The great Julian "Cannonball" Adderley rose to prominence in the hard-bop era of the 50's and 60's. After a successful stint with Miles Davis' sextet, including being featured on the seminal Davis records Milestones and Kind of Blue, Adderley formed his own quintet with brother Nat on trumpet and cornet, and soon became the driving force behind the soul-jazz movement of the 1960's and 70's. The rare album presented here was recorded live in Montreal in 1975 with the legendary quintet - shortly before Adderley's untimely demise of a sudden heart attack at the age of 46 in August of that year. The lineup for the quintet here is Cannonball Adderley (tenor sax); Nat Adderley (trumpet); Michael Wollf (piano); Roy McCurdy (drums, percussion) and Walter Booker (bass). Featuring the Cannonball classics "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Country Preacher." All selections newly remastered.

During the 1960's, Shelly Manne recorded at least 9 sessions for Programs, Inc., to be used by the U.S. Navy in it's recruitment show, "The Navy Swings." These were recorded at United Recorders, in Hollywood and are all previously unreleased. This 23 selection CD contains recordings from each of the nine sessions, and is an excellent overview of the music Manne and his men performed and recorded during that decade. Most widely known as the composer of the Brazilian standard 'The Girl from Ipanema', Antonio Carlos Jobim rose to fame n the 1960s as one of the most prominent leaders in the bossa nova revolution. Here, he appears with singer Gal Costa, who accompanied Caetano Veloso at the forefront of the Tropicalismo movement. They perform such songs as 'Desafinado', 'Agua de Beber', and 'Gabriela'.

This CD contains the material Hawkins recorded for Al Benson's Parrot label in Chicago. Discographical details about these tracks remain incomplete but it seems all items were made in Aug. 1953 - despite various other recording dates found in reference-books and biographies. He was playing a residency at the "Toast of the Town" club in Aug. 1953 when Benson seized the opportunity to record for his new label. Only 4 tracks were actually issued on 45/78s - incidentally one with a romantic typo: "I'll Follow My Secret Heart" appeared as "I'll Follow My Sacred Heart!" Benson obviously tried to experiment, yet neither the vocal choir nor the organist helped Hawkins a lot. It seems that a 10" or 12" LP was originally planned but Benson never issued it.
