Marina Tarasova: "I was inspired to play these works in arrangements for cello and piano! And I wanted listeners to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the cello 'singing'. Life is not meaningless if there is Bach in it ! But, organ or harpsichord pieces cannot sing like a cello. These transcriptions are extraordinarily heartfelt."

Centenaries often yield rich results in recordings... This one is music by women composers performed by the Women's Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta which includes premieres of orchestral versions of two chamber-pieces, D'un Soir Triste and D'un Matin de Printemps. I have waited many years to hear these and am overjoyed that they sound so well. Following the piano score of the first, I wonder again 'how did Lili do it?' So many subtle sophisticated ideas: how did she think of them, or know they'd work? Because she was an artist-in-sound ! (Gramophone 1993)

Christopher Ball, himself a former clarinettist (in the Halle), wrote his Clarinet Concerto for Leslie Craven... The idiom is melodic and approachable. This is all very tuneful music and resists any pull towards dissonance with complete assurance. Mr Ball, no plagiarist, traces his lineage back to Butterworth and Finzi. I am sure we will hear more: don't be surprised to hear this on Classic FM (MusicWeb)

(Chopin): "There's a wealth of character in his playing, which is deeply poetic and dignified" (BBC Music Magazine 2019 of MC 3103); (Fibich): Kvapil does sterling work championing his compatriot's music; he has chosen an engaging, varied selection. It's all beautifully played" (BBC Music Magazine 2018 of ALC 1351) (Beethoven) "Kvapil is considered the finest exponent of Czech piano music... A performer... can be unfairly 'tagged' with the erroneous reputation of not playing anything else, and Kvapil's present release of three Beethoven piano sonatas will certainly correct that idea." (International Record Review of MC 147)

There's a wealth of character in his playing, which is deeply poetic and dignified (BBC Music Magazine of MC3102 Chopin Ballades & Impromptus) "Kvapil is considered the finest exponent of Czech piano music... A performer with such a specialized repertoire can be unfairly 'tagged'... and Kvapil's release of three Beethoven piano sonatas will certainly correct that idea." (International Record Review of MC 147 Beethoven Sonatas 10, 17, 21)

Czech Grand Master Radoslav Kvapil who made his name bringing to the Western World the vast wealth of Czech piano works from Vorisek and Dussek through to Dvorak and Janacek, here presents recent studio recordings of this cornerstone of the piano repertoire. He brings a unique insight from a lifeti me of performing.

Kvapil is considered the finest exponent of Czech piano music.. a performer with such a specialized repertoire is often unfairly 'tagged' with the erroneous reputation of not playing anything else, and Kapil's present release of three Beethoven piano sonatas will certainly correct that idea.

Jennifer Stinton is fortunately well known as one of Britain's foremost flautists. These works are rarely heard (here). and she demonstrates great depth in contemporary American compositions. If you have the taste for the contemporary, as distinct from 'modern' Americans, this is the definitive selection.
