After falling in love with the quartets of Britten and Bartók, we developed a long-standing desire to record these masterpieces. For our debut CD Longing we chose their first quartets, as well as Webern's first string quartet work Langsamer Satz. All three remarkable works resonate with a profound and unmistakable sense of longing. We felt a sense of kinship with these composers as they, like us, were still discovering their distinct style and identity when creating these works. In Langsamer Satz, Webern beautifully showcases the height of longing for love in the romantic 19th century. Bartók continues this romantic idiom and goes on to develop the new sounds of the early 20th century, a period from which we draw so much of our own passions. Finally, Britten continues to explore the sound and identity of the 20th century in his own distinctive colour palette. These works not only keep us on the edge of our seats, but also express a beautiful longing, one which we recognize in ourselves, and one we want to share with our listeners.

Performer and scholar Vania Dal Maso has constructed an innovative programme exploring music for stringed keyboard instruments from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Based on the study and interpretation of sources, both on the instruments' construction and musical interpretation, she explores the profoundly different sounds and tone-colours of the clavichord, hammered clavicymbalum and clavicytherium. The music ranges widely in forms and genres from across Europe, including music sourced from the oldest-known manuscript for keyboard instruments - the Robertsbridge Codex (c. 1320) - to create the widest possible stylistic panorama of keyboard music of the time.

George Antheil (1900-1959) was an American avant-garde composer, pianist, and inventor known for his radical musical style and innovative spirit. Often dubbed the "Bad Boy of Music," Antheil made his mark in the early 20th century with bold compositions that challenged traditional norms, combining dissonance, mechanical rhythms, and experimental instrumentation. He was particularly fascinated with the intersection of technology and music, a theme that permeated his work-including his infamous Ballet Mécanique (1924), a piece originally scored for synchronized player pianos, airplane propellers, and sirens. Antheil's songs are lesser-known yet deeply compelling. These vocal works, written across various periods of his career, present a more intimate and lyrical side of the composer. Though far removed from the explosive energy of his orchestral and piano music, his songs retain his signature wit, rhythmic precision, and inventive harmonies. They often set texts by poets such as James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and other literary modernists, reflecting Antheil's deep engagement with contemporary intellectual circles. The songs reveal the evolution of Antheil's musical language-from the early Dadaist-influenced miniatures to more mature, expressive works marked by greater emotional depth and nuance. They bridge European modernism and American innovation, merging cabaret, classical lieder, and jazz idioms.

This album features four compositions created over the past eight years, drawn from the rich catalog of Pawel Hendrich, a composer recognized by festivals, ensembles, and musical institutions worldwide. These works demonstrate the composer's consistent development of his unique style, with a particular focus on the architecture of musical form. The title, Fractals, perfectly encapsulates the essence of their structure, highlighting the limitations of material means, yet framed within diverse time and spatial scales. This is music that is deeply contemporary in it's expression, where robotic elements-requiring near-superhuman technical skill-are intertwined with the omnipresent spirit of improvisation, a domain that can only be fully realized by the human performer. The composer leaves the decision of which element will dominate to the performers each time they take the stage. The album is a live recording of brilliant interpretations by soloists and ensembles specializing in contemporary music performance, hailing from Poland, Austria, and Switzerland. These performances, recorded during Polish contemporary music festivals, feature the composer himself creating the electronic layer, bringing the compositions to life in an electrifying and dynamic way.

The acclaimed Danish jazz trio Ginmanblachmandahl, consisting of pianist Carsten Dahl, bassist Lennart Ginman, and drummer Thomas Blachman, return with the album Play Ballads, a collection of fifteen jazz standards rendered in their signature, contemplative style on Storyville Records. The trio's deep musical rapport is immediately apparent. Each note and silence is measured with care, revealing a rare comfort and understanding cultivated over decades of collaboration. Play Ballads is distinguished by it's contemplative approach to well-known standards such as Matt Dennis' Angel Eyes, Vernon Duke's Autumn in New York, Billy Strayhorn's Take the "A" Train, Thelonious Monk's Blue Monk, and Duke Ellington's Satin Doll. Each track is performed at deliberately slow tempos, allowing the trio to explore the subtle beauty and emotional depth of each melody. Dahl's piano often leads with sensitive, improvisational statements, while Ginman's bass and Blachman's drums provide understated yet essential commentary. Highlights include a sparse and intimate Angel Eyes, the reflective melancholy of Gone with the Wind, and a subtle reinterpretation of Ellington's Things Ain't What They Used to Be. The album reveals new facets of these standards, balancing tradition with innovation and showcasing the trio's ability to make each melody their own. Their shared history stretches back to the late 1980s, encompassing projects with Page One, Thomas Agergaard, Claus Hempler, and numerous individual recordings. Separately, they have worked with American jazz luminaries including Ed Thigpen, Joe Lovano, and Eddie Gomez, and together they have explored standards and original compositions across multiple albums since 2004. Play Ballads is a testament to the trio's mastery, musical intuition, and their ability to make every note and every silence count. This album is not only a must-listen for longtime jazz aficionados but also an invitation for new audiences to experience the artistry of three of Denmark's finest jazz musicians at the height of their powers.

His First Symphony famously took Brahms twenty-one years from conception to first performance - a marker of both his own highly self-critical assessment of his output, combined with the expectation of everyone around him that his symphonic output would naturally pick up where Beethoven had left off. Astonishingly, his Second Symphony was begun in June 1877 and received it's first performance just six months later, by the Vienna Philharmonic and Hans Richter. It's cheerful nature and pastoral mood are also a stark contrast to the first symphony. Following a gap of some six years, Brahms returned to the form in 1883, and composed his third and then fourth symphonies in quick succession. Begun in 1884, the Fourth Symphony was premièred by Brahms and the Meiningen court orchestra in October 1885. The work is especially notable for it's last movement, which takes the form of a passacaglia (an extremely rare occurrence) and is the only one of Brahms's symphonies to end in a minor key.

January 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of The Elgar Society, which has, since the late 1990s, offered it's invaluable support to SOMM Recordings for new and archival releases of Elgar's works. In celebration, SOMM is releasing this month Vol. 1 of Edward Elgar from the Archives. The release offers "acoustic" recordings of Elgar's Enigma Variations conducted by the composer in 1920 and by Sir Henry Wood in 1924. Also included-abridged, in order to fit onto the original disc sides-is a 1919 recording of Elgar's Violin Sonata featuring the virtuoso, Marjorie Hayward, a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, and the Australian pianist, Una Mabel Bourne. The London String Quartet, founded in 1908, is featured in an abridged version of Elgar's String Quartet, which they recorded in 1921. Elgar's recording of the Enigma Variations, the Violin Sonata, and the String Quartet are all remastered premiere recordings. Before the microphone made it's appearance in 1926, and revolutionized the technicalities of the recording industry through "electrical" recordings, musical performances were captured by "acoustic" recordings. Jutting from the wall in front of the players was a recording horn that was wound in tape to attenuate the "tinny" sound and reduce vibration. On the other side of the wall was a diaphragm, which transmitted the vibrations captured by the horn to a stylus positioned via a gimbal mechanism over the wax disc to be cut. The recordings on this release demonstrate the skill of the forgotten engineers from that era and show how they learnt by experience. Their skill has been realized for modern ears by the musician and master recording engineer of historic reissues, Lani Spahr, whose Elgar Remastered [SOMMCD 261-4] was described as a "vivid new transfer" by Gramophone Magazine when it was named their Historical Choice for Elgar's Symphony No. 1. Elgar and Richard Strauss were the first major composers to take the recording of their music seriously, and the Enigma Variations was Elgar's most substantial piece in his ten years of making recordings. This present performance with the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra was recorded at the HMV Studio, London, in three sessions: February and November 1920 and May 1921. Four years later, Sir Henry Wood conducted the New Queen's Hall Orchestra for Columbia. These two "acoustic" recordings, which bookend the Violin Sonata and the String Quartet on this release, offer a fascinating comparison. Wood's interpretation is marginally quicker overall and, as Lani Spahr points out, "the two orchestras sound to be about the same size but the balances are different and more forward in the Wood. Recording techniques had improved greatly in the four years between the Elgar sessions and when Wood recorded his Elgar set."

First recordings of Romantic-era piano miniatures by an overlooked figure among the "New Russian School" of composers known as "The Mighty Handful." "Irretrievably forgotten," wrote musicologist Richard Taruskin of César Cui (1835-1918). Long regarded as a dilettante, Cui combined a distinguished military career-as an engineer, expert in fortifications, and Moscow professor-with prolific writing as one of Russia's most formidable music critics. He was a crucial advocate for the nationalist ideals of Glinka and Mussorgsky, even as his own music revealed a more cosmopolitan voice, steeped in the lyricism of Chopin and Schumann. In this first volume of Cui's complete piano works, pianist Marco Rapetti presents music composed between 1877 and 1888, from the Trois morceaux, Op. 8, to the Trois mouvements de valse, Op. 41. The recording includes charming sets of mazurkas and serenades, as well as two major cycles: the Suite, Op. 21-dedicated to Franz Liszt-and the Pièces caractéristiques, Op. 40, dedicated to the Count and Countess de Mercy-Argenteau, tireless champions of Cui's music in Western Europe. Rapetti, acclaimed for his rediscovery of neglected Russian piano repertoire, has previously recorded Borodin and Lyadov for Brilliant Classics. His performances, described by Fanfare magazine as showing "perfect unanimity and a verve and élan that bring out all the vividness of the orchestral works," affirm his standing as a pianist uniquely suited to illuminate Cui's lyrical, poetic world.

The Athens State Orchestra is the oldest symphony orchestra in Greece. On the occasion of Mikis Theodorakis' 100th birthday, GENUIN evokes the spirits of his homeland and of classical antiquity in three symphonic works by Greece's most famous composer-works that played an important role toward the end of his life: from the early "Sinfonietta" in a new version, through the folk-inspired "Rhapsody for Guitar and Orchestra," to the equally moving nine-part "Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra," Theodorakis's last orchestral work. The young, rising Kornilios Michailidis leads Greece's premier orchestra with verve, while the album's soloists contribute at the highest standard of playing to these remarkable recordings!

TIGER'S DEN marks the debut of Swiss composer and bandleader Jan Dintheer - a bold, intricate, and deeply personal statement that blends conceptual structure with spontaneous energy. Written entirely for his own Large Ensemble, this album unfolds as a journey through imagination, curiosity, and discovery - a sonic expedition into unexplored territory. Rooted in Dintheer's fascination with large-scale jazz composition, the music fuses rhythmic complexity and lyrical intensity. Tracks like Unvollkommenes Beryllium and Langsgeteilte Dringlichkeit draw on conceptual techniques such as "cellular composition," while pieces like Flug Frohmut or 5 vor 12 capture moments of emotional immediacy - from the thrill of skydiving to reflections on global unrest. At the heart of it all lies Tiger's Den, the title piece - a mysterious, winding journey that builds from introspective bass clarinet passages to an explosive climax, evoking the courage to step into the unknown. The album closes with Shepard's Pie, whose "Shepard rhythm" illusion gives the impression of perpetual acceleration, bringing the listener full circle in a seamless narrative arc. Dintheer's writing displays a rare equilibrium between intellect and instinct. The ensemble - a vibrant collective of 19 musicians - brings the compositions to life with warmth, detail, and vitality. The result is an album that's at once architecturally precise and deeply human.

Vienna in the second half of the 17th century, under the rule of Emperor Leopold I, was a significant center of musical life-a place where various styles and influences intersected, distinguished by it's own traditions and performance practices. The same was true for harpsichord music: composers working under the auspices of the imperial court supported and inspired each other, which resulted in a large number of surviving works preserved in libraries such as those in Leipzig, Berlin, and New York. The album includes both single-movement and multi-movement compositions that share a virtuosic character, highlighting the exceptional talent of the renowned harpsichordists of the era. Special attention should be given to the artist's own transcription of an unpublished and previously unrecorded suite by Biber, which is the result of Agata Meissner's own research work. The artist is affiliated with the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and divides her attention between performing early music and caring for historical instruments. Three of these instruments were used on this album, specifically chosen to emphasize the characteristics unique to the works of each composer. The album transports listeners to an era of fervent rhetoric and emotions, contained within the bounds of courtly elegance.

- Series of award-winning recordings by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Nicholas Collon continue with a new album of orchestral works by Richard Strauss (1864-1949). This release includes Strauss' longest and final major orchestral work, the Alpine Symphony together with Four Songs, Op. 27 sung by soprano Louise Alder, one of the most in demand singers today.

With this album, Trio Fibonacci takes us on a journey through the meditative and deeply human universe of Ludovico Einaudi, a master of contemporary minimalism. His works, built around repetitive motifs and subtle harmonic variations, open up a space for contemplation and pure emotion. Many of the pieces presented here have been specially adapted by Trio Fibonacci for duo or trio, bringing new vibrancy and emotional depth to the music while remaining true to the spirit of the composer. With a total runtime of 71 minutes, Timeless Horizons guides listeners through Einaudi's most iconic pieces, including: "I Giorni" - a poignant elegy inspired by Malian folklore "Experience" - a powerful meditation on time and memory "Nuvole Bianche" - a serene and soothing classic "Una Mattina" - made famous by The Intouchables "Petricor" - evoking the scent of the earth after rain But there is much more: 13 pieces in total. The album blends Einaudi's signature repetitive motifs and subtle harmonic shifts with the Trio's expressive and fluid playing style. These arrangements offer a rare intimacy, drawing the listener into a world of silence, longing, and awakening. Trio Fibonacci made it's debut in 1998, with the press reporting that "to hear them is to enter into the world of miracles" (Le Devoir, Montreal).

This is the third album featuring the piano works of Karol Szymanowski, performed by the outstanding interpreter of his music, Joanna Domanska. The Sonata is the first major work in the young composer's output, an exceptional piece full of contrasts. The dark, dramatic mood of the outer movements collides with the more cheerful middle sections, particularly the charming pastiche of the minuet. Preludium and Fugue are early works that already astonish with their seriousness, depth of expression, and a sophisticated use of texture and harmony. The Variations, considered one of the most difficult works in the piano repertoire, are based on a wistful theme drawn from the music of the Podhale region. This album features the first-ever recording in which the monumental, virtuosic finale is presented in it's entirety, without the shortened version suggested by the composer himself. The works on the album showcase a spectrum of emotions: lyricism, flickering mystery, subtlety, mournful gravity, triumph, and bravura. While all the pieces demonstrate a typically 19th-century virtuosic pianism, the most prominent quality is the depth of musical expression.

21st Mazurkas

This album pays homage to the concept of the Schubertiad-the intimate gatherings held during the life of the "fourth Viennese classic," where the composer himself would sit at the piano, joined by the finest musicians, to perform Schubert's chamber works in the salons of wealthy friends. Much like these legendary soirées, the album presents Schubert's most celebrated compositions from the final years of his life, brought to life by a group of exceptional young artists handpicked by Andrzej Pikul. The program features two expansive songs, enhanced by a wind instrument, which frame Schubert's iconic Sonata in A minor, written for the then-novel arpeggione, a unique instrument that, unfortunately, enjoyed a brief lifespan of less than fifty years. The album also includes Schubert's monumental Fantasy in F minor for Piano Four Hands. The centerpiece is a poignant miniature that evokes the melancholic yet beloved nature of Schubert-the composer who, despite his public charm, was often tormented by personal struggles. A unifying thread throughout the album is the piano, which, under the skilled hands of acclaimed chamber musician Andrzej Pikul, transports the listener into a world of musical camaraderie and enduring friendships.

This album features a stunning collection of works, including compositions from the past few decades that highlight the extraordinary talents of the Flaubinette Trio. One standout piece is by Roman Czura, written exclusively for the trio, with a title that directly references their name. The varied textures, intricate melodies, and sophisticated dialogues between instruments offer a platform for virtuoso performances by the Flaubinette Trio and pianist Magdalena Dus, who joins them in the final track. Passionate about chamber music, the Flaubinette Trio has earned numerous international accolades and maintains an exceptional level of musical synergy. Their longstanding collaboration is palpable, delivering an unforgettable listening experience that celebrates both technical mastery and musical intimacy.

Hans Zender's reimagining of Schubert's Winterreise transforms a familiar piano cycle into a vivid orchestral journey, blending intimacy and intensity. Tenor Allan Clayton and conductor Nicholas Collon lead Aurora Orchestra through a landscape of fractured memories, where folk-like simplicity collides with Mahlerian grandeur and Berg-like expressionism. Zender preserves Schubert's vocal line but enriches the sound world with guitar, accordion, melodicas, and striking orchestral effects that evoke storms, frozen tears, and fleeting dreams. This interpretation magnifies the cycle's raw truth about love, loss, and despair, offering audiences a deeply modern, immersive encounter with one of classical music's most haunting masterpieces

For his performance of Johannes Brahms's symphonies, Kirill Petrenko returns to their roots - and to his own: in Meiningen. Hans von Bülow was the first to perform Brahms's works there, before Fritz Steinbach succeeded him as court conductor in 1886. Thanks to Brahms's regular visits to Meiningen, Steinbach became extremely familiar with his music during his 17 years at the court - and meticulously recorded the composer's wishes as performance notes in the scores.

Head Space: Candlelight is the first EP in The King's Singers' Head Space series, aiming to connect choral music with calmness and reflection. Inspired by compline, the Catholic night service, it features plainchant, including "In manus tuas Domine" and "Salva nos Domine vigilantes," emphasizing breath-led pacing. The album also includes wordless Orlando Gibbons "Songs," contemporary pieces by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Judith Bingham, and Arvo Part, and the experimental "4'33" by John Cage, concluding with Robert Parsons' "Ave Maria" and Edvard Grieg's "Ave Maris Stella," all designed to create a contemplative atmosphere.

This album features three works by distinguished composer Alec Roth, each setting poetry on themes of nature and human reflection. A Road Less Travelled is a cantata for tenor and guitar using poems by Edward Thomas, written before his death in 1917. The Garden Path is a cycle for mezzo-soprano and string quartet setting poems by Amy Lowell, many inspired by her garden. Other Earths and Skies sets Vikram Seth's translations of LI Bai's poems for tenor and oboe. Performers include Mark Padmore, Morgan Szymanski, Martha McLorinan, the Sacconi Quartet, Hugo Hymas, and Nicholas Daniel.

Forgotten Treasures of Polish Violin Music

This album features three masterpieces by composers deeply connected to Vienna, two of whom-Haydn and Beethoven-earned the timeless title of "Viennese Classics," while Schubert, ever the bold innovator, explored new musical territories in their shadow. Created within less than fifty years, these works reveal the evolution of the piano sonata genre and the eventual rejection of it's conventional form-from Haydn's Sonata in E Major, which straddles the line between the galant style and fully developed classicism, to Schubert's avant-garde and extravagantly Romantic Fantasy in C Major, a work far ahead of it's time. Schubert's innovation would not have been possible without Beethoven's influence. Beethoven's late-period Sonata in E Major, written just two years earlier, serves as a bridge between the two, clearly paving the way toward a pre-Romantic expressive style. Mariusz Ciolko, an internationally performing artist, pedagogue, and competition juror, brings a unique interpretation to this demanding piano repertoire. He masterfully balances classical elegance with Romantic virtuosity, offering a performance that captures both the technical brilliance and emotional depth of these iconic works.
