin) and vibraphonist Warren Wolf. They were supposed to just play for one week at the Village Vanguard, but their residency was so successful that A&R executive Bruce Lundvall signed McBride to a record deal with Mack Avenue.

Pat explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing platform to host a rotating cast of the newer generations of musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way. From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians hiring me, which gave me a chance to develop through the prism of their experiences and the particular demands of what their music implied.” Metheny has given this band concept the name Side-Eye and hopes that it might become a rotating group of musicians who could come and go in different combinations. So far, there have been four iterations, hence the V.1-IV sub-heading on the record. Whether searingly electric, powerfully intense or deeply contemplative, highly composed or totally improvised, or even with some new-fangled contraption of his own design, there is always that unmistakable Metheny sensibility at work that has stood at the forefront of jazz for what is now approaching five decades. The Side-Eye series is the latest chapter in his continually unfolding story.

The album won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance in 1983. It is well known for containing the group's signature song, the jazz fusion ballad 'Are You Going With Me?' Offramp is the first studio recording on which Metheny used a guitar synthesizer (a Roland GR-300)[4] controlled with a Roland G-303 guitar synthesizer controller Metheny first emerged on the jazz scene in the mid-1970s with a pair of solo albums. Despite the common description of Metheny's music as "fusion," it was always his intention to create improvised music that had a greater emphasis on bringing out harmony than anything common to what was called "fusion" of the time.

Live archive release. For nearly 80 years, legacy has been the spinal cord of the glorious jazz tradition - but maybe never more so to it's fans than during these challenging days of the pandemic. Unable to hear music in person, all of us have only been able to access new music through technology, resulting in many looking back upon what may have been missed. But when one can look back on something that is at the same time entirely new, that is a most special situation. And when that something new is coming from jazz immortal Oscar Peterson - even more so. And that is exactly what is in hand with A Time for Love: The Oscar Peterson Quartet - Live in Helsinki, 1987. From this perspective alone, this is a momentous album - but it is far more than that. The final gig of a long international tour that began with 4 concerts in Brazil, this date was the 14th of a European tour that took the quartet all over mainland Europe and Scandinavia. Anyone with any knowledge of jazz knows that the magic of consistent performing only makes the synergy and empathy of an ensemble - both substances this quartet has in mind-blowing quantity - better and better. That always dwarfs the fatigue factor, and sometimes results in sheer magic on a different plane. That's clearly what happened during this spectacular concert. As Kelly Peterson says: "Performing with joy and vivacity, they determined to make every concert better than the previous one. This night in Helsinki is a glorious example of that" - and a stunning addition to the continuing legacy of this beloved master of music.

An exciting concert recording featuring two of the jazz greats, Cick Corea (keys) and Lionel Hampton (vibes), recorded live at Palm Beach Casino, Cannes, France during the MIDEM Jazz Gala on January 22, 1978. Horn parts by Ron Moss (trombone) and Al Vizzutti (trumpet) were overdubbed later on at Excalibur Studios, Studio City, California. Gayle Moran features as guest vocals on 'Come Rain or Come Shine'.

While attending a show at the Village Vanguard in 2006, it occurred to Christian McBride that he hadn't played there in nearly 9 years, as he'd been touring the world over. In June of 2007, Christian returned to the Village Vanguard with a group consisting of Steve Wilson, Eric Reed, Carl Allen and a young vibraphonist whom he'd recently met, Warren Wolf. Due to prior commitments, Reed could no longer be in the group, but pianist Peter Martin joined the group immediately upon the release of Christian McBride & Inside Straight's first Mack Avenue recording, Kind of Brown, and Peter's been in the piano chair ever since. The Village Vanguard has been McBride and Inside Straight's home for one to two weeks every December. Although many iterations of his groups have played there, Inside Straight was birthed at the Village Vanguard. This particular set was recorded in December of 2014, titled Live at the Village Vanguard.

He may not have known it before, but Toronto-born, New York-based guitarist Matthew Stevens, prized for his forceful, distinctive electric sound was an ideal candidate to make an album fully devoted to solo acoustic guitar: the intimate, unadorned, straightforwardly titled 'Pittsburgh'. September 2020, Stevens was hunkering down in his wife's family's hometown of Pittsburgh, while navigating his way through the crisis. He had with him a vintage Martin 00-17, a small-body mahogany guitar. Practicing daily on the Martin, he began generating a series of short song "starts" - ideas and sketches he thought might lead somewhere. Then one rainy Pittsburgh day, Stevens' bike slid out from under him and he broke his right elbow. Rather than getting derailed musically, he became immersed in a creative process that led straight to 'Pittsburgh': a document of those short song "starts" from the notebook, now hatched as completed compositions. "Playing this music became a big part of my rehab," Stevens recalls. As the album took shape, it became clear to Stevens that he was headed in the direction of a wholly unaccompanied recital, with no overdubs or sound layering of any kind. Within the voluminous catalog that pianist Matthew Shipp has created over the last three and a half decades, his solo piano work has charted a unique and compelling pathway for the evolution of the instrument's vocabulary. On Codebreaker, that path turns yet another unexpected corner, continuing to venture further while taking a surprising turn inward. Codebreaker finds Shipp in an uncharacteristically meditative state of mind. Though the language is unmistakably his own, the usual violent attacks, dense clusters and insistent circularity are in short supply, replaced by harmonic nebulae that luxuriate in the mysterious resonances that Shipp conjures from the keyboard. As ever with the work of this consummate improviser, intention had very little to do with it.
