The sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as the sonatas for cello and piano by Max Reger represent lonely summit heights in their respective epochs. This justifies juxtaposing these works in an overall recording and not only encyclopedically publishing Bach or Reger lively. Recorded for this volume are the two first works of the genre by the young cellist Martin Rummel, who is now represented on Musicaphon with nine albums and who repeatedly creates "fascination with his brilliant playing" (Kronenzeitung) and "concerts of superlatives" (S�ddeutsche Zeitung). He is accompanied by Elizabeth Hopkins, who has already been rated as a "brilliant pianist" by the S�ddeutsche Zeitung.

Paul Juon was in many respects a 'traveler between the worlds.' Not only geographically and culturally between East and West but also musically between Romanticism and Modernism. Perhaps it was Claus-Christian Schuster, the first pianist of Vienna's Altenberg Trio, who most successfully characterized Juon's music, which cannot be assigned to any school or trend, when he wrote: 'The shadow of homelessness falls on his works as well as on his life: not a Swiss, not a Russian, not a German; not a Romanticist, not a modern composer, not a folklorist - but yet a bit of all of them, and beyond that, in an engaging manner, a sincere and humanly impressive personality.'

When a CD bears the title 'Fantasia' for Viol and Piano, it is perhaps surprising that no less than two of the four recorded works correspond to the clearly defined form of the sonata. However, fantasia is not the designation of a musical genre, but rather expresses a basic intellectual attitude, a program. This does not mean that it is 'program music' in the proper sense - none of the four works display clear content-related links to a given program. Yet while listening one can easily get the impression that stories are being told. Not stories with a heroine or hero, or victors and losers, but atmospheric and emotional stories. The dark, soft sound of the viol is a wonderful transport medium for this.
