The Vanderbilt Wind Symphony is the premiere wind-performing ensemble at Vanderbilt Univ. And includes the most outstanding woodwind, brass, harp, and percussion students in the School of Music. William F. Santelmann (1902-84), USMC (Ret.), was 21st Leader/Director of the USMB, serving from 1940-55. His musical training began at age six with his father, then-Director of the Marine Band Captain William H. Santelmann. He was accepted into the Marine Band in 1923. This new release features collaborations from students, colleagues and friends from Messiah College. The pieces chosen for this album vary from solo piano pieces to full wind ensemble performances, showcasing the grand musical talent that Messiah College has.

Samuel Hazo has composed for professional, university and public school ensembles, as well as original scores for television, radio and the stage. Many of the compositions on this release are used around the world for educational purposes and are included in the series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band.

Thomas Trachsel completed his studies as a band conductor at the College of Music in Bern with honors in 2. The musical language in his works is based on late romantic traditions, mixed with contemporary elements. His typical styles include portraying melancholic phrases and themes, large-scale suspense, formidable sound breakouts and also orchestration that is extremely demanding in nature. The title of this symphony, Apocalyptic, is used in Trachsel's eyes as - for everything that exists between heaven and earth, visible and invisible.

Jack Stamp is currently adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he teaches conducting and composition. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Stamp served as Director of Band Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for twenty-five years. In addition, he served as chairperson of the music department for six years. While at IUP, he was awarded Distinguished University Professor, the highest award granted to a faculty member by the university. Choral music at Vanderbilt University can be traced back to 1895, when teh Vanderbilt Men's Glee Club toured and gave concerts throughout the country. The Vanderbilt Chorale was formed in 212 to create a bridge between students in the Blair School of music and highly qualified non-music majors from other disciplines. This ensemble is dedicated to authentic, expressive performance of a variety of musical styles.

In the introduction to his work EMBLEMS Aaron Copland's quote captured both the spirit of his music and this vision of the recording: “An emblem stands for something ---- it is a symbol. I called the work EMBLEMS because it seemed to me to suggest musical states of being: noble and aspirational feelings, playful or spirited feelings. The exact nature of these emblematic sounds must be determined for himself by the listener.” A native of Greeley, Colorado, Lowell E. Graham is the Director of Orchestral Activities and Professor of Conducting at the University of Texas at El Paso and is the recipient of the Abraham Chavez Professorship in Music. He enjoys a distinguished career conducting ensembles in many musical medias, including the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra, the Virginia Symphony, the Spokane Symphony, and dozens more. He has held numerous conducting positions to include that of the Commander and Conductor of the United States Air Force’s premier musical organization in Washington DC.

This new release features Dr. Bradley Genevro conducting the UTEP Wind Symphony as they perform the works of twentieth century composers such as Brian Hogg, George Gershwin, Dmitry Shostakovich, Alfred Reed, David Dzubay, and more. Dr. Bradley Genevro is the Director of Bands at the University of Texas at El Paso. Prior to Dr. Genevro’s appointment at UTEP, he served on the faculties of Messiah College, Oklahoma State University and the University of North Texas. Dr. Genevro holds a DMA in Wind Conducting from the University of North Texas where he studied with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. He earned a Master of Music Performance and a BS in Music Education from Indiana State University of Pennsylvania where he studied with composer and conductor Jack Stamp. Ensembles under Dr. Genevro’s direction have performed multiple times at state and international conventions. His recordings have been reviewed in Fanfare Magazine with the following comments, among others: “A superb disc” and “a magnificent statement of the highest professionalism possible from student ensembles.”
