For the past ten years saxophonist/composer/arranger/educator Chris Byars has passionately excavated and re-examined earlier gems of music by jazz’s historical contributors such as Gigi Gryce, Lucky Thompson, Freddie Redd, Duke Jordan, among others. Since his SteepleChase debut with “Whirlwind” album (SCCD 31811) in 2016, the veteran alto saxophonist Andy Fusco has been releasing annually a new album that documents this unique artist with big, edgy and sonorous tone to command your attention. The latest release here finds him in the company of three other horns: trumpet, tenor and trombone to generate vortical energy of an almost big band. “No turmoil here, as saxophonist Andy Fusco is very much in charge – heading up the group with a confident tone and strong sense of voice – which maybe also allows a bit more openness in the other players! These 2 CDs of RCA Victor recordings from Lena's early prime are book-ended with 1941 and 1957 performances of the song that will always be hers: Stormy Weather. Trumpeter Dave Scott’s 5th SteepleChase release here finds him leading his other New York ensemble “The Dave Scott Violin Band” which features some of America’s finest instrumentalists including Sarah Bernstein on violin. Dave Scott’s compositions allow each musician to fully engage in individual expression and the band as a whole to create distinctive tapestry of interactive improvisation. New York’s mainstay saxophonist Rob Scheps makes SteepleChase debut here in a quartet format, a version of his renowned NY group The Core-tet. Oregon native Rob Scheps graduated from the New England Conservatory with honors in performance in 1986. Award winning trumpeter/composer Dave Scott started his professional career in L.A. after graduating from University of Southern California. His penchant for performing and composing for the standard/classical quintet format was obvious already from the earlier stage. The Dave Scott Quintet here is the original group consisting of some of the finest instrumentalists Dave formed when he first moved to New York in 2000. “Scott allows plenty of space throughout the set for the other band members. Yvonnick Prené has been playing harmonica professionally since he was a teenager. He studied music at legendary Sorbonne University (graduated with the master’s degree in 2011). He has also furthered his studies at City College of New York, New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and Columbia University. During the five decades of his career alto saxophonist Andy Fusco has been regarded a musicians’ musician and he has played with numerous artists and led various combination of instrumentation except an ensemble with guitarist. As some of the critics have predicted, Richmond put together another quality cello album here again. Mike Richmond the Philadelphia-born award-winning bass player with vast experience including playing with Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Horace Silver, to mention a few is also a dedicated educator receiving a Teacher of the Year Award from New York University (1994). Since Stephen Riley made his recording debut as a leader on SteepleChase with piano-less trio SCCD 31584 Inside Out (2005), this trimmed down format has stayed with Riley on many recordings including this latest album, which pays tribute to the great Sonny Rollins who first recorded this format in 1957. “The tenor saxophone trio is one of the great, if somewhat underutilized line-ups in jazz. Stephen Riley has made a study of the format and delivers a fine addition to a limited canon with Hart-beat…. BLUE MOSES was pianist Randy Weston's most popular recording, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Jazz chart in 1972. Weston is stunningly backed here by Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Grover Washington, Jr.. (tenor sax) and the arrangements of Don Sebesky. The album features four of Westons own compositions, most famously the title track "Ganawa (Blue Moses)" and "Marrakesh Blues".

Pedrito Martínez‘s album Rumba de la Isla features songs once interpreted by Camarón de la Isla, the legendary flamenco icon. The album celebrates the convergence of both the Cuban and Flamenco rumbas. The great rumbero Pedrito Martínez integrates in his own personal way, classic songs by Camarón de la Isla in a unique tribute to one of the greatest flamenco artists.
